Why do we care what gun retailers think about gun control exactly? I can pretty much predict they will be against anything that cuts into those vast profit margins or creates more "work" for them. The ONLY conversations about this should be with the American people and what we demand in terms of public safety.

It's time to buy stock in gun safe manufacturing. Wal-Mart just happens to have some gun safes to sell by the way. Look for this to be a requirement to own a registered gun or AR/AK type weapon. Let's see now: Burglar in house--clockwise to 16, c'clockwise to 32, clockwise to38, c'clockwise to 4, etc."hold the light still dear"

WalMart + Gun Control = Everyone loosing their mind

People are freaking out because one of the largest retailers of Guns and Ammo is being asked to be a part of the conversation?

You call people having a discussion "Everyone loosing their mind"? What are you so terribly afraid of?

I am not afraid of anything. I would challenge two very extreme sides shouting their points and refusing to compromist being considered a discussion though.

That is what a vast majority of the comments are. At least in my view.

So even Huffpo's "business" section is filled with stories about gun control? How about posting some stories of actual importance. I'd like to see stories examining why the stock market is currently at all time highs even though we are still in a recession, why financial criminals are getting away with whatever they want, and how the Federal Reserve is the biggest Ponzi scheme the world has ever seen.

Let's assume that a law is passed that requires background checks for all gun sales... How do they propose to enforce that for sales of unregistered firearms between private citizens? I can only imagine that compliance would be voluntary.

Agreed, Canada attempted a foolish long arms registeration scheme for 12 years, that cost billions to run and prior to them cancelling the program in Feb 2012, they admitted that they only had 50% compliance at best.

Joe and O just want to enforce the United Nation Small Arms Treaty.
The goal of the Small Arms treaty
1. Restrict the number guns in hands of public.
2. Restrict the Amount and type of Ammunition that the public can own.
3. Create a National/International Gun registration mandate.
4. Outlaw the exchange of guns from person to person.
5. Create laws that criminalize the posession of guns that are not Nationally/International registered.

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good." - George Washington, in a speech to Congress, January 7,1790.

Oh Lordy, if wal mart is the "huge player" in this monumental event on the horizon of what to do about the sale of guns and the ammo that feeds them, lord help us all! The past acts taken to suppress wages and the right to organize every worker has under the law along with what books and they choose to sell or not sell doesn't bode well for this meeting. It would take some kind of miracle for the suits and lawyers to acknowledge even the faintest glimmer of a connection between what is sold there and the shootings in their own parking lots and fires in sub-contracted shirt factories.

I haven't stepped foot in a Wal Mart store in over 3 years. Wish others would do the same.

People cry about the unemployment but rush to buy cheap non American goods. How hard is it to understand we cut our own throat and raise the national debt every time you make a purchase at wal mart? I said you because I never shop there.

This is all such a joke... The crazies and criminally minded do not go thru the legal channels as it is to obtain their guns... This will not change no matter how many regulations you put out there....

So if the background checks are extended to all gun sales, the criminals, who don't follow the laws already on the books, will magically decide to follow this one??

I don't recall the Aurora killers having a criminal record before they murdered all those people. It can't be true about "if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.

I think you missed the memo.

Can people that are psychologically unstable own firearms? No.
Was James Homes being seen by a Psychiatrist? Yes
Was the Shrink concerned about his mental behavior? Yes
Did the Psychiatrist inform the authorities weeks before the shooting? Yes
Did the authorities take any action? Nope.

Thus he was a unadjudicated offender. AKA outlaw.

Any conversation with Walmart will be certain to put high profit and low running costs before any conscionable act on its part. This article suggests that Walmart could be pivotal in the background check procedures and perhaps reduce the number of guns available to criminals and deter table-top deals between private individuals. In Europe, illegal gun ownership carries draconian prison time and to obtain permission to own one an almost impossible task. Despite these obstacles, criminals have no trouble obtaining guns, many semi automatic and fitted with large magazines. Shooting deaths are much lower in Europe but since the fall of the USSR, has increased along with gun violence. Bona fide sportsmen can obtain rifles and shotguns with specific conditions but handguns etc, are almost taboo. Despite good intentions and cries for gun controls criminals will get guns one way or another; it is those miscreants who inflict damage on the rights of millions of responsible gun owners in our nation. And enthusiasts will still trade them on the kitchen table no matter what.
