It is a common factory among Crusades that the most dedicated Crusaders trend to become perfect mirrors of the caricatured evils they imagine themselves to be fighting. Thus; the Prohibitionists became just such a plague on the land as the "Liquor Interests" they imagined were preying on the poor. The Drug Warriors ruin as many lives through their ham handed tactics as the evil "Cartels" of legend. PETA, through unthinking activism, is prone to causing callous harm to animals - such as the ones they have been 'forced' to kill, themselves.

Frankly the "Public Servants" in the two incidents Mr. Balko described above deserve to be painfully crippled and then denied effective painkillers but otherwise medically supported for looooooong lives. It won't happen and I don't advocate anybody trying to make it happen. But if Karma should decide to throw up all over them, I'd laugh myself ill.

Bastards.

I do not believe the government should be involved in the medical decisions of doctors and patients. I know some physicians are afraid to prescribe pain killers, but really, they are many people suffering and in this day and age, should someone suffer because a few abuse these medications.

There is no excuse to allow the government to get involved with the doctors and their patients. Yes, some may abuse medications, but for those in need, I say ease their pain. It is unacceptable to allow a person to suffer when we have the means to prevent it.

They are afraid because of new laws and regs that may have the DEA pounding on their door. It is getting rather asinine.

The DEA is out of control and I feel for those who are left suffering, in pain.

I worked in a trauma center for years. The patients would come in broken, bones, cancer, kidney stones, burns, accidents, you name it I saw it. I often went home in tears seeing how the elderly cancer patients suffered. My own mother had her leg amputated. They stopped pain medicine in a nursing home, on the 5th day.... We brought her home less than 24 hours later to control the pain. Lucky for my mom, the Doctors knew her, liked her and took care of her. We promised to take of her and she stayed with us until her death, no pain, just lots of love.

The government has made their opinion on matters like this quite clear. Better a hundred people die, rot in prison or live in pain than one person get high. That is the morality of the drug war summed up in one sentence. And until we as a nation decide that is insane, politicians will not back off from that stance.

Guess WE still have work to do, ESPECIALLY THOSE WONDERFULLY LOUD NEW YORKERS, LIKE CABBIES WITH TOOTHACHES AND NO INSURANCE TO PULL THE TOOTH, OR Train people who can't get the time off to schedule a pull for two weeks and have to go back and forth to the hospital, wait for a number of hours, just for a few more pills.

THIS GUY MAKES NO SEN$E, UNLESS HE HAS BROAD STOCKS IN FUNERALS OR TYLENOL.

Yup... as Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."
