Well, it should be true. The senate has become the most expensive geriatric ward in the world and the taxpayers should not have to pay for these very old senators to sleep and be hauled out for an occasional vote. 90 is just too old and 80 probably is too.

OK, sad but true that the chances of his dying in the last term are not insignificant.  He is going to let a Republican governor replace him in that case?

OMG, Frank...retire already! Go out with your dignity intact, not having been run out of office by a younger, more vigorous person. Put the country ahead of your ego.

Mr. Lautenberg has had a long and distinguished career serving the people of New Jersey.

Inevitably, nearly every politician stays one election to long.

No other profession in the United States would allow these people to continue to be on the payroll at this age. I started to say work at this age but really. Does anyone believe that these old farts really work? This is why most of them want to extend the age limit for social security and Medicare. Not everyone has a staff of who knows how many to do their work for them. If these people had to get down in a ditch and dig with a shovel, they would lower the retirement age to 55 or 60.

There are people who are quite capable into their 90s. There was a recent report of a currently practicing psychiatrist still seeing patients at over 100 years of age.

I don't know why you can't allow voters to decide if a candidate is too old to be a senator. If I had to choose between a 90 year old Democrat and some of these tea party extremists, I would chose the Demo every time.

Lautenberg doesn't want to look forced out, the reality is Booker will take him out in a primary if need be. No 90 year old should be serving as a senator especially with a republican governor waiting to replace him. Lets just hope Lautenberg can make it through his current term.

Anybody who has been in Congress for over 20 years is part of the problem regardless of party affiliation. Can we at least agree that those folks need to go? They're the ones who presided over and accelerated the corporate takeover of American Government.

Well, he became a cynical power seeker. That's enough for me. The name calling was a warning, not a thoughtless remark.

No to term limits; if someone is good at their job, they should be able to continue at it. What is really needed is an electorate that keeps up on the issues; then they can vote out candidates that don't vote for the things that the voter him or herself stand for. That said, cory booker is pretty awesome, at i would like to see him be the senator and have the 88 yr old retire in 2014 when he'll be 90.

Oldest senator not set to retire. Senator's age buried in the seventh paragraph. By the time I read it, I was as old as the senator. Don;t ya love digital journalism?

forget the 90 year old, get rid of Menendez
