Sonia Sotomayor said her time as a New York prosecutor caused her to realize there are people who are truly evil and that some probably can never be redeemed.

The Solomon Islands are a nation that is essentially broke. It is a nation that is poorly led, poorly constituted, poorly educated, and poorly capitalized. They basically survive off the donor aid provided by Australia, the EU, the two Chinas, and New Zealand.

It is against this backdrop that this Dolphin massacre can be seen as nothing more than an extortion attempt against an aid group, as Solomon Islanders have now come to see donor aid as a gawd-given right (how does killing Dolphins achieve any other purpose?).

Cut the aid, and let them starve. The dead Dolphins won't care...

just goes to prove that trying to bribe humans into being conservationists just ain't gonna work. Probably would have been better to spend the money on education or promoting some other way of them making a living. Surely it was fairly obvious that as soon as the money dried up they would just go back to their old ways?
06:05 PM on 01/26/2013
Killing the Dolphins was not going back to their "old ways" (they made no money off that slaughter). It was an extortion attempt.

From dolphins to a elephant tusk, some cultures are simply pathetic with their lack of understanding.

It doesn't surprise me that Japan is part of any slaughter or species degradation. Their trawlers go out and drop those 10-mile nets and nothing in it's path escapes. Generally the animals that get caught in the net drown because they're held down by the weight of it, dolphins and sharks being the most heavily depleted. It reminds me of an odd curiosity from history where a visionary named Edgar Cayce (yeah yeah, off-topic I know) spoke about the geological future of Japan and that due to it's proximity to dangerous continental shelf formations that eventually the entire country would slide into the ocean. Seriously excessive payback for destroying ocean life in a cruely arbitrary, self-serving, globally impacting manner wouldn't you say?
04:16 PM on 01/26/2013
Well said, true point. What people reading this news and your comment do not realize, is a large part of the funding for their mass scale trawler net fishing industry comes through channels associated with their auto manufacturing industry(s). Which funding goes directly from the U.S. (auto sales), as well as other Countries where their name brand vehicles are assembled and the "tax-free" dollars right off the top go to the Country of the Manufacturers Origin. As with things in the U.S. being as the cliche' stated, "under-the-table" the same in others Countries. There is always more to reality then what the people in life actually see or understand.

Ever seen those Greenpeace shows on TV where their ships chase illegal whalers (mainly chinese) and try to run them off? The whalers travel in groups now with water cannons. I think Greenpeace should respond with real cannons.

get off your soap box and why don't you yell from the roof tops that we in America should mind our own store. Groups put more effort in other countries business than we do our own. Get a grip

Well as they tell us, Japan, Europe, and North America combined are less than 20% of the world's pop. but these three consume somewhere around 80% of all global wealth. Japan may slide into the ocean, Europe we know is having difficulties, and the Repubs here are seemingly frantic anent the economy.

Time to change our lifestyles? Self-awareness is found in dolphins, they are conscious and have minds.

Don't these people give and get recipts when they exchange money ? It would be very simple to show that the money was exchanged. Then, you can chase down the money trail.

I don't think they'd care. It seems they'd want more money either way and this slaughter was nothing more than a cruel extortion attempt.

These liberal" feel gooders" need to stay out of other people's affairs.

Typical misinformed comment lumping everyone of a certain ilk together. No all Liberals are "feel gooders". This Liberal, who by the way owns firearms, and enlisted to serve in a unpopular war, believes we should let other cultures alone to do as they have throughout their history.
