It's sad. While the FBI did what it had to do we all failed this man. Remember before becomming a hostage taker this man was a Vet. We taught him to kill. Yes he was sick in the head. Most learn from childhood not to kill. To become a soldier you must learn to kill. Some can come home , some even though still alive never will come home. Look around you for that soldier that needs help. There are a lot more out there like him that might stll be saved.

Prayer did not save this boy and kill that lunatic, people did.

I for one say bravo zulu for the actions taken by the FBI.

Now, let's talk about getting guns out of the hands of lunatics like Jimmy Lee Dykes.

So great that the boy is safe and glad the animal is history. He killed an American hero and Mr. Poland can rest in peace and watch over this young man and all the other children whose lives he saved.

The time for violence prevention is here, it’s now and it will not be denied. 2nd Amendists and the NRA are on the wrong side of America.........

Yes, the prayers have been answered! I guess those praying for the gunman's life didn't get their prayers answered.

How do you know anyone was praying for the gunman's life? There were no reports of him having family or friends.

I guess all the players of the losing team from the Superbowl also had no family, friends, or fans, since they lost the game despite praying to win. And according to your logic that's what it takes to win are people uttering whispered mumblings to a fictitious invisible deity, not training or effort or random happenstance.

So god only cares if you're popular? I thought Jesus was friend to the friendless, the downtrodden, the forgotten?

funny how liberals and women insist on people saying Congressperson instead of Congressman or Spokesperson instead of Spokesman, but they have no issue with gunman..why not shooter if he's shot the weapon or kidnapper since he was holding the boy hostage..

When talking about someone indiscriminate who could be of EITHER sex, the term (blank)PERSON is perfectly acceptable.

Since we knew the kidnapper with the gun was a MAN, calling him a gunman is perfectly acceptable.

How many women do you know kidnap children from buses, shoot the driver and hole up in a bunker? When that happens, when a woman actually DOES that, then using the term gunwoman would be perfectly acceptable.

Get it yet? Probably not. Teapublicans have shown repeatedly that they are not quite bright.

I'm stunned someone took the time to explain that so well. You have more patience than I.

These people were doing what they felt was right, because they couldn't contribute any other way, because by doing so they could have made the situation worse. It's good the community came together in this situation and showed the parents of the child, and the family of the slain busdriver, support in these trying times.

I'm glad the situation is over, and I hope the boy recovers from this traumatic experience.

To the positively disgusting comments below, criticizing people for their religious beliefs, I hope you all feel quite smug right now, it should make you feel better that you can put yourself above these people morally, in the face of a tragedy. I'm also sure that you wont realize that, and will continue painting a helplessly disgusting picture of militant atheists, through your needless trolling. I mean you hit the jackpot here! I'm sure you even really offended religious people too!

I never fails to amaze me the level to which believers will go to play the victim. What selfishness and arrogance.
07:00 PM on 02/04/2013
Explain how.
I am glad the situation is over. I didn't contribute to help. Neither did you. The best people can do is be thankful it is all said and done, and the man responsible didn't harm the child, despite killing an innocent bystandard.
I'm confused how this makes me selfish.
As to arrogance, I stated disgust with people who were making light of the whole situation by declaring people who pray as a way to try and cope with the matter, as slightly more evolved than nemotoad worms. People who do that are implying their own moral superiority by saying: "We don't believe in a apathetic deity, look at us, we're better than those sheep!"
Oh, and I'm an atheist of 3 years now myself.

I need a fainting couch and some smelling salts, STAT! It's the worst case of manufactured outrage I've ever seen but I don't think it's terminal.
07:04 PM on 02/04/2013
Manufactured outrage? Truly, why shouldn't I find disgust in people who are perfectly content to criticize people because of a belief they are using to try and cope with a traumatic situation? Given another context, it wouldn't be manufactured outrage, it would be an acceptable by many people posting here. If it were directed at people they disagreed with, it'd be fine. But instead, it's fine and dandy to behave hypocritically, than to hold themselves to a higher standard than those they are stated to hate.

Prayers do not feed the poor or help the traumatized.

Prayers only help religious folks feel better about themselves.

If you send cash the family maybe able to use that to pay for his medical expenses.

Well, it appears the miraculous has occurred here: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57567546-504083/alabama-standoff-update-hostage-situation-ends-5-year-old-child-is-safe-kidnapper-dead-u.s-official-says/

Will be interesting to get the details on how they killed the kidnapper and got the boy out safely. Thank god.
