The Church of England didn't invent marriage and nobody needs its permission to be married, gay or straight. The same holds true for any other church/faith/denomination which objects to gay and lesbian marriage.

Churches WITNESSES a marriage. That can always change to a Justice of the Peace or some other official of the state or municipality. Churches which don't want to witness gay marriages won't have to, or they won't be permitted to witness ANY marriage. That's perfectly fair.

No matter what the CofE, Roman or any other church thinks or teaches is their business. Regardless of their teaching on marriage, gay and lesbian marriage will be approved by Parliament and approved in France too.

The immorality of crashing a plane full of innocent people into a building full of innocent people is obvious. Claims that this is justified by God's will deserve utter contempt. The Catholic Church's immoral teachings on human sexuality have and are producing far more evil than the destruction of 3,000 innocent lives. The Church's invocation of God's will as justification deserves the same contempt we give to the religious claims of Bin Laden. This is not to imply that the two cases are similar. Murdering people with a religious rationale is different than preaching what one honestly believes even though it has disastrous consequences. The correct response to the former is police or military action. The correct response to the latter is to try to convince those doing the damage and their supporters of the evil results of their actions.

The church recognizes the immorality in its past when it was torturing in the cruelest possible manner and burning at the stake heretics, witches and anyone else that the church, in its psychotic paranoia, saw as a threat to its authority. When it was murdering people up close and personal there was a limit to the damage it could inflict. The cruelty it inflicts today is far worse.

This article concerns an event in the Church of England, and the titular head of the Anglican Communion, not the Roman Catholic Church. And there are a great many differences between the two.

"Welby, 57, was a banker and oil executive before his ordination as a priest in 1992, and has served as a bishop for less than a year."

Obviously he wasn't corrupt enough as an oil salesman or a banker, he needed to go into the ultimate racket: religion.

He'll have plenty of company too, e.g. B16, the patriarchs of the Orthodox churches, Pat Robertson, and countless early Sunday morning snake oil salesmen pounding their plastic pulpits and suckering millions out of their hard-earned dollars out there in TV land.
