Navy personnel aboard the USS Boxer can now enjoy Starbucks coffee at "Starboxer," a fully functional new cafe that opened on Feb. 9 just off the coast of California.

Navy personel must be doing pretty good to afford $5 cups of Starbucks. Sequester away my boys....

The federal government realizes that coffee is a required staple of the American diet. Does anyone wonder how much coffee is purchased each month using SNAP?

Judgemental much? I work in a grocery store, and by and large, people who use it buy regular groceries, just like every body else. I woud rather see a can of coffee, than, a bag of potato chips, but that is just as true of those who whip out their platinum American Express. Government small enough to fit into your grocery cart. Thanks, just what we need.

javagirl023: The government is already in your grocery cart...big time...check the labels.  I don't want to pay for SNAP if it includes, chips, candy, cakes, pies, gum, soda, coffee, Starbucks bottled lattes, rib-eye steaks, sushi, etc.  These are not supplemental nutritional items!  Why not simply give those on SNAP a card to eat out at a different major restaurant each night...would you be o.k. with that?

Good for the people on the ship. If Starbucks can sustain it on a ship, great. I've seen them in college campus buildings. It's a much smaller version of the regular store.

I don't think this is a particularly good sign to see Starbucks getting a government contract like this. Coca-cola did pretty much the same thing, supplying U.S. soldiers with their product during WWII. Coca-cola also invented Fanta orange soda especially marketed for the Nazis to hide the fake all-American image of Coca-cola. Similar to the way Coca-cola makes fake "natural" products today. I don't trust multinational conventional food and beverage companies. They tend to be fascists to some extent. And history does tend to repeat itself.

"Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power" --Benito Mussolini

We're all dependent on corporations. Anyone who complains about this because it happens to be on a naval warship is a hypocrit.

Really? Come on, first Starbucks then other fast food giants will want in, then we'll have the fattest soliders on the high seas. Is this some kind of Chinese plot to make our Navy slower to response cause they're coming down off their sugar highs?

Funny how "Logistics Specialist" means working in a coffee shop. Great training for his future after the Navy.

I would imagine Starbucks would love to offer low paying jobs as long as they get the tax breaks for hiring Vets.

It's apparently a franchise store that the Navy bought, like the Starbucks that you see in grocery stores. Only the ones that have their own stores are corporately-owned stores, but inside other stores are just franchise stores, owned and operated by the store.

Since the military is at the service of the Corporations(you know spreading freedom all over the earth at the end of a gun to secure cooperation of Governments,or else) it is only right that the Corporations start giving something back(making them pay of course). Don't ya love America Inc.?

Starbucks will soon be opening outlets on Antarctica and on Mars so they can sell handcrafted, overpriced mochas and lattes to the penguins and the martians.

The cafe is run by the Navy -- all profits go to the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation fund.
