That would have been great at the "get go", now the way this bill has been bastardized to accommodate the Rethugs and "flea bags" blue dogs, it will only put more money in the Health Insurance and PhARMA thieves. Obama and the flea bags wasted a ton of time and political capital for nothing.

let's legislate a single payer

state by state,

as Canada did.

leave the red states behind,

broke and half-empty.

That would be fine, except the pool would be too small to compete with the insurance companies that have much broader reach. To be effective, the entire nation must be included in the pool.

Just make sure you take out those 100+ amendments you put in the bill in hopes of getting their support. If you are really going to do this alone... do it alone. Just Democratic input and Democratic votes !!!

There have been way too few discussions about this. I agree. What ARE those amendments anyhow? I am sure there's nothing good about them.

The only viable bipartisanship at this point is between progressives and conservadems. And I don't even know if that is possible, but I wish that is where the focus had been these past months.

The fact is, Republicans- numerically and certainly ideologically- are irrelevant. We have the big majority and have never needed them except for the c0wardly use of political cover. Voters won't punish the Dems for lack of bipartisanship, but we might be punished at the polls for inaction in the face of a mandate and a majority. Concentrate now on our own renegades and pass a bill with zero Repubs. Democrats and Independents will cheer, and even Republicans will grudgingly approve of the strength if not the policy.

I agree. Instead of worrying about getting the other party on board... the President and Congressional leaders should have spent more time getting all of the members of their own party on board. I know people like to make the Republicans the villains... but in this fight... Dems are really fighting themselves.

All of the Republicans' arguments against health reform this time are the exact same arguments they had against medicare in 1965 (government rationing, government will come between you and your doctor, socialized medicine etc) and against social security in 1932 (turn the US into a totalitarian state, big brother, it will bankrupt us etc). Not only did none of these things come to pass but now not one of them would dare vote to abolish either program. Why is this not pointed out more often? Why isn't this CONSTANTLY talked about?

Yes! We don't need the cave dwellers (republicans) to get real health reform passed. If the shoe were on the other foot, the cave dwellers wouldn't bother with the Democrats.

Bipartisanship is way over rated. Steamroll the party of no. The Grand Obstructionist Party was thrown out of office en masse and should not even be given a voice in the issues facing this country. They have already said too much and none of it makes any sense.
12:57 PM on 08/25/2009
CO-SIGN!!!!! Yeah...Let's get it started!
12:49 PM on 08/25/2009
Don't worry, in the end Obama will just pass something the Republicans want and call it good enough.

He really is a very timid and cautious reformer, and seems downright frightened of the right-wing Republicans, too. They know it, too, and they figured out fast that he could be easily pushed around, on both foreign and domestic policy.

In any case, most of what he's doing is not all that different from the Republicans, but it's in a nicer package. His "reforms" are mostly going to be giveaways to the various big business interests that fund both parties.
01:04 PM on 08/25/2009
Guess you haven't noticed that Obama has pretty much been staying out of this debate. It's Congress that's taking the lead on this one.

Wouldn't that require that there be bipartisanship to abandon?
That would be news to the GOP.
