I'd like to see more specific information as to regional trends and denominational trends. Our Catholic parish in Virginia is vibrant and growing with lots of young people and families. I often see articles about the decline in church attendance and I marvel at how our experience is so different from what is happening elsewhere. I think what we're seeing in our faith community is happening in other places, but it's very specific to each community. It probably follows broader economic trends as well where places that are growing and prospering economically are probably experiencing congregation growth across denominations. Also, I suspect that the trend of people abandoning faith altogether is going to slow and the number of believers will remain steady overtime. The era of mass abandonment of organized religion and belief began 40 or so years ago and the people who are going to leave have, for the most part, left. The people that remain will tend to be more orthodox in whatever theology they believe in and more observant in practice. People will still leave on denomination for another or abandon faith altogether, but not at the same clip as we have seen over the past few decades. It will be interesting to see this report in 10 years from now!

No, our parish and diocese is growing.  That is a fact.  So are other denominations in my area and in other parts of the country and world.  Yes, overall attendance and even belief may be in decline.  The point I make is that I predict that trend will level off.  Those that predict that the trend will continue to a zero sum where no one believes are wrong.

Mass attendance among white American Catholics is at an all-time low.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS......: 2 Chronicles 15:13 - "Whosoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman." The Bible has been used to kill many innocent people.

Yes, it says that and it is talking about the Hebrews in Jerusalem who were making a covenant among them that applied only to them.

Are you saying that the declining congregations are shrinking due to murder? I think that one's even odder than the pope resigning as a result of a conspiracy by gay illuminati.

The percentage of people that regularly attend church is dropping rapidly. This is what they really need to worry about. My grandparents were extremely religious and went every single week. My parents were kind of religious and went about once every 3 weeks when I was growing up, my brothers and I are all atheists. I would guess that the reason for the increase in education in church is due to the fact that far more people have been going to college the last couple decades.

The article said that 47% of churchgoers have a college degree, up substantially over the last decade. That repudiates the attitude of so many atheists and secular humanists that only uneducated people go to church. That 47% is way above the national average.

Yes morale is improving every day in the Walnut Tree Congregation. Recently a whole flock of doves have become regulars and there used to be only a pair.
