> The Republican-controlled Arkansas state Senate voted 31 to 4 to allow colleges and universities to decide themselves whether to allow concealed weapons on their campuses.
The idea that more loaded firearms will make society safer is clouded by emotion and unsupported by facts. There is no hiding the facts of the tragedy at Newton and gun violence across this Nation. What we do now is  Read More...

You mean you don't have to give up your constitutional rights to protect yourself on publicly funded college campuses? Why is this news? This should be the case on all public school campuses.

The NRA and pro gun lawmakers think the only "gun free zones" should be at their public events.

On campuses where lawful carry is allowed, crime hasn’t increased. In most cases it goes down. I'm not talking about arming juveniles. I am talking about faculty members, military veterans, responsible adults. They already have permits and already carry everywhere else, so why should colleges be any different?”
06:01 PM on 02/26/2013
They would not be and are not. Those of us who carry keep that very low profile. No one knows. I am sure many people are armed on campuses all over the nation. I am just as sure many who would be are not becasue they choose to follow the rules 100%.

Only about 36 % own guns. Pity that so many of you infringe on my rights.I don't own a gun and when find a person would kill themselves if they had a gun.
05:51 PM on 02/26/2013
I really dont see the problem with this. I would hope any facualty or staff who choose to carry would take the time to really seriously train for an active shooter situation. Further, the U should help offest costs of that if they so choose.

For years, colleges have cultivated a deadly illusion that a gun-free policy makes us safer. The mass shootings we’ve seen in recent years only prove killers don’t play by the rules. Logic plays no role in the gun ban proposals because it is about control, not gun control.

You forgot to add those pushing for a gun ban, I believe that should get them an exemption too.

If anyone in the South needs a gun, it would be a black person. You know, having to protect themselves from lynchings and such.

"The Republican-controlled Arkansas state Senate voted 31 to 4 on Monday to allow colleges and universities to decide themselves whether to allow concealed weapons on their campuses." Guess no one has seen the part about the University to DECIDE THEMSELVES. That doesn't mean that every single one of them will allow it to happen.

Way to go Arkansas. According to the FBI stats you are already in the top ten for U.S. States with the highest gun deaths per capita.

Link? I ask only because your assertion is nonsensical. According to the FBI statistics, homicide stood at 5.5/100,000, slightly above the national average. Conversely, IL must also be in the top 10, with 5.6/100,000 homicides. DC, by itself, suffers some 17.5/100,000 homicides. If you are including suicides, which you probably are, then please show us proof that those homicides would not have happened but for a firearm.

Huff Post won't let me put in the link. Put in Arkansas gun deaths and you will get the info.
05:26 PM on 02/26/2013
How many of those deaths were caused by people authorized to carry concealed guns by the state of Arkansas?
04:54 PM on 02/26/2013
For me this makes a lot of sense. The best person to enguage an active shooter inside a classroom or lecture hall etc is someone in there from the onset of the event. They have ALL the info..as in what the shooter looks (is dressed like) like, is using for a weapon, ie hand gun shot gun multiple guns, where the shooter is at, is there only one shooter, and they have the best chance to stop the shooter the fastest. Anyone showing up after the fact has little to none of this info...if they have anything it is coming from those fleeing the shooting...not real reliable input. Entering into the room is a challenge and you face lots of issues which slow you down and cost you time as a result. Plus when you go into the shooting from the outside, you have a much higher discrimination curve or filter, again slowing you down. ALL of that creates more stress...just a few (not all of them) tactical points to consider. So like I said, it makes sense to me for these reasons for sure.

People who truly believe in a loving GOD who loves ALL HIS children can not hurt a fly let alone hurt GOD's children. These are the ones that can be trusted for self defense and should carry concealed weapons now that immoral people have grown in shocking numbers as many have abandoned faith in GOD in favor of Evolution's godless absolute freedom, free to do anything even hurt the innocents especially when life becomes sour or when temper snaps.

Godless people are ticking time bombs because, while they can all say with comfort that they can be moral without GOD, the truth remains that,to them, there is no GOD to hurt where they can pretend to appear good but then shoot every one later on especially when life turns sour or when their temper snaps. These godless people are ticking time bombs if they carry guns, and should not be allowed to carry gun or even to own one.

Guns are niether villans or heroes they are an inanimate object which can be used or abused. It depends on the person holding it.
04:46 PM on 02/26/2013
Indeed. The best way I have eve heard it put is this: The person is the weapon and the gun is the tool.
