Agreed. Especially since the act was put into place BECAUSE several states refused to include people of color in the political process.

surprise surprise! another supreme court justice who doesn't believe that the rules on ethics and recusal apply to himself. what's especially troublesome is that he is the CHIEF justice.
he should recuse himself. he's obviously going to have a hard time listening objectively to a subject he was so involved in as a young lawyer who takes defeat poorly (in general).

the republicans on the court - and yes, they ARE republicans and partisan - have blotted any positive image that the court previously held. shame.

What's changed since the 1960s is not that Southern racism has receded--in my travels there, I've seen little evidence of this--but that a tactical racialism, one that seeks to depress likely Democratic turnout by placing barriers specifically between people of color and the voting booth, has taken hold in Republican-controlled states nationwide. What's needed is not repeal of the Voting Rights Act in the South, but its extension to all 50 states.

Funny When Roberts gave you marxist's Obamacare you all LOVED him, described him as a scholar who really knew the role of governmet regardless of the constitution and now you hate his position. Time to be quiet kids.................

@BLambda...no Roberts was doing his job and not going by party lines....just as now 7 repubs governers has agreed to expand their Medicaid. ( when during the election it was so bad) AND all the taxpayer dollars spend on repealing it. I cant wait to hear how they brainwash theire party memebers to how Obamacare is a good policy( now) for everyone.

Easy, they'll just stop calling it ObamaCare. Using ObamaCare is short-hand for 'you should be scared of this'. When people realize how it helps, the republicans will just start using 'The Affordable Care Act' and claim it was a republican who put it into law.

Anthony M. Kennedy summed up the objection in 2009 during oral argument in an earlier case, Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District v. Holder: "the Congress has made a finding that the sovereignty of Georgia is less than the sovereign dignity of Ohio. The sovereignty of Alabama, is less than the sovereign dignity of Michigan. And the governments in one are to be trusted less than the governments than the other."

The correct answers to this question are, respectively,"yes," and "what's your point?" The states and parts of states covered by ยง 5 are "trusted" less than others because Congress has repeatedly found them to be the worst offenders in the historical crime of racial vote-rigging. And neither those states--nor any other state in the Union--has any kind of "sovereign dignity" that needs the Court's protection against infringement by their own voters.

I think the fact that the Supreme Court took the case signals that they want to rule on it. From what I understand the County didn't try to "bail out" like many counties have been allowed to do. An argument could be made that they don't have standing to sue because they didn't try to use an avenue that was open to them for getting out of the VRA. The Court could have told them to go to the Justice Department and ask for a bail out. Then if it is refused, you can sue.

the VRA should cover EVERY state, given the huge voter supression we sa last Nov..even here in my NH. the TeaBorg Speaker got caught on video explaining why, REALLY , he wanted to keep college students & stationed military from voting....roll tape. rational voters threw them out of power in Nov

Racism still exists in the states that are fighting the voting rights act. They may not be as public about it but it's there, if you couldn't already tell by all the voter suppression attempts in the 2012 election. Getting rid of the voting rights act in these states will set democracy back 50 years for black voters.
09:53 AM on 02/27/2013
It will set all of us back. Progressives need people of color and women to fight back against the Grand Old White Boys Party of racism, misogyny, and wealth redistribution to the top 1%.

We need the protection of the federal government in voting rights. They either need to write a new bill, expand the original VRA or expand it. But something needs to be done.

IF voting rights is left up to the states, many citizens will end up losing their right to vote. Voter suppression comes in many forms.

It is important for the survival of our democracy that this President nominates at least two SC justices in his term.
