In another sign of how the lines between profit-making and nonprofit are blurring, Wal-Mart on Friday will appoint a former senior executive of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to head its corporate foundation.

If the government was 100th as efficient as Walmart, the recovery would be well underway.

Yup, pay min wage, no healthcare and force employees on food stamps.

It's kinda funny when you see that on average, Walmart pays more than Burger King, but you don't hear people complaining about all the burger flippers getting food stamps.....Maybe there is a little racism involved here????

I'm no fan of Walmart's practices but in all fairness, those people do not have to work there. Everyone knows how WalMart is yet there is no shortage of people applying. Just a thought.

It's not Walmart in the government. It's someone who used to be in the Clinton admin, and later worked for Walmarts Charitable Donations department, meaning she specialized in directing the money that corps give to non-profit orgs for tax write offs. Walmart doesn't have to be sincere in their interests, for this woman to have been sincere is seeing corporate spill over go to deserving organizations.

Read the article again, and see what position she had at Walmart HQ's, after being in the Clinton administration. It's not what you think.

Led their philanthropic endeavors? While a majority of their workers live in all but adject poverty? Led the effort to pave the way for GMOs in Africa? Sounds like a great resume for a government office. In the Romney administration.

I understand the alarm expressed at the very mention of Walmart. But let me just mention four things.

1) Walmart Foundation is a philanthropic organization. It's not like she was President and CEO of Walmart.
2) Before that, she was President of the BIll & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Program.
3) From 1993 to 1998, she served as Staff Director for the National Economic Council, then Chief of Staff to Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, then Deputy Chief of Staff to President Clinton where she supervised the work of the National Economic Council, the Domestic Policy Council, Council on Environmental Quality, and the White House offices of Public Liaison, Intergovernmental Affairs, Press and Communications.
4) She was a Rhodes Scholar and graduated cum laude from Harvard with a degree in Government.

So, you know - maybe cut her a break. She's qualified in plenty of different ways.

Say it ain't so! Anyone from Walmart, as far as I'm concerned, is damaged goods. Just saying!

Obama's pick of Jack Lew was foreboding enough, but now, picking Wal-Mart foundation exec Burwell to go along with that is beyond the pale. These two picks show how committed he is to Wall Street and his callous disregard for the working, middle class.

When I think about getting someone to help with the problems created by outsourcing jobs, and reducing wages and benefits for American workers, it's just a no brainer for me to think of a Wal-Mart exec. Who better than an experienced insider at WM to bring pressure for implementing that mindset to escalate the destruction by austerity to the economy?

Can we hear some soothing music while standing in the slaughterhouse line?
