It was a private institution that funded this, what do you care you didn't pay for it? People spend 300 bucks on a cell phone, shouldn't they of spent it on saving lives? Thats just not how society works on a whole. All the illnesses that are still wide spread in the US such as cancer, Alzheimers, and AIDS are incredibly hard to cure because they have to be cured at an individual molecular level. Maybe a better understanding of controlled fluid dynamics that have been manipulated at a small level like what these experimenters showed would somehow be of use in the future of medicine.

Research is not a zero sum game, and no research is ever stupid. You don't need to fund one kind of research by taking money away from some other kind.

We're doomed! Doomed, I tell you! It will be the end of all things!!! Gay marriage in Canada has shifted our country into the ninth dimension, where imps of Satan prod us with little pitchforks and ducks fly backwards.

Probably very little. If you bothered to read the article, you would have no basis for your question.

It's not a party trick. it is fundamental to an understanding of fluid physics. This will be helpful in airplanes, blood flow analysis and other areas of direct benefit to human beings.

Recognize that you are too ignorant, too limited, to really understand what this is about. It's sad that you showed that ignorance with a really thoughtless question. Now realize that not every human accomplishment is suited to your limited judgment.

I am a fan of all things science, but I do not see an application for this. Not sure what can be gained from making a looped vortex underwater? It's cool to see somthing that hasn't been done before, but other than that it's kind of useless.

Airplane design, blood flow, how chemicals mix in the body, biophysics.

The Analytic technique they used is also useful in understanding how fluids move and mix.

It's unfortunate that our education system has become so limited that people are not able to form the abstract ideas that make the connections you don't see.

It is not useless. It's important. You just don't have the science and reasoning education to get it. Take this as a challenge to learn.

How stupid can someone be? You just answered that question.

Are you so lacking in reason, in the capacity to make connections across the abstract that you made this comment? Obviously you are.

This has benefits to understanding any time a fluid flows and mixes. Cherry stems are not fluids.

From trefoil to turbulence.

Turbulence is one of the least understood areas of nature and yet it is observed in all complex real world phenomena.

Those who say this kind of thing is a waste of time and money have not understood the modern world and have not considered the gains made by studying turbulence and flow on repeatable, delicate systems. Anyone who better understands turbulence in fluids will stand to change all chemical engineering, all petroleum mining and refining, all motor vehicle design and construction...

The point of science is that we do not know ahead of time where the great insight comes from, nor where the next revolution begins. What we can say for certain is that the method always has worked in the past to produce technologies which more than repays the costs of research.

Consider Faraday's researches in electricity and magnetism, the cost was small, the gain was not obvious for a long time but ultimately it was electric motors, electric power and all electronic circuits built prior to the Josephson Junction.

Science is my religion, but you already knew that. How's it going? Glad you're making a differences too, Str33t and great comment, as always.

The astrophysicist who understands turbulence in a space-time-matter-energy-? context who could create and control a stable 'bubble' of reasonable dimensions will be the discoverer of hyperlight travel and of an infinite energy source. Only then we can transform ourselves into a type II or III civilization on the Kardashev scale.

Biomimicry is a new pursuit of mine as cloning genes out of pathogens for the guv was taken off the table 3 decades ago. As you probably know, 'Velcro' is an example of biomimicry in action. Think gecko toes.
