Really the funniest thing about this is that it's NOT what the 'noodle' is there for, it's to keep a car door from accidentally HITTING AND DENTING THE COPPER PIPE!!

Just a few good whacks over time would likely distort the pipe a great deal, and then... just...one... more... time (probably about 1:00 a.m. on a Saturday night, if the law of averages holds true) and you're going to have an absolute GUSHER when the car door breaks that puppy (looks like 1" diameter to me) wide open, flooding the garage in the time it takes Egbert (the hapless owner) to either drunkenly find the water main and shut it off...or run up the block to drunkenly and violently wake up his "kinda' neighbor/kinda' friend" DIY plumber who just, "has to know where that D__N shut-off thing-y is at ONE FREAKIN' AYE EMM in the morning"...

Well, that's my version anyway. Guess it COULD be just a paint-y, scratch-y thing, now that I think about it...

Nahhh.......it MUST BE that someone installed expensive copper pipe to hold up that "noodle" to protect the car, right??

Actually, you can see that the "noodle" isn't even in a position to protect most of the the car door at all. This is a case of someone at HP finding a picture and making up a story.

This is somewhat difficult to employ in a parking lot filled with tank-sized SUVs driven by little people who can't see over the steering wheel, brain dead mini van soccer moms and the testosterone poisoned pickemup truck drivers.

I have a two car garage that I park one car in. No problem. Now if the garage was tight and I did park two cars, how do do you glue a noodle to the center wall that doesn't exist between the two cars? The driver's door from the car parked on the right would hit the passenger side of the car on the left and... the last time I looked... most homes have two car garages. And I've never seen a chair rail along the wall like in the photo above in any of them. Must be Canadian - they do things nicer up there.

I don't think it's a chair rail - I think it's a length of copper pipe, either for plumbing or natural-gas supply. The grey thing in the background looks like a water heater.

As for the situation of a close space between cars, I'm picturing something like a tennis or volleyball net setup, but lower to the floor, with supports with weighted bases, and a padded sheet of plastic strung between. Voila.

Do you see that part of the car door that looks like a long horizontal strip?

That's the part that hits the wall first.

This car door doesn't fit the need of the "solution."

Did this years ago, but used a large size pipe insulation tube. Easier to find any time of year than a pool noodle that is only readily available in the summer months.

The split-tube foam pipe insulation is also good for weather stripping on the bottom of a garage door if you have an uneven floor. It comes with peel-off strips covering adhesive on the split surfaces - just slide it on the lower edge of the garage door, then pull the peel-off strips off and press the adhesive surfaces on to the door.

But see the trim line in the middle of the car door? That's a softer material meant to absorb the damage done, a bit of scuff on the edge indicates its done the job up to this point. Also it defends against of car doors in parking lots. I'm more interested in the insulation benefits of pool noodles around hot water lines; and as Dollar Stores abound, is it a bargain substitute?

This is not remotely new.

Hey HP did you hear abut how hanging a tennis ball can tell the driver exactly when to stop when parking in the garage?

Oops you just took away the lame auto industry's Next Innovation, side parking cameras in all high end cars.

Let us not worry about dings in parking lots.
How about making sure you do n't forget to take the baby I the backseat, I case you accidentally forgot that.

On Top Gear I saw they made a helium balloon that could be deployed in a car park from a car by pushing the unlock door button. I thought that was a very useful idea! Until that is mainstreamed, I'll continue using the valet. Saves so much time wandering the car park!
