You cannot prevent incompetence and dysfunctional parenting, but you can certainly hold people responsible for their actions.

16 years? She's not going to last 16 hours. Justice will be served jailhouse style.

My parents often gave in and let my sister have a "small piece" of cake or pie. They felt guilty that she was deprived. Somehow I think they really believed that a bit of sugar wasn't going to do much damage. At the next shot time there would just be an increase in her shot. Were they wrong? Yes but not monsters like this lady. She paid absolutely no attention to her child!!! Children diagnosed that early often do not live long lives and she obviously ensured it. (I remember a kid eating a piece of gum once and going into a coma. He died at age 30.) This story sounds like she knew what would happen and wanted her to die. Sixteen years in prison? With that sentence won't she be out in 4 or 5 years? Let's just hope none of her other kids ever become diabetic.

That might have been true in the past, but it's just not current. My son is a T1D and in this day & age they are perfectly capable of having as long and healthy a life as any other non-diabetic kid. (My son was diagnosed at age 2, by the way.) Yes, even as recently as 20 years ago, T1s were just assumed to have a shorter lifespan and complications, but the complication rate today for T1s WHO MANAGE THEIR DISEASE is around something like 4%. Type 1 diabetics who check their blood glucose OFTEN and adjust their insulin according to their food intake and activity level and who lead active lives aren't going blind or losing limbs anymore. It's also stressed in diabetic education when you or your child is diagnosed that "a carb is a carb" -- no food is completely off the table. Of course, they shouldn't OVERindulge, but no one should. Type 2s, now that's a whole different story; there's often lifestyle issues to plow through there.

Sorry for the rant, but I hate hate hate misinformation like that being disseminated like it's fact, when it's just not true. Type 1s can do/eat/be anything they want, as long as they stay on top of their disease. Period.

Didn't mean to offend you or anyone. But in my experience that IS REALITY and FACT. One sister died at age 49 and another died last month at age 45. Both became diabetic at age 13. I know what you say is true that the chances of longer life has much increased with food management and exercise and that is a wonderful encouraging thing. I hope your child lives to be old and gray and with your guidance they have a really good chance of it. A healthy lifestyle can help make all the difference no doubt about it. But there
still are many that don't.

What this woman did was bad - very bad and she will pay. The thing is, all kids want sweets. Think about how hard it is to say no to your kids when they beg for a popsicle on hot summer days. Managing the health of a child with Type 1 diabetes must be especially challenging. I'm sure she thought "one more treat won't hurt..." This woman just doesn't have the mental capacity to manage the health of someone with such a serious medical condition. I think this is more of a case of criminal ignorance rather than criminal evil.

agree, she pleaded guilty. There are other kids in the family. Better to make her do community service in a diabetes clinic. If one of her kids has diabetes there is a chance another one will.
I don't see anyone wins from this 16 year sentence.

She didn't bother learning how to deal with the kids problems, constantly failed to take advice & caused her a painful and unnecessary death.

Perhaps the next useless mother will look at this & grasp what caring for a child involves.

I remember when this first happened. The mother said she just wanted her daughter to be happy and to feel like a normal kid. I don't think she has the mental capacity to understand what diabetes is. Sad this beautiful little girl had to die from ignorance.

''Following Butler's death and her mother's arrest, their father, Marqus Butler, told WFAA-TV that Jones was "a good mother" and "a very caring person."

He protected this little girls murderer, that's why.

He probably didn't want to be bothered with the kids.  He may be one of those who just makes them, moves on, makes many more with many other women and lets the mommies break them because he's too busy being the maker to be the care-giver.

Yeah, like the sad story that's probably happening every day in your trailer when you beat your wife, smack your obese kids, and kick your dog. You're as bad as this woman I'm sure.

I think you might be confused about this child's condition. She had juvenile diabetes, Type 1. Actually I don't understand most of what you've said but in response to this " Control your blood sugar, folks, or you will live to regret it..." the "folks" you address are presumably adults who'd have Type 2 diabetes - the kind that we have some control over avoiding. Type 1 diabetes which happens to children, is just genetic, we have no ability to avoid it and it just has to be managed.

there are more and more kids actually getting type 2 due to diet and lack of exercise. The image doesn't show her to be fat but diabetes is becoming such a problem. Estimated 10% of population have it while only half know it. I wonder how they picked up that she had it in the first place.

My post was not to children, but to adults. Yes, I AM speaking about DMT2.

This child counted on her mother to guide and assist her with her disease. A child cannot grasp the seriousness of this disease. I lay blame at the feet of the mother.

Hope this clears it up.
