The empathetic qualities of animals like Zoe are great gifts to mankind.

Great potential because of their long life span and physical streangth..We should be selectively breeding them for waste control ability..Not much in their genetically for an open range animal but it I'm sure any latent ability in a few animals can be breed if it's selected as a highly desirable trait.

It is amazing what Animals can do to assist in rehabilitation and with coping with a disease. I wish so many of you who are touched by this story weren't so vile against Ann Romney because she had a horse to deal with her MS. But unfortunately you all felt attacking her disability was A OK.

It is the truth. You all attacked her disability and attacked the fact she used a horse for treatment. Why do you celebrate this kid using a horse for treatment and vilify her?

Shallow Cold Hearted people that is why.

It is actually a therapy horse. But it dances also. Also competes in the Olympics.

Fantastic story in many ways.
Just goes to show what a little bit of "adaptation" in what people accept as the norm, can lead to, which is fully including all children in all their age-appropriate school settings, with all the other age-appropriate peers who attend usually without a second thought.

Don't want to end post on a bad note, so I'll try to mention this as non-judgmentally as I can;

No one is ever shackled to a wheelchair.
Neither are they rightfully described as, for instance, "...a wheelchair-bound woman", boy, man, or anything else.
Individuals USE wheelchairs, walkers, and many other adaptive devices to join in with the activities of the general populace, to the best of their abilities.
A simple question can be asked of oneself, regarding all the different expectations, constrictions, restrictions, etc., that are so often placed upon people with different abilities than those which seem average, commonplace, or "normal"(ugh);
"If I was in the same position as THAT person, would I want someone to call me 'that retarded girl', or that 'wheelchair-bound boy', or 'that Down Syndrome guy', etc., or would I ALSO want to have a horse, or a dog for sight-assistance (and so on), and would I like better to be called 'a MAN with cerebral palsy', 'a WOMAN with a learning disability', 'a GIRL with Down Syndrome', etc.

PEOPLE FIRST, it IS important.

What a wonderful site to see. A bond between these two. Earlier today I was crying about a horse being killed, and later on in the afternoon I am crying about a boy and his horse. I like this story a whole lot better.

What a beautiiful bond. You can see in both of their eyes that there is an understanding. Zaiden and Zoe a dynamic duo. Just earlier today I was crying because of a man who killed a beautiful horse and tonight I am crying because of a wonderful story about another horse.
I have to say, I like this story more.

Zoe could live into her 30's and will make a great companion for Zaiden. As for the teacher and the school, it isn't toleration it is the disability act that allows Zaiden to have Zoe with him.

I was thinking the same thing. The longer lifespan of a horse makes it a perfect candidate.

Minis have become great service animals and yes, they do live as many as three dog life spans. They can become somewhat housebroken as long as they are taken outside regularly, with a few accidents as told here. These two are so precious and are made for each other.

They make diapers for show horses. I don't know why they couldn't make one for this horse.
