Here's the good news. Most boy scout troops don't run like the national committee. Most don't give a hoot about the kids' sexual orientation and they are very watchful to prevent bullying. This is a sensitive time now, and I don't think the local troops can afford to come across as bigots.
How about it? Anybody out there with scouts?  I'm not a leader nor do I have a kid in scouts, but out  Read More...

Being both a Christian and an Eagle Scout, it's very hard for me to accept that Rick Perry is either. Neither Christ nor the Boy Scout organization that I grew up with condoned the bigotry the Texas Governor puts forward from his office. While the current BSA administration may support the positions bigots like Perry bring to the table, that was not always the case, and where the Bible is concerned, Jesus Christ was never quoted in saying anything about gays at all.

Sorry ! Read the Bible! He speaks about Homosexuals, thiefs, liars, adulterers, fornicators, the list goes on... However, he loves us all equally. He doesn't approve of us sinning thats where his mercy and grace are upon us and he gives us choices. It is up to us if we decide we want to change.

For most of its history the issue of homosexuality wasn''t even on the Scouts radar, wasn't in any of its rules, and was never mentioned in local troop or pack meetings. In prehistory when I was a Scout, most kids in Scouts didn't even have a clue about any kind of sexuality until their later years. The values of Scouting were taught and learned well before then, even to the kids who at some point realized they were gay. My guess is that similar things occurred in the girls organizations too, the Girl Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls. Governor Perry should go to church if he wants to pray.

Is Rickie kidding us? Does anyone remember Rickie mooning over a bottle of maple syrup when he was campaigning in Maine? He was camping all over the place - talk about closet queens - truely "Del Monte" in the tall can!

Can some liberal tell me why Madonna picks the boy scouts for her gay comments? Why doesn't Madonna want to put lesbians in the girl scouts? Something must have happened when Madonna was a Catholic girl scout. I'll bet Madonna got kicked out of the girl scouts for hitting on the other girls. Now after 40 years, Madonna still can't let that rejection go..

The Girl Scouts don't have an anti-homosexual policy like the Boy Scouts do.

Did Rick Perry miss the months and months of news of how thousands of boy scouts were molested, and the organization covered it all up?
06:34 PM on 03/24/2013
I think America is forgetting Rick Perry had a gay affair a few years back, as governor.

If indeed scouts were molested, bu leting in gays and gay scoutmaster, there will be more molestation and rape cases. Gays cant control themselves.

' “It’s fascinating that someone would make that kind of gratuitous shot at an organization that has probably done as much to promote young men to the type of values that the vast majority of the people in this country aspire to,” Perry told Beck. '
It's fascinating to me that this goof Perry thinks a specific sexual orientation and a traditional religious affiliation uniquely identify a young man of strong values, against so many vocal counter-examples. I think Perry's been living under a rock cavorting with slime molds.

> Hopefully the board will follow their historic position of keeping the Scouts strongly supportive of the values that make Scouting this very important and impactful organization

Would that include the "perversion files" and the complete lack of accountability when it came to protecting scout members from sexual abuse?

I find it to be a shame that an organization would openly discriminate against gay families and still call itself "American" frankly.

I think what alot of people don't realize is that Scouting has been around since 1910, well before alternate lifestyles where anywhere near publically accepted. Tradition is a hard thing to break for one.

Secondly, troops and packs are sponsored by other organizations. This means that these organizations provide a place for them to meet along with other assistance. Many of these are church's, Legion Posts as well as private organizations.

Not only does BSA have to decide if they will lose membership by not allowing gays, they also have to decide if they will lose membership by allowing gays in addition to losing sponsors. Not very many sponsors have cancelled charters because of the current policy.

Something else many do not know is that BSA has put out a preliminary survey asking current and former scout's and leaders what they think about changing BSA policy. As an Eagle Scout and former leader, I can say they where some very specific questions and in my mind, showed a serious interest in changing scout policy.

Who is this survey going to? I'm a scout mom in a pack and state that does NOT discriminate against gays, yet if the national office leaves this ban in place I will likely pull my child out of scouting. That is very sad since I have yet to meet one local volunteer that would turn away a gay child or parent.

I am a member of National Eagle Scout Association and a former Cubmaster. I got the survey from one of the two. Ask your Cubmaster if he/she recieved it.

My pack didn't discriminate either. It never came up to my knowledge so I want to say it wouldn't have. Can't speak for the board or the church the pack was chartered out of.

It's not the state or the pack that "discriminates". It's a BSA policy your pack is choosing to ignore.

All I can say is give it time. I do believe the national office will change the policy.

The survey was emailed to me through NESA. I've went back in my mailbox but I think I deleted it after I took it.

From what I understand, it was emailed out through the BSA contact lists. Is your info up to date?

Here is a link to the BSA review plan:

I'll dig around further and see if I can locate the link for the survey. If so, I'll reply on this comment thread.

It's sad that in Perry's world bigotry, bias, and hate are "the type of values that the vast majority of the people in this country aspire to."
