If they knew that the private insurance mandate that Roberts upheld was a long-sought Republican policy proposal over 20 years old, they would not be so misinformed about what that ruling says about the ideology of the court. We have the media to blame, for posing simplistic, color-coded false dichotomies as debate between liberal vs. conservative, especially in the age of Obama, when we have a peculiarly  Read More...

The problem with today's conservatives is that they know absolutely nothing about real "Conservatism" or "Liberalism". if they knew they would find lots of issues to agree with liberals. Not that the conservatives on the court are any different either. Real Conservative economists argued against monopolies and corporate subsidies and protectionist tariffs(Bush 2001 Steel tariffs). You see Tea party folks dressed like Jefferson, not knowing that Jefferson himself was against central banking, unpaid-for aggressive wars, etc.. Reading is their problem not their ideology, which they need to learn first.

A good number of Republicans also believe the universe was created 6,000 years ago and that carbon dioxide does not absorb energy in the infrared range. Legally, it has been somewhat cynically observed that the Constitution means whatever the Supreme Court says it means. That is now outdated. The new standard is that the Constitution means whatever right-wing baggers say it means.

Well, you can't complain about being suppressed if you don't pretend that the deck is stacked against you everywhere.

Ask if the Court is business-friendly...bet you get a majority opinion there. Look at how business cases are usually judged. Predominately for the business and against the consumer. Ergo, the Court is conservative. Businesses are people after all.

What is interesting from the results of this poll is how it is almost a mirror image. On the liberal and conservative ends, the strong tendency for the respondent was to believe that the court was notlike them. For more moderate respondents in each party, there was more of a tendency to believe that the court was like them. Independents were far more likely to believe the court was like them, with about equal minorities believing the court was either liberal or conservative.

By the numbers, the court is close to moderate with a bit of a conservative lean. Scotusblog has examined the statistics over the last several years, through 2011. In recent years (current justices), major cases that have been decided 5-4 upon ideological lines have tended to go to the conservative side more than half the time. Kennedy has been the swing vote 84% of the time (42% of those swing votes were to the liberal side and 42% were to the conservative side).

This Court is liberal only if compared to Nicolas II, Kaiser Wilhelm and Louis XIV.

The right wing conservative don't believe anyone is Conservative enough. They are so far out in right field and out of touch with reality. Any ideology that is so extreme is destine for failure.

It's the result of the systematic attack on intellectualism that has been a hallmark of the modern Conservative movement. Anyone with an advanced degree or that has dedicated their life to an intellectual pursuit is, by modern conservatism, a liberal. "Common sense" is something that get overwritten as you learn more according to conservatives. Actual facts and SCOTUS decisions are of little relevance.

Still further evidence, if further evidence be necessary, that Republicans these days aren't playing with a full deck.

I would say that is the other way around. The Libs are the party of hate, yet they speak equal rights, but they haven't been very nice to the religious community or the right. If you want people to think you are the party of peace and love, then you have to treat other's the way you want to me treated. Being a bigot, goes both ways.

More evidence that repubs are completely divorced from reality. It amazes me that a group of people can be so totally engaged in groupthink and cannot see the truth staring them in the face.
