Just another Progressive Liberal group using veterans and veteran status to seem legit.

Red herring. The TRUE problem is that due to HIPAA regulations medical professionals cannot report potentially violent psychopaths to the authorities, who then cannot report said information to the national instance check system, and therefore the mentally ill can sometimes have access to guns that they shouldn't, as was the case in the Virginia Tech massacre. Also, the solution to there being bad guys with guns is for there to be more good guys with guns, to stop them. End so-called gun-free zones which (except for the Az shooting) are where these crimes keep happening. Finally, read the US Constitution. It matters. Congress shall pass no law infringing on our right to bear arms... those words mean something.

Dead on. The number of laws we have working at cross purposes in this country is a big part of creating sanctuary for the very people we need to find and help before something goes wrong. Little more than lip service had been paid to this fundamental flaw in all of this debate.

The NRA called for the inclusion of mental health in the NICS background checks. Who got it pulled? The ACLU said it violated the rights of the mentally ill...

Yet we don't see that kind of stuff being included in any kind of legislation do we. If someone walks into an shrink's office or a counselor's office and divulges something to the fact that they are a danger to themselves or others the professionals should have a way to report it to the authorities so their names can be added to the NCIC list. If that had happened then Virginia Tech and Aurora, Co would never have happened. No what we have is Chuck Schumer trying to state that the only way that this new background check will work is with gun registration. Funny we have had background checks since 1994 this just expands on it and no registration. Besides why do you need a gun registered before it is bought to find out if a person can buy said gun?

They want you to have to go down to your local firearms dealer, pay them $30-50 for a transfer fee, pay the $10-20 background check fee to sell a gun to your neighbor. That's like requiring someone to run an MVR on someone before they can buy your old car.

Liberals are so concerned with voter ID laws disproportionately affecting minorities. It's not a very big leap in reason to be concerned that universal background checks might do the same. Who is racist again?

Gun rights are a fundamental constitutional right and must not be subject to prior restraint. Only after a person uses a gun, attempts to use a gun or conspires to use a gun to inflict illegal harm should the government step in.

As a vet, I have this to say:

Their status as vets has nothing to do with this issue. There is no more reason to listen to them than any other democrat political action group.

So they support the registration of guns....oh...it doesn't say that, but that is what would be necessary. In the article, they mention Loughner. They decline to mention that HE PASSED AN BACKGROUND CHECK.

So... how are background checks supposed to stop crime again?

Sandy Hook could have not been prevented by UBR -he stole guns. And Jared Lee Loughner passed background check. So using this stories or almost any mass shoting for UBC agenda is stupid.
In almost all mass-shotings person everpassed background check or obtained their gun criminaly(Sandy Hook, Columbine)

What a twisted article. The media is manipulating everything it can to further limit the Second Amendment.

As a Veteran I am seriously offended by the deception of calling a Left Wing Political Action Committee that has so obviously attacked the Republican Party and Conservatives and never ever attacked the Democratic Party, or any liberal cause, a "Veterans" organization.

I don't object to Left Wing Vets, but be honest that you ARE Left Wingers with an anti conservative, anti republican agenda.

Please don't use your military service to deceive people.

And I doubt very seriously that a majority of veterans support any form of gun control.

I agree with you. The vast majority of veterans do not support further limits on the Second Amendment. After all, they served to defend the constitution -- not destroy it.

Dear Friends,

Wow, he is complianing he had to pass a back ground check to get into the military, wow, apply for job, and see if they do a check.

Marines are responsible for protection nukes on ships, would not want them to pass a background check, would we?

I agree, sometimes it seems the best response to the " PC regulars" that haunt Huff n Puff is a simple "Bahhhh." At least it is a familiar voice to them. :-)

First of all, the premise is entirely inaccurate - the weapons soldiers use are already not legal for civilians, and soldiers don't have to pass any extra checks to get legal weapons. Soldiers actually get access to weapons civilians will never touch with the most basic of security checks, so the reality is that the premise is not only wrong, but 180-degrees-from-reality wrong.

Second of all, the answer to the gay marriage issue isn't making interracial marriage illegal. You don't remedy repression by expanding it to new groups.

Third of all, "veteran" has become a code word for "violently deranged terrorist", and veterans have already been identified by gun controllers as the first group who should be disarmed, so they're really advocating their own almost certain repression in the future.
