There is / was a company which did nothing but check names for new products that would be distrubuted Internationally- One name that sticks out was a Japanese car that translated into "lady part"- only it was the clinical name for lady part

This was bound to happen soon. Am sure it will continue to do so and has happened in the past to many Designers given the numerous "exotic" names they have to give each item and the many, many languages out there.

One of my favorite Designers has a dress named "bari" (or such), "Bari" means God in a certain Language I know.

I have no idea who or why would anyone in the Spanish Speaking language would get upset, I have no idea how many spanish "dialects' are there, I speak spanish, and have had a few encounters with other spanish speaking people, what to me means really nothing, it sure as hell is an insult to others..... So I have LEARN to live with it.......... Apologize when I say something that "offends" someone, and ignore when the others say anything that could "offend' me..... After all the language in the USA is english...

Thank you wish more Latino's would learn English. As far as those shoes are concerned I wouldn't wear then or even buy them. Not worth the $$$$

So let Target rename the shoes URINE since in the USA the language is english. Wonder if english speaking americans will get offended & demand Target change the name. Understand now? Since you are not hispanic it seems, you cannot empathize with them ever no matter if you speak their language or not. So let's change the name of the shoes to the english translation, will solve everything. And LEARN to live with that name. In english...

The odd name thing reminds me of a time when I was about six and went with my mother to her friend's brand new home. When we arrived the woman told us to "hang your coats in the mud room." As a child of that age, I was shocked such a nice new home would have a room made out of mud, lol.

Note to Target: Research the name of your merchandise before it goes on the market. It helps a lot......

It's not the name that people go by mostly it's all Marketing making outrageous claims that the gullible believe.

Take the sneakers Sketchers. Big lawsuit. Why? They were touted to make your butt and legs what they couldn't be without exercise. Do you think anyone cared what Sketchers means if anything? No. People were mad that the shoe didn't do what it was hyped to do, skinny your legs and butt. Buyers chose to believe nonsense and wanted to make others pay for believing hype. No cared what Sketchers means if anything. 'Course if the name Sketchers means nothing people will make a big stink out of a made up word for some petty reason.

And so it goes with marketing departments too heady to do their etymological vetting. I have a couple friends who have worked their entire adult lives in just such a department for a huge US personal products producer known to every American, as common as apple pie. But anyway, the error reminds me of a laundry detergent test-marketed years ago in a few major cities. It fared extremely poorly in New York City. Investigation uncovered the meaning of "Drek" in Yiddidsh: what one flushes in that white porcelain compote in the bathroom. Imagine "Drek - for all your laundry needs". That went well. NOT. Our English language is the most fascinating playground in the world. Too bad so few speak it, or care to trace its components.

This "unfortunate" name pick reminds me of Cheverolet back in the day. They could not understand why the Chevy Vega would not sell in Latin American countries. Turns out it means "no go" in Spanish!

The problem with the Vega was that it was classical union made junk. I know, because I worked there in the early/mid 70's. I got to repair the ones coming off the line with missing parts. It was more important to read your novels than do your job in those days. Now, they have I-pads.

Target products like shoes are CHinese junk.
I bought a pair of Mack Work boots. The soles got wet and fell off.
Went to the hardware Isle. They make glue to reglue shoes.
It must be a common problem when they make a specific product like that.
Dicks Sporting goods is another place with junky merchandise,Especially the clothes.

Target's shoe department has already been their Achilles heel forever. I can't believe a company who is this savvy most of the time, can't come up with well-made, affordable, comfortable and stylish shoes. I don't have a problem at all buying Target t-shirts because they're all of the above. But how has nobody ever taken a close, serious look at the shoe section with all its rubber exhaust and "Made in China"ness?
01:39 AM on 04/10/2013
Just throw everything out the window if it means something offensive to Spanish speakers? That's not a good message to send to those of us from different ancestries.
02:16 AM on 04/10/2013
They're trying to sell them to illegal immigrants- you know, the ones who come here and are magically exempt from paying sales taxes.
Well, they're probably trying to cover the whole immigrant market anyhow. They're going to need decent shoes when the US kicks them out of the country.
01:03 PM on 04/10/2013
Are you really that moronic? How can they buy something and not pay sales tax when it's charged at the register?
03:40 AM on 04/10/2013
Did you even read the article? They're not removing anything. You'll still have your precious sandal. Just under a name that doesn't mean something stupid.
