How did society get so screwed up that its people will pay ridiculous prices for tiny, shiny rocks? I can understand the appeal in days gone by. But these days you could get a cheaper gem or manufactured gem that looks identical to the naked eye.

If truly beautiful and rare things did not exist in the world, there would be no reason to learn about them. And they do make lovely statements, when one has the spare change.

Now, people spending money they don't have to own them is one thing--but then again, the person who bought this is probably not going to live with it on the street and join the ranks of the unwashed to be able to own it. So what is really your problem?
05:34 AM on 04/18/2013
THE problem is it is a crystal, a rock and not worth it's weight in anything in the real world. Can't eat it, won't keep you warm, can't make clothing out of it; yet some fool just paid a fortune just so it can be locked up all safe and tidy, out of sight except for the few who might get to "look" at it.

It is just as silly as getting all worked up about "gold"; a soft, mostly USELESS metal that is heavy and shiny. Yet the stuff rules the world.

Insane.

HP. Less stories about opulence, more about real people, ok?

Leonardo gave his life for that diamond.

I'd call it the Pink Panther!

I wonder how big it is. They say its weight but not it dimensions. Also I wondered if Roy -Tang is related to poo.

this diamond is so beautiful, but it is dangerous
05:25 AM on 04/18/2013
By the same logic, banks are dangerous. Fort Knox is dangerous. Geez.

$39,000,000 to Haiti would prsosper the entire country. Everyone would have new clothes, shoes, food, medical supplies, tooth brushes and tooth paste, soap, shaving material, and happy faces----but someone figured that a glass rock was more important. God Bless!

Tell me someone who prefer to buy something like this is going to be Philantropist? Very unlikely. It is a necessity to impress among their circle of friends just like someone who have the biggest yacht simply because they can out do each other on wealth showmanship. They don't give a darn about the people starving on the street. They will tell you that to keep your pants up and tie your tubes and not having more children because you breed like pigs and rats just like the famous quote from Leona Helmsley.

We do not know if the buyer isn't a philanthropist. Perhaps he or she is. Could be Bill Gates or Buffett for all we know. And they are definetly philanthropists.

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend but only the dumbest of the dumb blondes would waste 39 million on a cut and polished rock.

I think the idea is to get some rich guy to buy it for her.

The top wealthiest people in the USA are liberals not conservatives like many here seem to believe, they are worth 66 billion easily and spending money to buy a ring for a few million is nothing on their budget ... but since the ring is originally from India royalty and now just purchased by Jewelers in England , it'll be interesting who buys it next.... I think it is pretty darn HOT !

If this stone had belonged to Queen Consort Mary of Teck, I wonder if she would have put in a tiara, or made it fit for her stomachers. Thank God women don't deal with stomachers anymore.
