This is a very weird but interesting study. Any excuse to watch David Lynch works for me. I wonder if Tylenol will be able to market this somehow.

Acetaminophen is known to cause really disastrous liver damage in large doses. (Did the researchers not know this? How did they get this experiment past their university's Human Subjects Officer?) Start pounding Tylenol for existential dread and you may wind up with some real existential problems.

They aren't using large doses. The RDD is 3000mg. The experiment used 1000.

Demerol will probably do the trick. Probably other opioids, too, but Demerol is the only one I've had. In my experience it will eliminate all of your worries. I'm pretty sure that if I'd been told they were going to put me through a wood chipper my concerns would have been limited to the logical reasons that it would be a bad thing. There's a reason that people use heroin often enough to become addicted.

"The others were asked to write about dental pain, which would be unpleasant, but likely wouldn't invoke any existential anxieties."

Interesting. Obviously they have never experienced "dry socket. " That "unpleasant" feeling made me want to die. I have had a ruptured appendix, dislocated knee with torn tendons, and compound bone fractures with shattered bones sticking out of my skin. Nothing has ever hurt a fraction of what dry socket did.

Critics: There was a very recent study which provided support for acetaminophen relieving minor depressive and anxious symptoms (not any disorders, just symptoms). This is yet another study finding that acetaminophen can relieve psycholigical stress. Why wouldnt it? The mechanisms of stress work similarly throughout the body. Also, for those who are not familiar, please read up on terror management theory and mortality salience research...many clearly do not understand what is meant by the use of the terminology "death anxiety" in this study.

You will be relaxed if you survive your fatal disease ; what kind of relax you get when you know you already are going to be no more ?

I wish they would market the 1980 blend of Tylenol: Codeine and Cyanide. They should spring that guy from jail and hire him to make a new blend FOR the existentialists of this world.

I don't have a fear of death per se; rather, I welcome and embrace it, and actually, considering the direction this world is headed, I hope it comes very soon. I have no fear of an afterlife or postmortem judgment, and I don't feel any real connection with the rest of society or see any point in contributing when none of it really amounts to anything anyway. I just hope shrinks aren't going to start requiring that people like me take a daily regimen of Tylenol, or pushing to have it put in the water so that people like me become more altruistic and spiritual and (gasp) people-oriented. I can't be bothered with the frivolous nature of friendship, romance, or family life, and I don't see any point in volunteering for causes when nothing really changes anyway. All those rock stars left Africa after the '80s and guess what: they're still starving. I'm leaving this world the way I came into it, with no impact whatsoever. Existential contemplation, and apathy -- not dread -- doesn't hurt anyone else and is quite all right with me.

You actually do need some help. I am not being snarky. You really do need some professional help. Seriously. Consider it. You are missing out on most of what makes life good. Please go get some help.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass, thank you. Not interested in phony spirituality or superficial connections with people I neither know nor care about. Dating, friendship, family, kids -- none of this interests me, and who am I really hurting by being a loner and ticking off the days until I go? I've broken no laws, offended no one, caused no problems -- no harm, no foul. If a tree falls in the forest, whether or not it makes a sound is really of no consequence to me. May you be successful in the life you lead, and may all of us go peacefully along our separate ways.

I noticed that I sleep more soundly if I take Tylenol before bed. Maybe there is something to this.

What the article doesn't mention is whether or not these 'dread allaying' effects come only with acetaminophen, or with all pain relievers? What made the researchers choose Tylenol?
