Hey thanks for the info.. I couldn't figure out why it got so quiet after I cut all my trees down last week. I'm going green, building a log home.

So, if I understood that correctly, they're hearing the sound of a decomposing, dehydrating tree? Ok...

On a side note, every now & again, noises escape the lower region of my hind end.... I think $2mil/yr should cover the cost for me to discover the cause. I'll bet I could get it done too if I presented that proposal to Congress...

If man is so smart, why do some men live only 100 years and some trees live thousands of years?

Life spans have nothing to do with how smart a creature is.

Nothing like taking a date on an evening walk through the woods and telling her there's two kinds of trees, day trees and night trees. How night trees talk amongst themselves planning to reach out and grab her. Girls eat that stuff up.

This article makes me feel: As we destroy the earth, let's listen to it dying :/

I know, that's how I felt last week

Just because we can't yet MEASURE the pain of a living thing does not mean that pain in any or all living things does not exist.

Trees don't "feel" anything.

Your tax dollars at work.

Look, it's real simple. When there is a drought, trees start drying out. Then, if there is a fire, they burn.

End of study. Gimme the money these "scientists" are wasting....

OMG...

with the venerable Redwood tree...well, its bark is fairly fire resistant.

and no, I'm not wrong.  (smh)

Your attitude toward science is poor. Also, where in the article did it say that these scientists were funded by federal grants? Furthermore, the scientists are French.

We draw closer to the realization that all living things have communication skills. Be kind to nature and she will be kind to you .

Going by the article I fail to see that it's actually the tree itself making the sounds...it's the bubbles within the tree that is actually making the sounds...there is a difference.

Sort of like the grumbling in your stomach when you're hungry? Is it the grumbling or your hunger that is making sound? There would be no bubbles produced unless the tree was reacting to something, therefore its the tree.

When the tree is thirsty bubbles indicate that it needs water, thus the tree communicates that .

When they learn how to control the amount of rain the trees get, this might help. As of now this a huge waste of time and money.

Your statement doesn't make any sense. How are we going to learn to control the amount of water a tree gets if we don't do the research?
10:39 PM on 05/02/2013
If we figure out how to make it rain, to help our crops in dry areas, then maybe we can spend some time and money on how much water the trees need. There is nothing we can do today to help except for a small tree in a yard. We can not water the forest.
07:44 PM on 05/02/2013
BS! The key words in that article are " French Scientist".
