It appears these new churches are relying on terrorism to drive out the traditional beliefs of the indigenous people.

Dollars to donuts they are instead incorporating those beliefs, and hence, we get tragedy such as this. The belief in witches is nothing new in Nigeria, and I'm sure stuff like this has been going on for centuries.

Except that they aren't American. They are Nigerian, usually either Igbo or Yoruba.

This is such a tragic, heartbreaking story. Religion can one of the worst of mental poisons.

When you know the truth, the truth will set you free -- from religion.

Let me recast that second sentence: "Religion can be one of the worst kinds of mental poison."

now we know why the last time jesus went to church...he kicked over all the furniture and ran all the church people out with a whip. now we know why jesus called all the church people ...scribes...pharisees, hypocrites and a generation of vipers. it would seem that nothing has changed.

Don't think that this wouldn't be going on in this country if the laws allowed it. Keep in mind the pastor of McCain's vice presidential choice.

Very true. People underestimate how dangerous American religious extremists are. They use fear as the primary tactic for raising obedient children. They do this, of course, because the usual purpose of encouraging obedience in children is to help said children to be civil, gracious, and considerate in society at large, something extremists have no interest in. But they still need obedience, so they use fear to create children who are obedient to their parents and church but horribly maladjusted for life in the real world. I feel so sorry for children born into that kind of environment.

Extremists of all kinds are what is most dangerous. The problem is con - artists taking advantage of the poor and uneducated.

I don't like the "sales" aspect of religion (or lots of other things either like "don't question have faith - present in some but not all churches) but it really is secondary in this situation. What can be done for these people?

For the most part religion is childish and sinister. In Africa, just sinister.

I hope you're talking about religion and not the post.
