Of the top ten, the only place I would consider is Austin, TX. Yes, it's Bush country, but that's more Dallas and Midland. Austin is cosmopolitan; great food and good people. The hill country is the prettiest part of Texas, and you can live out of Austin among the bluebonnets in the spring.

All that being said, I love California. Texas: been there; done that.

geez, i live in so cal, and we are supposedly resoundingly "pro-business" HOWEVER when i first began selling jewelry in my little corner of paradise, i was shocked to find that i had to pay city and county taxes at the same flat rate as corporations moving to the area, but there were no services for small and micro businesses like myself and other artisans. not one service, all that tax money going for pretty publications trying to get pottery barn to open a store downtown. phooey!

E. Tenn is no place to start a "green" business, either. Too many ignorant people.

Well, I notice that the 'greenest' places are not places to start jobs at all. Gee, wonder why that would be?

Of course there is plenty of opportunity in areas that people don't want to live in. But it really depends on the type of small business you want to start. Not a large pool of professionals living in Lubbuck, TX.

Correct. I live in Rochester New, York which is not on the list. We are doing quite well with start up companies in the bio-medical field because of the numerous local colleges.

It has Charlotte listed at #7 and says the unemployment rate is low. The unemployment rate here is right around 12%. Some sort of fuzzy math going on.

Looking at all the balloons, it appears the article omitted part of the headline. It should read, "Best Places to Start a Business Selling Bibles."

Yeah...maybe the wages would be low, but then you would have to actually deal with your workforce everyday and that could be frustrating.

small businesses will be advised to carefully consider whether they'll participate in 'telecheck' - seems like a fast way to clear checks, BUT they sometimes link people to other people's accounts and don't clear checks - creates a huge hassle - then they want customers lisence copied, soc.sec. # and card copied, bank statements mailed to them - makes for unhappy customers -
