here is the solution, dont do anything. If a bird is dumb enough to fly into one of these objects then they deserve to be killed

Their has to be a way to divert the bird flight path away from the wind turbines

this is their home territory, it's not a "flight path." they ride air currents and dive for prey on the ground where they live. the solution is to leave them to it and install rooftop solar and upgrade for efficiency on a massive national scale and stop the Big Wind Robber Barons from industrializing our wilderness - we don't have any right to kill golden eagles or "divert" them from their homes just so BP Wind can get rich.

Jon...migratory birds have a "set" flight pattern !!!!!...if a 'mill is in that pattern...a bird will teach itself to know...then it will alter it's flight just enough to miss by flying around it !!!!!!

If YOU have an idea that can solve this contact http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org.
I am no bird expert, but it would seem a simple solution could be found. My suggestion would be a "dog whistle" type ultra sonic device that would deter any bird from getting too close, They make similar devices to rid homes/barns of rodents.
or just play Slim Whitman's song "When I'm Calling You" on a loop
01:13 PM on 05/14/2013
I currently work on a wind project in southern California and they have a pretty ingenious solution here: they have the type of avian radar (radar for finding birds) that is used at airports. They provide biologists to monitor it from a specially designed tower and the radar indicates whenever a bird is within a few miles of the project. The biologist looks out his window, confirms the bird is there and instantly shuts off any nearby turbines. So far: 0 raptor deaths on this project.

sounds expensive, there must be a simple cheap way to frighten birds away though.

there are two things people don't understand...birds can hear the noise that is emitted...so they can fly around these'mills...Native Americans use the eagle in Ceremonies...but when the eagle became the national bird...using them was made illegal...the Apache Nation can still use them however !!!!!...if an Indian...has one feather from an eagle...they go to prison...if a white kills and eagle...they get a slap on the wrist !!!!!...oohhh...and what about eagles and other birds being sucked into jet engines ???...where's the "concern" and outrage over that ????...this article is blown out of proportion

I think the correct term is "Assault windmills".
12:28 PM on 05/14/2013
We can ruin our environment one bird at a time, or we can do it faster by poisoning the earth & air. I don't know which is best.
There are wind farms here where I live and the outside temperature today is going to be 106F.
I do know I like having air conditioning in my home and my car so I can drive to work & the store. I know I am not the only one. Yes, I feel guilt every time the a/c kicks on. Yes, I feel guilt when I think about how I contribute to air pollution and the demand for gasoline.
12:36 PM on 05/14/2013
You could install Solar-Powered Air Conditioning (seriously). The solar panels put your roof in the shade so it takes less energy to cool your house. Or, you could install a misting system to keep your roof wet at a few gallons of water per hour from about 10 am to about 5 pm. The sun cannot heat a wet roof -- it can only heat a dry roof.

Except I am a renter. Getting my landlord to install solar...well, we can dream.

generally, Big Wind produces no power during A/C hours - it produces when demand for electricity is lowest, and the grid can not store it. so, if you want to discuss how to offset A/C bills, rooftop solar (put it on a carport that shades your car, and on your roof which will reduce cooling loads by 38%, per UCSD) and passive heating/cooling are the answers. not to mention, they promote grid reliability, reduce gas burning, improve property values, create more and better jobs, and strengthen our democracy and economy - the opposite of Big Wind and Big Transmission.

Birds that fly into the reflecting window of a highrise building? What about one that flies in front of a shotgun.

Bird strikes at our airports are more relevant...The numbers are huge... Do you want to ground air carriers...??? One a month..??

This is very sad. Maybe they need to come up with a new way to create wind energy? Poor birds. And endangered ones at that.

Yup I don't deny it's happening, but I wonder if the folks in the areas reported are using the larger and slower turning turbines like they do in Calif. it's been shown to reduce raptor bird deaths. So hmmm follow the money on this post and see if it links back to the global warming/fossilfuel promoting/koch's et al.

Cats kill more birds than anything else. Given liberals are more prone to have a cat, these people should have a background check before they get a cat.
12:48 PM on 05/14/2013
Liberals are more prone to have a cat???
So does that mean that conservatives are more prone to have rats, since they have so much in common with them?

No, actually it would be a dog. There are studies on this. Video gamers are more into rats, hamsters and gerbils.
OWS people-nothing but themselves. Its very interesting on how these thing correlate.
More liberals go to lilith concerts than any other group.
