Sad. This has been nothing more than another case of zero tolerence going to extremes over common sense judgement. Reactions such as those that occurred at this school can ruin kids' faith in adulthood.

So many penalties and so little understanding...

Verbage is extremely important Huff...your leader caption indicates that this was a laboratory exeriment, which it was not...stop the casual spin, just report the facts...

Actually, it intimates nothing of the sort. It describes an 'explosion at Florida school'

It was an explosion, if you really want to stretch the meaning of explosion, but then, so's a fart.

Not the header associated with the article, the one on the main page that sends you to the article - I was exactly described as a lab experiment...

omg at 12 I had my on chemistry set and microscope......many a time in the back yard and garage did things go wrong! no one hurt, no property damaged. I witness the same thing in high school chemistry classes Jail? Police? State's Attorney? felony charges? life time record? what have we wrought?

"Kiera told Bartow police she was doing a science experiment,"

Exactly what it looked like to moi, good for her. Hope this doesn't stop her.

"but science teachers said they had no knowledge of an experiment."

Irrelevant. Since it was before school started the fact of it doesn't surprise me, or dauhhh, which is perhaps more apt. Seems the school to prison program has limits after all, late blooming, as they in this case were. And doubtless, for those caught in it, only sometimes. So in that since she's lucky, too.

Ugly truth isn't it?

Well, you have to understand that most of the people trying to make that point, that you need a science teacher in order to conduct a science experiment, have no concept of what science is....

I hope this young lady continues to maintain her good grades, attains higher education/travels/builds her life outside of the U.S., and becomes an asset to a country where anti-intellectualism does not exist, and where creativity is nurtured, not criminalized.

Once my BBF and I mixed ammonia and bleach in her garage...WHOA did we make a big mistake and got in trouble...:O| We were lucky the garage door was open so we could run out when it started to explode.

EXACTLY. remember a friend and I brewing something up with a home chemistry set. we made a pretty astonishing blue foam that blew out of the tube...and no one arrested us, no one claimed we were trying to do some terrorist act. dont know why this young lady chose school grounds to do this, maybe her one bad choice in the matter but...jiminy cricket we have so many worse things to worry about with school kids! if she were some ne'er do well that got the recipe off the internet...a slightly higher punishment since they probably wanted to create mayhem. this girl? don't think so. she has paid over and again any price for her bad judgement

I made nitro glycerin in high school took it home and promptly blew a big hole in my dads barn. I spent the entire summer rebuilding the barn with my own money($1200). I also had to baby the horses for a month to get them over my dads imagined ptsd. I learned a hell of alot more from that experiance than I would have by being kicked out of school and doing some lame diversion program. Brings back memories of the giant home made rockets.

This is not a partisan issue. But seeing as you brought it up, the felony law they tried to charge her under was enacted by a Democratic administration from legislation drawn up under a Republican administration FL 790.161

I'm surprised she wasn't charged as a domestic terrorist.meanwhile all the gun nuts are walking around with fully loaded semi-automatic firearms just hoping for a chance to start shooting.

you live in a fantasy world. stay inside your home, it is very dangerous out here, you might step on an ied. christene was a true story and somewhere out there is a car with a full tank of gas just stalking you, waiting to run you down.

We used to take large quantities of zinc and HCL and make balloons full of the resulting gas. They were loud. Also got a hold of some chunks of sodium and used to throw them in the pond. That was pretty fun too.

I guess I'd be a terrorist now.

Acetylene and punch-card chads... or acetylene in a bin-liner with a spark plug and a battery/coil ;) Sounds like a big bomb going off with nothing more than a big ball of flame.

Those little camping gaz cylinders and a detonator give a similar result ;)

The resulting explosion blew the cap off a bottle? How loud was that pop? That is not an explosion it is the letting off gas. I sure hope no one farts loudly. That could be a jail sentence.
