I lived in Europe for 10 years and had to have my passport with me at all times to prove who I was. If I was asked to present it, I was never offended. I was the foreigner and the country I was in had the right to make me prove who I was. Same applies in this country. If you can't document yourself, it's time to go back to wherever you came from.

I have ID. I have alot of ID. But I don't have "papers" or carry a passport. I take pride in the fact I do not have to. I live in the United States, the land of Freedom. 10 years in Europe.!!!!! Does that mean you were taking work away from a Europian.? They should have sent you packing. I am sure you were not on a path to citizanship in one of the counties.

If the Latin advocates are so concerned about their citizen's rights to practice medicine in the US, perhaps they should make a deal with the US like they did for voting in Mexican elections.
They could open, fund and regulate "foreign citizens only" hospitals where Latin expatriates could go to be treated by the same standards and methods as the Old Country. Since they would not be treating any citizens, the states would not need to worry about licencing their doctors.

My dear bigit. Most of the foreign doctors in this country are NOT "Mexican". This law is aimed at the other hate target in this country. You are truly "Ugly american" Why don't you get lost. Also, these doctors did pass tests and become licensed to practice in the US. Most of them were educated in the US. If Doctors from a foriegn country were not allowed to treat you, I wish you luck at finding enough American born and raised doctors to take care of everyone.

This law is aimed at those who are here illegally, no matter what country they originate from. Frankly, I'm glad someone is doing something about these criminals. There is nothing "ugly American" about expecting our government to enforce the law. There are legal and proper ways for foreign doctors to practice in the US. The ones complying are not the one being targeted.
08:39 AM on 05/19/2013
Illegal Mexican doctors take advantage of the migrant workers all the time, most are dentists.

Seems to make sense. If have to present my *Drivers License* when asked to prove I passed the a driving test. This should apply to physicians that can write a prescription for medication or in some cases perform surgery on another human being. Even veterinarian has to have a license to practice in most states.

Maybe this will protect hapless, innocent victims of so many of these frauds performing lipo-suctions in basements, kidney transplants without anesthesia and abortions in the back of mini-vans...ALL of these atrocities and MANY, MANY more happen each year at the hands of 3rd World "doctors" from Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. In my small midwestern community alone, children have died after having had surgeries performed by savages who sneaked into the US, hung a shingle outside their "office" and then fled from town when the child is thrown dead into the garbage can behind their Mercedes-Benz.

We had a case here a couple of years ago where people running a Hispanic business were found out to be flying South American doctors into the country to illegally perform breast implants and other cosmetic surgeries on mostly women from Latin and South America. They would get several women at a time, collect the money from them and the surgeries were performed in a back room of the business. One woman got an infection from butt implants and went into a coma, that is how they found out what was going on. It had been going on for years before they were caught.

Check their papers, if they're here illegally, lock them up, mandatory 1 year for first offense, confienscate every thing they own, and when they get out of jail deport them, if they come back a mandatory 7 years in jail.
08:34 AM on 05/19/2013
Why spend all that money keeping them in jail. Deport them and their illegal family members immediately. They are illegals, they are breaking the law by being here. They have no rights.
09:50 AM on 05/19/2013
"Confiscate every thing (sic) they own"? Should they get the sales tax back on the things they bought here with their fancy imported currency? And should their assets, if they have any, in other countries also be confiscated?

What is wrong with anyone being asked to see their documentation? Are they afraid of something? If you are legally here this should not be a problem at all for you. The ones that are afraid are the ones that are not here illegally. simple as that. I commend Alabama for doing something many states don't have the guts to do. I commend Alabama for caring about the citizens of their state more than the federal government cares for them. Alabama: Be proud of who you are - other states should follow your lead. If the federal government won't protect us then we need to start protecting ourselves.
09:52 AM on 05/19/2013
It's not about caring about citizens, it's about making life difficult for citizen and non-citizen alike!
07:38 AM on 05/19/2013
The fed controls illegal and legal immigration but each state issues and controls medical, and legal licenses to practice in the individual state. Alabama has the right and the power to issue, revoke or not issue a license to practice medicine on any foundation other than those specifically prohibited by law. I do not believe the Democrats nor the liberal federal courts have gone so far as to force a state to issue a medical license to practice even if the applicant is an illegal immigrant. Though, I am positive some liberal federal judge will find some law that he or she can interprut to force the state to give up their power and right as concerns the issuance of a license.

The fed and the courts will rely upon immigration control but if you are open minded, you will realize this is not immigration control because the illegal can move out of the state yet stay in the US. Then I guess the liberal court will find that it is too much of a hardship on the illegal to force a move out of the state or find a job.

Under federal law, unauthorized aliens may not hold ANY kind of professional licence. That's why the DREAMer-lawyer wannabe's got told told "NO!" in both California and Florida. No judge or executive order is going to be able to change that.
Professional licence in any field is a privilege, not a right.

Hmmm "taz" (an interesting appellation) ... the war over federalism largely ended with the Civil War... which last time I checked, the South lost. While under the 10th Amendment's residual powers, states can regulate for the "health, safety, welfare and morals " of their respective citizens, they cannot nullify federal legislative schemes or encroach upon the same. This is not a matter of "liberal" or "conservative"... it is a concept set down in the summer of 1987 when your beloved founding fathers decided that a "strong and powerful" federal government was essential if the nation was to survive... your patron saint, John C. Calhoun lost his fight for nullification...it appears of late several republican state legislatures need to be reminded of history...

Hmmm lawcenterone. I have never heard of any type of federal professional license for medical types, only state licences. You are correct, THIS is not a liberal or conservative issue but when the courts get involved, it comes such. Just watch the posts on this site.

Actually, minus the extra form to fill out they do. Medical schools in the US also require birth certificates or proper visa because they don't have to accept anyone.

Not all states are checking for licenses though. Anyone can hang a shingle and call themselves a doctor--but how many people actually check to see if the license is real? Especially if the "doctor" is playing doctor to other illegals.

The % of illegal immigrants with the requisite IQ to become a medical doctor has to be exceedingly small.

Your point is not relevant.  Foreign students can obtain an MD degree, or even an OD degree and legally practice as an intern in hospitals and clinics, and when they overstay their visa, or are no longer a student, they enter illegal status. However, hospitals and clinics would be vastly understaffed if they checked on the visa status of their interns.  However, these interns cannot obtain a license for private practice, so long as they have not obtained citizenship  or legal residentcy.  What a shame that we would insist our emergency rooms should deport vast numbers of degreed, competent and dedicated medical personnel.  We must insist the FEDERAL immigration changes give a path to citizenship for valuable medical, scientific, and engineering personnel to retain these valuable assets to our country!! 8)

If the state licencing board (any state) checks for any reason, they will yank their licence if they overstay their visa. Unauthorized aliens are prohibited by federal laws from holding professional licence. If they are here illegally to begin with (AKA DREAMer's), they won't be in any medical school or program because the competition for such slots is fierce.
As for a path to citizenship, they need to get legal first and so far that is not happening.
08:36 AM on 05/19/2013
There IS a path to legalization yet they CHOOSE not to follow it. We have plenty of legal Americans that would love the jobs send them packing .
05:56 AM on 05/19/2013
they should this will help determine who is legal and illegal in this country .but ofcoarse our government wants them here anyway

I guess this Georgia law is another part of the much heralded Republican outreach to Latino voters. With the demographic shifts that are taking place, right wingers are shooting themselves in the foot. It seems that almost every day there is another report of GOP malice toward the Latino community. The tea partiers scream about "taking back their country". Millions of young latinos who are in their formative stages, described by an author of a Heritage study foundation on immigration reform as genetically and intellectually inferior, see all too clearly what is going on. The GOP is pushing the Latino community, which is not monolithic, and especailly young Latinos, permanently into the Democratic party (which is fine with me). But as the Latino population reaches 30% of the population by the mid 2040s, the GOP might want think twice about thier current attitudes and policies.

Joaquin, I have to go vote with an R or a D by my name in the state I live in, which I call that party controlled, but the way I feel about this is, we need more doctors in this country and these people in this article feel the need then so be it, I dont give a hang where they come from.

Actually, the Republicans who are trying to give amnesty to the illegals are shooting themselves in the foot. It doesn't matter who (democrats or Republicans) is for or against illegal immigration or who is for or against amnesty. The reality is that the vast majority of ILLEGAL aliens are criminals and/or never finished high school (in any country). The combination of their criminal history and their lack of education makes them, by definition, democrat voters -- because they are literally dependent on government handouts for food, shelter, and healthcare. Moreover, the immediate family members of the criminals and the uneducated vote democrat, too, because they want the free benefits for their "undesirable" family members (the "good" people in the family don't want to feed and clothe the bums in their own family, they prefer that the mostly white taxpayers pay to support their poor family members). You only need look at how black people vote -- over 90% democrat -- as black people have a disproportional number of criminals and dropouts in their ranks, and the odds are if you are black, that either you or an immediate family member (parent, child, or sibling) fits the definition of convicted criminal or dropout, and is thus dependent on government for their support.
