Living in Luna County NM (butts up against Palomas) for most of my life we crossed over frequently for dentists, pharmacies, lunch at Tillie's Pink Store and family events with my former in-laws not to mention the maranitos at the panderia. On more than one occasion we sere stopped by local Palomas police and spent time waiting while my father-in-law would discuss and eventually pay for us to go on. Once while there we saw another American couple pulled from their car by local citizens and robbed - right there on the street in broad daylight with people everywhere. We stopped driving across after our car was searched by police and a box of CDs and a camera were confiscated. I can safely say that none of my money will be spent there again and I recommend everyone stay out of Mexico & keep their money out as well.

I have been to Mexico many times and I am a born USA patriot, every policia I have ever met while there were corupt and wanting US dollars, your 180 visa run out if you stay to long, guess wha t?you have to bribe to get a visa to come home, where as in the US we let them get whatever they please and cost the taxpayers not the illegals. The US has really gone to hell and anyone that has any idea at all would know that the cartels own and grow all the good pot in the states, who would want to smuggle there s#%&t pot back in the states anyway.I agree with the poster who said no one should be in jail or prison over pot,but its nothing but a money game for the corrupt and goverments to play and make money off of a weed that grows everywhere and is legal in certain states in the US and go to prison in other states in the US. Whats that say about the USA? Go to prison in my state but next door state grow what you want for medical or personal use. What is this world coming to?

Just another great reason to blow Mexico off the map. Pave the entire country and give it to Exxon/Mobil.
09:47 PM on 05/29/2013
You are so damm stupid!!! There are a lot good people there. It's no their fault that there is a lot of corruption in mexican authorities. Mexican people are victims too of police, goverment, military, and cartels.

They are also the victims of horrible economic equality & no means of upward mobility, hence the corruption & defection.

I feel sad and sorry about the problems of this nice family, but in my country the corruption has deep roots; as Jose Lopez Portillo, one of the past president said: " la corrupcion somos todos", meaning that all of us are corrupts, this asseveration is not totally true but fits about a 98% of our politicians who manage the country. The actual president repeat the same methods done in the last 7 decades, continuing with the leaderships of the "rolleros" (I have not found a suitable term in English for this Mexican word). Mexico is a lovely country, but this kind of corruption has made us a very pauperized people with the number 1 millionaire in the world.

i think it may help the corruption of a people if Mexico and all of latin american countries made English their official language---then the people will understand what it means to be a honest person with character - like an American--soon the races will see the light of American excellence---and the world will be a better place--HO
09:55 PM on 05/29/2013
I don't think to speak another language would help at all. You would need to be from that country to understand that the corruption is out of limits. People that lives there has not justice at all. I'm glad about this is making international news. It may help to stop a little the corruption of Mexico. By the way to speak a language doesn't make you honest, and have seen some dishonest people in goverment here too. Let's star with Joe Arpaio, Gen Petreyes, Russell Pierce, etc., etc.

Why doesnt our whimp of a President do something to show some nads instead of letting the mexicans and the chimese walk all over us
09:11 PM on 05/29/2013
Maybe you should grow some nads and stop buying things made in China and try to find non-Mexicans to do the jobs Mexicans do. Yeah good luck with that. Don't blame everything Obama that every Repub prez has been just as guilty of.

It almost sounds as if Mexicans are "profiling" American tourists. I'm glad the US doesn't do those kind of things to people who look un-American.

I cannot believe how harsh these posts are on Mexico. After Canada and China, Mexico, is our third largest trading partner and is projected to take China's place as second. The U.S. now exports less goods to Mexico than they import to us. So we are intertwined, not only relative to the use and consumption of goods, but also as it relates to the treatment of our respective fellow citizens, be it Mexicans in the U. S. or Americans South of the Border. So I say cool it and let Mexico's jurisprudence system take its course!!!!

Everyone that says the mother was framed in mexico is problably right, but people here is the usa have been framed from lying police officers, lying prosecutors and corrupt judges, the only difference here is that there is more money in the usa and the usa keeps it more clean that is all.
after saying that I do feel for this lady, but we have to wait and see if she is released just like here we have to wait years for a trial and if you don't have money to bail out guess what you are staying in jail, even if you are innocent, so in fact you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent
07:17 PM on 05/29/2013
I had heard that they were in Mexico for a friends wedding now its a funeral... (they need to get their story straight) and I never heard of any drug dealer admitting he was guilty, if there were security cameras how come no one knows how the package got there in the first place? There seems to be more to this story than we are being told... I also wonder what this woman does for a living? How does she support her 7 children? Does she have a real job? If she does not... I would be more suspicious, I guess we have to get all the fact before claiming she is guilty or innocent! I can tell you that Mexican Drug dealers do use women, old men, old ladies, etc. to smuggle drugs all the time, so there is nothing unusual about this story except that someone got caught.
11:39 PM on 05/29/2013
I find it a bit strange that they took a bus rather than driving. Yes, it could be somebody else's package but then again maybe they thought it was easier to smuggle on a bus than in person and if caught claim they did not know it was there. Good point about woman and children commonly used as mules.

While Mexico does have notoriously corrupt police and government officials, poverty without safety nets, a drug war etc. It also has a large middle class. Not everyone in the country is attempting to sneak into the U.S. or selling Chicklets on street corners. Mexico City is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. I have worked and traveled throughout central Mexico for the last 20 years as well as visiting the typical tourist areas numerous times.
People can immigrate legally from Mexico to the U.S, as was probably the case with Mrs. Maldonaro, or obtain Permanent Resident status.
This is going to cost Mexican tourism millions of $. This is another stain that the country does not need.

Who would trust the Mexican police about anything? This is an outrage. Send in seal Team 6 !

I don't know why any American would want to visit Mexico. I heard they do this type of stuff all the time to get money out of Americans. Even reporters are asked for money or they can be arrested on bogus charges. Americans need to be made aware of the dangers of visiting down there.

That was my first thought, why take a bus, are they that poor? Can you imagine how long it would take a bus to get through immigration....
The bus makes me think they were smuggling.
