I agree with this ad. I think it is good. I live in the Detroit area where there are hundreds of thousands of parents who are super undereducated and have not even basic skills...

They truly do not know anything about eating healthy very much. And it results in a lot of obese kids. With such a population this would be a highly beneficial ad (and would cost the government and taxpayers less on payments for medical issues down the road by averting poor eating choices).

I think the key word you used is educated. I feel we need to be educating about healthy eating. Starting in elementary school. It should be part of a school curriculum.

There is nothing wrong with ads that try to teach people to adopt good eating habits. Some parents don't make good choices when it comes to the food and drinks they serve their children. An ad like this could make them think and possibly change they way they feed their children.

Hey government, stop approving laws that allow GMO as food! The American government is the cause of obesity! Healthy food is now called organic and is expensive as hell while fake food is easy to obtain.

GMO has nothing to do with Obesity. GMO is digested EXACTLY like non GMO food.

I don't agree with the government getting involved here, but they did the right thing by not using a child who's actually fat.

At first glance, it appears that this innocent, fat, bi-racial child is snorting cocaine.

Just another example where the government thinks they can do any damn thing they want.

All these Califonian ex-politicians are coming into Arizona and screwing up the entire state.

If they kept both pictures together for the implication of what they mean that would be one thing, but I don't know.... Having just the shopped one alone is a bit strange, even with the inference that it's a spoof of some kind with the sugar packet with the straw in it. Still I think someone who is trying to become socially-media relevant is over reacting a bit here.

There's so much talk about obesity but nobody talks about the causes. One being the cost of "healthy" food is more than junk food. Make healthy food affordable for people on a tight budget.
Also a factor are the chemicals in our food, cosmetics, & cleaning products. Check your shampoo, for example. Anything that starts with "Ethyl, Methyl, Butyl or Propyl" can cause obesity, breast cancer & other things. High fructose corn syrup causes weight gain, but it's cheap to use.

My husband had the idea that the government should open stores in urban areas and that would be the only place that food stamps could be use. Stock the stores with healthy, unprocessed foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, no Red Bull or Fried Pork Rinds. The benefits would be twofold: (1) offer good, fresh, affordable food in urban areas where grocery options are lacking; (2) cut down on waste and fraud, by having only one place accept the cards.

Fat kids and also skinny ones were ridiculed and picked on when I was growing up. Now they are protected by law and are becoming the foster child of the American landscape. Our society is being turned upside down thanks to liberals.
12:51 AM on 06/07/2013
I will proudly declare myself liberal and turn society upside down if it means that no kid is ever bullied again, for any reason.

I'm not even sure what you mean by "becoming the foster child of the American landscape," but I'm 100% certain that the American landscape will not be harmed one iota if we stop allowing people to ridicule, and pick on others because they get some sadistic pleasure out of it. Angry souled people like yourself may cry that it makes us "weak," or "sissies," but I prefer the approach of that long haired liberal hippie Jesus, when he advised us to love our neighbors as ourselves - not torment them endlessly, or beat the crap out of them because we don't like some inconsequential part of their being.
02:01 AM on 06/07/2013
So you're saying fat kids & skinny kids shouldn't be protected? The conservatives want to ridicule & pick on them?
12:12 PM on 06/07/2013
That's what conservatives do... call other people names and ridicule them... you know Like Limbaugh calling a woman testifying about women's health care and birth control a "w.h.o.r.e" - labeling and objectifying people is how conservatives think and communicate with each other.

If they could.. they'd use the "N" word when referring to non-white people.

Aside from the bad photoshop, my biggest issue with this campaign is the extreme message involved. True, children really should be steered away from soda and sports drinks... but JUICE. How many other moms & dads out there have had their pediatrician RECOMMEND juice? I know both of my daughter's have for one simple reason... if a toddler/ young child drinks only water & milk, they risk severe consitpation wich can cause bowel obstruction and discourage potty training because it hurts to go potty. First 5's biggest problem (as a mother in California who has been through their programs when we needed MediCal and WIC) is that they have bad information that they are passing on. I can't recall how many of my mandatory "classes" involved me smiling & nodding until I got my checks and then doing what my pediatrician recommended instead. You want to really combat childhood obesity, start working with practicing pediatricians and CHILD nutrition specialists and start teaching parents how to more effectively budget and introduce good choices, while better gauging how to allow treats. Eliminating anything with sugar completely will not solve the problem... it will only create guilty parents with uneducated (nutritionally) children.
