Gods and sane Republicans aren't real.

This is why we need to stay out of the Middle East and let oppressive dictators keep the sky worshipping neanderthals in line.

Seriously, it's time.

That doesn't work so well. We need to ensure that the bulk of the Middle Easterners are able to keep their skyfairyist contingent under control through more effective education.

This is what comes of the US not intervening and supporting/arming the mainstream Syrian sunni rebels, enabling them to topple Assad and end the conflict.
Now the sunni islamist extremists are moving in from other sunni Arab countries, and starting to infect the Syrian insurgency as they (or specifically as Zarqawi's AQI) tried to do in Iraq's Anbar province a decade ago. The rebels will become increasingly radicalized, and our best interest is that the Syrian war goes on forever, dragging the shiites and sunnis into a permanent ethnic slaughter that consumes both foreign sunni islamists and shiite hezbollah forces sponsored by Iran. This will result in horrifying misery for the Syrian people, but perhaps draws Al Qaeda type sunni jihadists further into a conflict with Iran.

But if you want them to kill each other, wouldn't you want to them to have plenty of weapons?

The only thing that can stop a bad rebel with a gun is a good rebel with a gun.
07:27 AM on 06/11/2013
Yes, let's keep arming the rebels with weaponry.

So now the rebels are the bad guys, and the death toll just doubled since yesterday? Are we under new management?

Its complicated. Its not a fight between the good guys and bad guys. Its a fight between all of the minorities of the country, Alawites, Shia, Christian, Jewish, Sufi, etc, and the majority Sunnis and all the major players are religious conservatives groups not wanting to have to compromise on anything. Remember when we were sided with Al Qaeda when the Ruskies invaded Afghanistan, and Al Qaeda used that training and money to create opium fields, arm and train themselves on how to use those arms, ultimately resulting in two crashed towers? Remember when we picked Saddam as our pal even though he gassed tens of thousands of Kurds? It might be in our best interest to understand the complexities of the region and carefully choose our level of involvement lest we seal our own fate by arming and befriending the terrorists.

They are fighting a civil war but take time out to murder a teenager for blasphemy? How do you take such people's agenda seriously?

I meant seriously enough to back them. They are not the only group rebelling. My memory is long enough to remember us backing the Taliban. It was a bad idea then. It is a bad idea now.
07:27 AM on 06/11/2013
Well it seems all the comments I wanted to make have already been said. So yes, let's leave the middle east to itself. I think I'm getting more Libertarian every day. Get out-come home-leave them alone. They'll be better for it. And so will we.

Not really. he would just like us to snuggle a bit more. We've been in bed with them long before Syria.

A child was killed for what? A tongue in cheek remark, for being rather cocky? He was killed in front of his parents and a large crowd.....Who may they have been? Friends..probably, neighbors maybe and the normal citizens of Aleppo-definitely. ....Yet no one protested, no one tried to interfere to save a 15 year old kid...the question is why?
06:51 AM on 06/11/2013
Ah, the guys that all want us to support and give aid and weapons
Great idea

Not $1
Not 1 blanket
Not 1 piece of bread
Not 1 rifle
Not 1 bombing run
Not 1 US Citizen's life
