Oh....so that's what happens when people get up, get out and demonstrate.

It's nice to see a govt afraid of its citizens and not the other way around.

Peoples' power!

When will Americans ever have the courage to do something like this? They can't because the ever-ready subjugating machinery called the police force, will be ready to deal ruthlessly with any such dissent.

Democracy only exists in name in America.

In name and, oh, in that time of year when you can go vote. But other than the voting part totally!

"Voting" between a few lousy choices and having absolutely no say what they do once they're elected is hardly "democracy", it's a dog and pony show.

The police tried to quell these people also, but it did not stop them, and that is what we need to do.

"FIFA President Sepp Blatter urged protesters to stop linking their anger against the government to the Confederations Cup. The cost of building stadiums for the FIFA tournaments has been a regular complaint at marches.

In an interview with Brazil's Globo TV network, Blatter said he could "understand that people are not happy, but they should not use football to make their demands heard."

"We did not impose the World Cup on Brazil," he said"

And yet it is FIFA that set the regulations requiring these new and remodeled stadiums, that demanded other costs. Stadiums that in many places will be white elephants like they are in South Africa. Simply wiping his hands and pretending he had nothing to do with the problem is a lie.

I lived in a huge tourism area for years. The elite from Brazil are a major visitor there. I have went over this with several Brazilians and they know what I'm referring to when bringing it up. These rich Brazilians are paid mightily working in the industries that work for the gov't, and they have huge sums of money. They are arrogant. They are pushy. They are rude. And I feel sorrow for the millions in Brazil who suffer their greed and poor gov't services, despite numerous taxes. The elite of Brazil, are no different than the elite of the USA who think they are more important than the 'common man' who drives a bus, is a teller at a bank, or a waiter.

Sounds like they have their own Republican Congress who protect the 1% there with obstructionism, huh?

I still can't for the life of me understand why the Olympic Committee chose Brazil as the next city to host the Olympics. The Brazilian peoples are great but the Brazilian infrastructure is atrocious .And then you have the Brazilian government who cut taxes low for the Rich and raise them on the poor and forces millions of peoples to live in those ghetto township while the rich live on top of the hill side eating and living high on the hog. There is more to life than pretty beaches .

The only other candidates were Chicago(whose plan was not the best), Tokyo(again not the best) and Madrid(probably the best bid of all, but Europe held the last Olympics(and for a somewhat small country held the Olympics around 2 decades ago). It already having the world cup did not hurt at all

Actually Spain is doing terrible right now, 50% of the population is unemployed the young have no jobs and most are leaving the country to find some. And on top of that believe it or not the people their although friendly to their own are actually very racist.

The olympics are becoming a joke just like World Fairs did years ago. Each city spends billions more to outdo the previous extravaganza. The athletics are taking a back seat to the "show". People are getting sick of the excess.

Many experts are saying the same thing. I have read several articles in that regard. They are quite concerned about security.
06:32 PM on 06/19/2013
They could start to make all the churches to pay taxes as everyone else. That would surely help. Also, they could reduce the enormous privileges the representatives of the States and of the Cities have in Brazil, from cars, gas, air fares at their disposal - that many use mostly for private and not office purposes -, to bonuses for housing, not to speak about the astronomical salaries they have. The transport fare hikes are not the only problem...

It's not about the 20 cents hike. The protests are about rampant government corruption and the lack good hospitals, doctors and schools while the government is speeding an enormous amount of money in the World Cup. The people finally woke up!

Unusual for Brazileans to do this. Very. Indeed. But we don't know that, right?

We probably think this is everyday affair in Brazil.

How in the world they thought they could spend sooooo much money in an Olympics and abandoned the rest?

There is no money they say -until it shows up- for the things the top 1% cares about.

Same thing. Same world.

yes, the tyrannical obstructionism causing major roadblocks to the USA's recovery from the major economic collapse that ended Bush's tenure must end - vote out the congressman in Republican Do Nothing Party! President Obama has repeatedly tried to invest in social programs that the Brazilians are demanding, but like in Brazil, the conservatives are protecting the 1%'s interest. IT MUST STOP!

We americans should take this as a lesson. If we all marched in the streets, maybe some of these do nothing obstructive congressmen might get off their arses and do something constructive.
06:43 PM on 06/19/2013
The congressman who obstruct government and social functions have no idea how bad real well organized obstruction can be. With our infrastructure in shambles due to years of underfunding and ignorance, it would not take much to bring the whole shebang to a standstill..they probably know this, hence the constant militarization of our police forces. The template comes right out of South America.....armed troops on the streets to "keep order" of course the "order" they are keeping is one in which a small number of families have all the priviledges and wealth created by the working class. Now that the South Americans are getting away from this template, the Americans are picking it up. I remember in the military we only went off base in our dress uniforms....we never ever walked the street in BDU's....and how we thought the troops in South and Central America looked liked thugs on the street, fully armed and in battle gear. Then after 9/11 at the veterans hospital you see corpsman wearing camo scrubs. Kind of weird and scary.
