Right I want to know names of 5 more religious nuts. What I really want is a super size can of fundy begone spray.

If you didn't want to know the evangelicals then why did you click on the link?
07:41 PM on 07/04/2013
With the amount of hate "preached" in these comments towards evangelicals I am positive you will not persuade them to change their minds- only polarize more. Let's classy up the comments, eh?

Agreed, but please understand that what you're seeing are sincere, heart-felt reactions to decades of hate, bigotry, self-serving hypocrisy, and closed-minded anti-scientific gobbledygook on the part of the most visible and vocal Pharisees who have dominated American Christianity.

Do intelligent, honest, kind, loving Christians exist? Certainly! I volunteer with many of them in soup kitchens and aid organizations. But, unfortunately, they have not been the face of Christianity shown to America over the last century.

There are evangelicals who use their faith in order to strike out against those who believe or act in ways that are different from that of the evangelicals in question. There are also, of course, evangelicals who do their best to live in accord with their beliefs and who try to treat others as Jesus would have.

not because she qualified that to herself, for herself but because she saw others that were...

Hey observing and reacting to reality. That's not something the Taliban usually do. I guess she deserves only a medium-strength Bronx cheer for that.

"Kevin Palau
The son of Luis Palau, one of the Americas' world's best-known evangelists, Kevin Palau is leading a wave of innovation among evangelicals keen on finding new and attractive ways to bring the gospel forward in a culture that is increasingly pluralistic, secular, and "post-modern"-- "

in other words, he's keen on creating a new convenient theology....so what? apologetics is just another word for being pertinacious in ones emotional agenda...nothing exceptional about that.

"As more evangelicals steer clear of culture wars and venture into the "gap" of which Jonathan Merritt speaks, or the radical middle as some prefer to call it, will progressive non-evangelicals reciprocate?"

Two words. Hell no.

More words. Reciprocate to policies based upon some bizarre divine guidance granted by a 2,000 year old book of mythology? I repeat. Hell no.

I once chased a mugger away in Trenton NJ. I knew he was sizing me up to do something or other. I began preaching loudly and attempting to convert him. He could not get away from me fast enough. I do not attribute the happy outcome to Jesus.

It is interesting that some of them come from or have spent time in the least Christian area of the US -- the northwest; Oregon, Washington state, for example. Metzger studied in a seminary in Portland, Oregon; Palau family lives in Portland; Henderson is Seattle, Washington-based; and Kriz involves himself in secular Reed College. I now the University of Portland (a Catholic university) does great things in Portland, too.

6 Evangelicals You Don't Know... But Might Want To............ researching evangelicals' negative reputation and modeling a more credible way to be Christian in an increasingly diverse and skeptical culture.

Skeptical??

It's only rational to be skeptical about ANY religious group because the RELIGIOUS ARE NOT A RATIONAL PEOPLE....anyone that thinks there is a MAGICAL GUY somewhere doing their bidding if they pray hard and long enough is INSANE...the problem with dealing with this problem is that 95% of the people on the planet are TECHNICALLY INSANE AND DON'T KNOW IT....they have no one to check with except each other.....it's like people in an asylum seriously discussing the pros and cons of aliens they've met.

Question- For everyone who posted a comment not agreeing with this article, if you are so against evangelicals and religion in general, why do you even waste your time reading about it?

We are gregarious and political. We are having a conversation. We want to hear from everybody. That is what political message boards are for. Is that not why YOU came here?
11:24 AM on 07/04/2013
No, I follow one of these guys and saw he was mentioned in this article. I just stumbled upon the comments. With all due respect, it looked more like complaining and bashing than conversation. But I get it, that is what makes social media and this country great, we get to express ourselves. I guess my point is why spend time being negative when we could do something positive.

Can't answer your question for others, but as someone whose legal right to marry was forcibly removed 4 years ago, largely through the efforts of evangelicals, and was only restored last Friday, I can answer you for myself:
I don't care for rattlesnakes. But I'm very interested in learning about where they hide, when they are likely to strike, and how to keep them from biting me again.

Hmm, first thing I learned about snakes groups growing up is that most snakes are not only harmless, but quite beneficial to have around. In spite of that, plenty of shrill people insist, against all reason, to lump all the brown snakes, garter snakes, et al with rattle snakes, copperheads, water moccasins. Now, all that Prop 8 talk might have relevance vis-a-vis hierarchical churches like the Catholics or Mormons (even then reasonable folk know that individual members need not necessarily share the views of a hierarchy), but there is no group called "The Evangelicals" that is remotely analogous--American evangelicalism is a spectrum, only loosely a movement, and certainly not any sort binding commitment. Frankly, the individualistic, anti-hierarchical character is one of the things I like. It means that I can treat the sort of folks who sign on to things like Prop 8 as somewhat annoying but ultimately irrelevant to my spiritual life.

f&f.

Whether new, or old, the Evangelicals have created their own reputations.

None of us, out in the 'real world', invited them in to restrict our basic human rights.

They do hide. And they do sneaky things.

They need to know that we are all 'onto' them, and won't let them get away with any of their repression in "here and now", nor in the future.

B.S. Utter B.S.

They're evangelicals. Eventually, they'll tell you that while they don't HATE gay people (and some of their best friends are gay, mind you), STILL the bible does say...... blah blah blah.

And while they'll tell you that women have an important role to play in the life of the "church", the bible does say..... blah blah blah.

Sorry, I've been burned enough by "new evangelicals" to no that you can change the cover of the book but inside, it's still the same book.

I'm not going to get excited about any of these people until I see them openly lobbying for women's rights to contraceptives and children's rights to not be subjected to corporal punishment and other forms of religiously motivated child maltreatment. Until the, they are more of the same in a different wrapper!
