Have you soda drinkers ever read the label on your sodas? They are nothing but chemicals you are putting into your bodies.

Fail to establish the physical connection between diet soda and fat people. Im fat. I dont eat sugary foods at all and my diet soda intake varies from none one month to a case the next. Simple fact is fat people just use diet soda more as to cut back on that whopping 300 plus calories per serving.

It's almost like there's a vendetta against everything but water these days. First regular soda was bad so people switched to diet and juice. Then juice became bad. Now diet soda is bad. Cofee is bad. Beer is bad. Wine is bad. I even hear "health" people try to argue that water re-hydrates you better than sports drinks. Which scientifically is impossible. Of course consuming anything in excess is bad but people need to get over it. Your lifestyle has only a portion to do with how long and well you live. Your genetics and family history have more to do with it than anything. Healthy people do not necessarily live longer or better. Everyone's body is different. If we werent than everyone over a certain weight would have diabetes and things of that nature. There are overweight people with perfect blood pressure and cholesterol. The article itself says there is so much they dont know, yet suggested you cut out the drink despite an overwhelming lack of knowledge. There is no one way to live a healthy life. Even drinking water in excess can kill you. Dont live in fear and enjoy life. It's not the destination, its how much you enjoyed getting there that matters.

sonofbaldo, how right you are! First it was too much calorie intake, then fat intake, then cholesterol intake, and back to too calorie intake. It sometimes sounds like overpaid people trying to justify their jobs.

i think in moderation is the key. also a diabetic can not drink regular sugar drinks. the weight gain is not just what the peoplle eat. if one goes to the grocery store you read the labels, everything has sugar and high fructose content. when i am reading this article some freaking advertisement comes on about a pill or solution to bust your body fat. go to the store now and get my diet soda. lol

If we worried about everything that was bad for us, then we'd never eat/drink anything. Take eggs for example, some weeks they're good for us, other weeks they are not. It has gotten to the point I have to read the news every morning before making my omelet.

When i was a kid every day it was all about eating your fruit. An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Now fruit is bad. It's high in this, and high in that and oh the chemicals they put on everything! bla bla bla

Carrots are great for your eyes. Eat lots of carrots. Tons of carrots later i still wear contacts.

A fe!w years ago, I decided to give up sugary soda and started drinking diet soda instead; about 2 cans/day. Not too long after that I went to the doctor with severe itching. I would scratch and scratch, but got no relief. The Dr. asked if I was drinking diet soda. I told her I was. She lectured me on the negative effects of artificial sweeteners and had me get my liver enzymes checked. My AST and ALT were sky high! I was headed for the transplant list. By severely restricting my "simple sugar" intake and taking milk thistle, I got my levels back to normal. See the You Tube video, "Sweet Misery" on the evils of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners. Now I use Xylitol. It's not calorie free (has about 60% of sugar's calories )but it tastes like sugar and can be used as you would use sugar.

Xylitol is horrible for you too. It's poison just like everything else. Xylitol can actually kill a dog. That's why it's a big deal to never let your dog get it's mouth on sugar free gum cause the xylitol in the gun can kill the dog. So...you're still consuming poison that's "killing" you

Any carbonated drinks are not really good to our body. So, water is still the best and only drink that is very safe for our body. To keep the water interesting, you can add lemon on it to give slight kick.

Putting lemon in the water erodes the enamel on your teeth by making the water acidic.

I am a huge Diet Coke drinker and the healthiest person I know. This article is a bunch of hogwash. People want to negate everything when there is no cause-and-effect established from any of these studies. If people studied me they could conclude that my low blood pressure and low cholesterol was caused by my Diet Coke drinking but, again, that would be ridiculous supposition.

These are the same people that attribute the cause of every cancer to be cigarette smoke.

Doctor: I'm sorry to inform you but you have prostate cancer.

Patient: How did this happen?

Doctor: Do you or anyone in your family use tobacco?

Patient: Well there was that one person I dated for 3 days in college that smoked...

Doctor: That's it! Second hand smoke!

Of course I exaggerate but it's the truth. As long as someone relatively close to you is a smoker, they blame everything on the smoke. I'm waiting for them to figure out a way to blame electronic cigarettes for cancer. Ohhh that water vapor they emit! It's cancerous to everyone!!!!

I always love the people who order the worst thing on the menu for weight loss, plus appetizers and eat all the bread... and ask for a diet soda. Who are you trying to kid? Your body still knows what you're doing to it.

You dont know their situation. Some people on diets or with certain medical conditions may be using the bread or the bad meal/appetizer as their "cheat" or reward for doing well. They'd rather cheat on their diets with some good food rather than a lame non-diet drink. I also know a few people who prefer the taste of diet drinks over regular despite not actively dieting. You just want to feel superior to them despite being completely ignorant.

People who drink diet soda like that generally do so because of the taste. It's very different from regular soda. Years ago, when everyone was saying that diet soda was the better choice, I switched and I had to get used to the different taste of it. After that, regular soda did not taste right to me.

Of course, I quite drinking all soda a few years after that and now I can't stand the taste of any of them. It's probably just me, but soda just does not taste the way it did when I was younger.

I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, so I guess I never considered that others might prefer the taste of diet drinks. I've always viewed them as something diabetics and those wanting to lose weight drank (and eating massive quantities of bread, pasta, fried foods, etc. negates any positive that may have been gained by drinking a sugar-free beverage).
I'm not sure when they started using high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar in soda, but that definitely changes the taste.

Where have you been? They attacked coffee years ago saying how horrible it is for you. So if diet soda is evil, so is coffee. Look at most coffee drinkers. Coffee is naturally bitter, yet you'll dump cream(bad for you), milk(bad for you), and a boat load of sugar(bad for you) into it to make a bitter drink sweet...a drink that naturally is bad for you, but you just added several other ingredients that are bad for you. Brilliant Holmes!

So, basically, "we don't know" is the real message here...plus the assumption that just because overweight people often drink diet sodas, then diet sodas must be causing people to be overweight...

Pure pseudo science.
07:11 AM on 07/25/2013
That's not quite a fair summary. The authors correctly note the "people who consume it may be disproportionately overweight to begin with" possibility.

I'd have to look at the original study for the increased risk of MI and stroke. That looks considerably higher than what would be expected for overweight alone. Again, diet soda drinkers could easily also disproportionately smoke, use OTC weight loss pills, etc. I'd have to look at the confounding variables.

There's also the fact high consumption of any type of soda is undoubtedly linked to relatively poor dietary choices overall.

If I had to bet, I'd tend to agree that confounding variables account for most of the issues. Still, the best we can conclude is that diet soda could be perfectly healthy, but that there are numerous alternatives that are likely to be better. Unless you really love the stuff, I'd consider avoiding it.
08:04 AM on 07/25/2013
There is absolutely no fact in this story whatsoever. This article is simply making assumptions on Diet Soda Drinkers saying that if you have an urge for Diet Soda because it is sweet then you will have more urges for sweets. This study is akin to the studies done decades ago on how smoking cigarettes leads to smoking pot and more hardcore drugs.

Lets see them do a study on 500 nutrition-conscious people who's only "treat" is a diet soda for when they DO have urges for something sweet and lets see the data on that study not the study for the people who go order the large Jack-in-the-box Value meal with a diet soda.

You just helped prove his point. The whole study is inconclusive and not very extensive. You stated yourself it lacks a ton of variables. It's basically a witch hunt on diet soda because that is today's fad. Today's sugary drinks is yesterdays cigarettes.

All of that is BS. Truth is, Diet soda is like starving yourself. Your body sees no sugar and shuts down your metabolism. In order to lose weight you need to regulate your blood sugar through low glycemic index foods. Eat some Steel cut oats in the AM with a bit of fruit and some greek yogurt. At lunch eat some meat with vegetables and some coffee for energy. Dinner should be balanced vegetable meat and carb. Then one hour before bed have a protien snack. yogurt, Sandwich meat, egg... Protein rebuilds your muscles during the night.
