So these southerners want government out of there lives. They are making it easier by dying sooner. Ya think there might be a relationship to expected lifespan and availability of government services? Alan Grayson was right when he said that the conservative solution to higher health care costs was to "die young".

Our founding fathers intended our press to act as a national watchdog...and they'd be very sad to see the corporate lapdog it's become.

Great. And this is what the rightwing wants to spread to the rest of the country.

They don't have enough sense to be embarrassed by this.

When people have poorer education, poor health care, poor eating and nutrition options, lower paying jobs, fewer job protections and work longer hours or multiple jobs both your life expectancy and quality of life are greatly diminished.

That is conservative Christian values at work.

It isn't only happening in the south though. It's is the country as a whole. All of those variables are present in America nation wide!!!

When more than 30% of your state lives in poverty you have no business tell the rest of the country what economic policy it should be running.

Oh, unless you're a REPUBLICAN...in that case say anything you want, the press will drink it up, print it out, and NEVER QUESTION YOU!

"Life Expectancy Shortest In Southern 'Poverty Belt'

Uh..small typo, should read:

Life Expectancy Shortest In Southern 'Republican Belt"

Beautiful illustration of Republican principles at work.

According to the Map, DC is sneaking away from the mainland. And looks to be about 50 miles out to sea! Congress is paddling hard! I hear the people on the beach can still hear them!! Stroke Stroke Stroke Stroke Stroke....stroke.....stroke....stroke

How can conservatives believe their political philosophy is right, when all the red states are poor on virtually every measure of well being. I once stratified red an blue states by household income and all the blue states except for NM were on the top and all the red ststes on the bottom,..Yet, they keep on believing

I don't I'm pretty sure Arizona and Utah are conservative states and NY and CA are liberal States and Florida isn't exactly Vermont.

As an Oklahoma, I can tell you that there are many factors working against the citizens in our state. Unlike our neighbors up north and back east, we do not have good systems of public transportation, and our geography is very spread out. This forces people to remain in their own little communities, and those most often have food deserts because there are no local markets that stock fresh produce and healthier fare. We also have a governor who is staunchly opposed to Obama, so she chose to forego the $8 billion or so that would have expanded health care coverage. Certain job markets here are strong (we have people arriving from other states to take advantage of that), but wages are low because the cost of living is relatively low. We also have the highest per capita incarceration rates for men and women and the highest per capita execution rate. Going to prison is a way to eat a hot meal every day.

Arkansas, Kentucky, West Virginia, are lead by democrats. Georgia has only had 2 republican governors in the last 120 years, and when was the last republican to hold the mayor position in D.C.?

08:55 PM on 07/20/2013
You may want to rethink your comment because there are more democrats than republicans on both Kentucky and West Virginia and both have democratic governors.
05:52 PM on 07/20/2013
This is not due to the Repubs or anything like that. There are some screwy laws down in the south for sure! However, bills like the "right to work" are half of the issue. The other half would be the fact that there are not any good paying jobs in these states. This is not a matter of policy per say.....but rather a lack of policy FORCING employers to pay people a living wage. Mc Donalds will hardly pay the rent because the folks that work there are putting in 40 hours a week to barely bring home $200. It's almost as bad as Social Security in this country.

Takes a while to adjust to paying employees from a time they didn't.
