Once again the American libss unlike their European counterparts refuse to be scientific about good approaches to eliminate green house gases.
There are 197 nuclear power plants in Europe. France alone has 59. The Chernobyl disaster was because of extremely poor design and safety implementation. As for Three Mile Island, many more people have been killed or injured at any number of conventional power plants.
From Scientific American Magazine December, 2007
Over the past few decades, however, a series of studies has called these stereotypes into question. Among the surprising conclusions: the waste produced by coal plants is actually more radioactive than that generated by their nuclear counterparts. In fact, the fly ash emitted by a power plant—a by-product from burning coal for electricity—carries into the surrounding environment 100 times more radiation than a nuclear power plant producing the same amount of energy

Nuclear energy has it pros - counter-balanced by many serious unresolved cons.
Which is not to say it shouldn't be pursued as one approach / solution.

But honestly, talking about being "scientific" and then praising nuclear because it's slightly less radioactive than COAL! Huh?

Maybe we could raise the bar just a little?

"Personally commit the US..."?????
I know he didn't spend a very long time actually in the senate, but I would have thought someone would have advised him that he can't go abroad and unilaterally make policy promises that actually require congressional action. Or does he think he has that power already?

I believe Obama is the most big-picture president America has ever seen, and alotta folks can't handle it. In fact, he'll make a great CEO if he survives these next four or eight years as POTUS.

Clean, Renewable Fuel Source

Fuel is not synonymous with petroleum and coal. Biomass energy systems can supply a sustainable source of fuel and will create millions of new clean jobs. Hemp biomass derived fuels and oils can replace every type of fossil fuel energy product.

During transpiration, the growing hemp plants “breathe in” CO2 (carbon dioxide) to build cell structure; the leftover oxygen is breathed out, replenishing Earth’s air supply. Then when the carbon rich hemp biomass is burned for energy the CO2 is released back into the air. The CO2 cycle comes close to ecological balance when the new fuel crop is grown the next year. Growing trees keeps 10 times the carbon dioxide in the Earth by keeping the infrastructure of the microbes, insects, plants, fungi, etc. alive for each tree. The older and bigger the tree, the more carbon dioxide is kept out of the atmosphere.

Not impressed by anything that is a food or requires substantial resources (land, water, soil) to grow instead of food.
I think it's unethical.
Sucking prehistoric slime out of the earth is fine with me. So is smashing atoms.
Work out a way to use garbage, and I may be impressed.

Liberals “ Not in my backyard!”
Wind power:
Proposed 130-turbine, 24-square-mile cluster of windmills would be about 8 miles from Kennedy's home in Hyannis Port. He opposed it.
Solar Power: Diane Feinstein: Wrote to the Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar to request that 12 proposed solar plans for the desert lands be scrapped, citing potential habitat destruction. (Desert tortoise even though it uses less than 1% of the land devoted to their protection)
Geo Thermal Power: The Sunrise Powerlink is a proposed power transmission line that would wind from Imperial County east of San Diego, through Anza-Borrego State Park, and down into San Diego. Proposed by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), the line is needed to transport wind and solar energy from projects in Imperial County to San Diego. You would think that the eco-lobby would be 100% behind a transmission line dedicated wholly to carrying “Save the Earth” solar and geothermal power from plants in the desert to power users in San Diego -Submitted by Doug L. Hoffman on Fri, 02/20/2009
Nuclear Power: Harry Reid opposes nuclear power even though he had no problem with the Nevada, even though they produce less radioactive pollution than coal fired plants” (December 13, 2007, Scientific American Magazine. “In fact, the fly ash emitted by a power plant—a by-product from burning coal for electricity—carries into the surrounding environment 100 times more radiation than a nuclear power plant producing the same amount of energy. “)

Conservatives: "Not in anyone's backyard!"
05:16 PM on 11/25/2009
It's actually the conservatives who own the majority of wind farms, solar power, and geothermal power plants, Unless you think T. Boone Pickens is a liberal.
06:27 PM on 11/25/2009
The point was, the hypocrisy of liberals. I think you missed it.
05:43 PM on 11/25/2009
Liberals and Conservatives, what are they? Every one of us has Liberal leanings and Conservative leanings. What you are really describing is "Do as I say, not as I do" on the part of politicians. Utter selfishness, they all practice this behavior while splitting the populace with the Liberal versus Conservative tags. Let's also not forget that this Union was formed on the backbone of sacrifices in the name of Liberalism.

Before this meeting happens, take a look at this;
United nations Treaty Event 2009
Treaty Event Towards Universal Participation and
Implementation. Google the first part and the
event agenda will be on the first page. This is a
treaty that could change government in the US.

Over time Americans will come together and lower greenhouse gases just by taking many baby steps in their homes, offices, businesses and transportation, by choosing green travel and recreation, by using less chemicals and electricity in their lives, by taking incremental actions like thinking twice before grabbing a handful of paper towels when a rag will do. Learning to Think Green is a simple perspective change with huge consequences. It doesn't matter whether you're a conservative or democrat, or whether you believe climate change is man-made or not, it's still good for the planet and good for the soul.

This is true, but it will probably take a least a generation to cross the tipping point. We have to hope we have as much time as it will take.

It takes a generation for most dramatic change to take place. I also hope the planet can hold out. But it's been around a lot longer than we have and has proven capable of taking care of itself, not always to our benefit.

One of the most interesting things to come out of the recent interest in Mayan prophesy as a result of 2012 is a belief that the earth has an innate intelligence of its own. This concept requires a paradigm shift for most people (although many know it intuitively) so despite what humans do or don't do, the earth will take required action to sustain itself. Interesting idea, no?

Over time? We don't have time. CO2 levels are rising faster than ever. Permafrost is melting, releasing CH4, Polar ice is melting, decreasing albedo. Maybe you don't understand positive feedback, but the warming is almost out of our control. We have almost killed the planet as we know it.
