Tiger Woods will probably own every record in golf before he retires. He already is arguably the GOAT. If he ties or surpasses 18 majors, I do not think there will any doubt left except for the extreme Tiger haters. It should be mentioned that he is 10 years younger than Snead when he hit 79 wins (Jack has 62 wins total) and Sam Snead had about two years of no competition because of WW2.

Not a golf fan but a few names rank above Woods, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer.

I assume you meant "few names" and not "a few names". Big difference.

Thanks for the grammar lesson. Not a golf fan but do know the history of golf. Jones has the only calendar grand slam and regularly defeated the professionals of his day, while he worked as a lawyer. The majority of golf historians rate Jones as the greatest of all time, for his record against pro players, the slam, and his impact on golf. Snead makes the list of four more PGA wins than Woods. Nicklaus has eighteen slams and it appears Woods may have a problem catching him. Palmer made the list because of his 90 pro wins (62 PGA) and he was the first golf TV star. Woods is a great golfer but to end up GOAT, he needs five more majors and a calendar grand slam.

Obviously not a fan and not very knowledgeable on the subject.

...statements like this are such a sign of the times - totally unsolicited exclamatory hyperbole completely unsupported by the facts...

...never mind the arguments of eras and equipment and facilities...all legitimate points but let's just stick with the ledger at hand...he needs four more tour wins to top Snead and FIVE more majors to top Nicklaus...until he eclipses those numbers let's just relax...

...stay blonde, Lindsey...

The facts do support her statement. He is way ahead of where Snead was at this age and on par with Jack in majors at same age. Jack won 6 majors after age 35 and Tiger is in far better shape.

The facts don 't support it yet....but may in the future. If she had said, 'at his age....he is the greatest of all time'....then maybe the facts support it.

NO, they don't!  I tell you what - if we're comparing eras then let Tiger play with the same equipment, on the same courses, and dealing with the same transportation issues and get back to me...Tiger is one of the best ever but the eras are like night and day...if Snead and Palmer and Nicklaus and Watson and Ballesteros et al played in this era in their heyday it's even money that Tiger would have a fewer majors to his credit...beating the Slumans and the Lehmans ain't quite the same thing...and btw, just so we're clear, 18 is still more than 14, no?...

... totally unsolicited exclamatory hyperbole completely unsupported by the facts...

Kind of like when your wife says you're the best husband, or your kids say your the best dad, or your mother says your the best son in the world.....we can assume that these are unsupported facts and they live in their own bubble. However, it's hard to dispute that tiger is among the greatest golfers in the world and that NONE of his contemporaries are even close. How many decades back do we have to go to find some one close.... Practically a CENTURY.

yeah, "AMONG" the greatest...and "NONE of contemporaries are even close"...you're proving my point...when Tiger was killing on tour he had NO competition...who?, DL III?...Azinger?... Sergio?...but NOW that he does a tougher field to deal with it's not so easy...he may still prove to be the best ever but he ain't there yet...and btw, if you want to play the "best ever card" then you have to include the intangibles - like equipment and facilities and oh yeah, prize money...ask Trevino about that...

If you use Tiger's own measuring stick, major championships, I doubt he will ever be considered as good as Jack. He may get to 18, but I don't think he will. But even if he ties him, I would have to give the nod to Jack. How can you be considered the GOAT if you have NEVER come from behind in crunch-time to win? I think he is like 0-58 in majors when trailing after 54 holes. He's a great front-runner, but if he's not in front when it gets down to the nitty-gritty, stick a fork in him. He's done.

All-time greats in other sports have all turned it on when it looked like they were down and out when a championship was on the line. Would anyone consider Michael Jordan the GOAT if he NEVER made a clutch shot to come from behind to win? What about Joe Montana's drive against the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII? Ali letting Foreman wear himself out to come from behind?

Tiger's ONE of the GOAT, but has a long way to go to be THE GOAT.

Ms. Vonn must be confused or knows little about golf. There is still a guy who won all the majors in one year, and retired at 27. He was from Atlanta. And, there is another guy they call "Jack", who has won more majors than anybody else. Not yet, Ms. Vonn, not yet.

Jack Nicklaus is the GOAT. Woods is a very talented golfer, but I think his personal life contributes too much distraction. I don't think Nacklaus, Snead, et al, had the same issues that Woods has. Makes a big difference IMO.

She is one smart lady. Snead's record will be broken for sure. Tiger has several years ahead of him to keep collecting titles. His record of most wins will stand for a long time.

Let the debate begin! Is Tom Brady better than Johnny Unitas? Is Hank Aaron better than Babe Ruth? Tiger Woods better than Jack, Sam or Arnold? Different eras, different rules and different equipment. How many golf courses (lay out) would still be the same if not for Tiger Woods? When you change a course to increase the level of difficulty for an unnamed player.....

Was Babe Ruth Better than Josh Gibson who played in his time..............No he was not so many celebrated white players paled in comparison to negro league players of that era. IMO yes Hank Aaron was better than Babe Ruth in any era.
