They need a bit more backbone to stand up to their wealthy patrons and actually work for the good of the people and of the nation. I see no sign of that yet, as they pander almost exclusively to the 1%. He who pays the piper calls the tune, and the political divisions in this country boil down to the people vs. the Kochs.

The problem isn't that the GOP doesn't have enough backbone. The real problem is they don't have enough brains and also not enough people in this country agree with them.

Our country and our economy has already suffered for years because of republican obstruction. Yet they want to sit on there hands some more. These people salaries come from our taxes yet they continue to put party first (or their own election) and country last.

While conservatives want the Republicans to show more backbone, the rest of the nation is anxiously awaiting it to show more brainpower. The GOP's problem is not sticking to a position--like on budget cuts; lower tax rates; the 41 repeals of Obamacare; global warming; the XL pipeline; its positions on contraception, women's pay rights, abortion; military spending; immigration; and, so on--but rather, being smart enough to recognize that it's out of touch with reality and knowing what actually works. The GOP is sinking into oblivion because it holds on to ideas better suited to 1853 than 2013. Intelligence is a much better attribute than obstinate stubbornness and the GOP would be well advised to recognize that.

Once you create and keep feeding a monster you have to live with it. The southern strategy of the GOP to win in 2010 has now grown into a being that it cannot control nor really wants to live with. They are struggling to tell folks that if we do what we falsely lead you to believe was the problem even you will not like the consequences ( austerity, the Ryan Budget ) and that most of the other things they told folks was in many instances against their own self-interest. (SNAP benefits food producers in part farmers in is indirect farm and food support so cutting it means...yea.) And those doing it represent farm and food producer interests..real bright I would say.

It's not the backbone that is lacking. It's a functioning brain.

It seems for the crowd at McHenry's meetings bi-partisanship means we win, you roll over. This is a group yearning for the good old days of Leave it to Beaver, today's reality hasn't even caused a blip in their consciousness.

In other words, they want to set the whole country on fire just to prove their point.

Two comments.

1) How much more rigid can these guys get in their opposition. They are totally inflexible now.

2) "Outspoken conservatives in western North Carolina don't want compromise on Capitol Hill unless it comes from President Barack Obama and other Democrats."

More proof that our education system is failing. Unless they have passed a law redefining the word, that IS NOT the definition of "compromise." Though it has been in use since early in President GWB's first term.

This is why the GOP is doomed...the only voice they listen to are the extremist idealogues....I guess it plays well to their local/vocal constituents...nationally??? Not so much.
