The Federal government is prohibited from funding abortions because of the Hyde amendment, period.

I am getting so sick of these senators, like my own Senator Nelson from Nebraska, who keep trying to hijack abortion with the health care bill. Like it or not, abortion is a legal right in this country and despite what these cretins try to claim, is overwhelmingly supported by the majority of Americans. It really doesn't have any place in the health care debate. It's just another way to try to stonewall things because they know it's controversial enough to be able to do that. And also to try to sneak legislation in that will seriously restrict women's rights in this country by burying it in the health care bill. Enough, already. If someone doesn't want an abortion and doesn't believe it's right, then don't have an abortion. But leave everyone else alone. Good god!!!!

I hope he loses his next election. Last I checked more than 50% of US voters are prochoice.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that from friendly moderates to scathing liberals...that US citizens, at the least, stop allowing their taxes to be automatically deducted from their pay. Make the feds wait until April before sending them their 'take' of your money.

Even better would be to stop paying taxes period until the federal government stops funding on any matter you personally oppose.

They don't want to fund abortion, ok, fair enough. Now go on and chalk me up to deciding none of my resources are going to go to any of the US' long in the tooth, murderous wars.

History looks like this
05:37 PM on 12/07/2009
Abortions can be drug induced and should not be expensive. This issue has become a shibboleth where the right is taking advantage of their opponent's inflexibility.

Indeed, the opposition to abortion seems derisive as right wingers seem to get abortions as quickly as anybody on the left. So, the proponents of "choice" talk of how abortion should be both safe and RARE quite as if politicians had anything to say about it.

Women who don't want babies are ready to take extreme measures. Society can either put them in jail or just shut up and stop posing. It's like the braille messages on drive up ATMs, politically correct and utterly incoherent.

ANY Republican who claims to protect a woman's right to choose that supports this Amendment, you just lost half your voter base.
05:09 PM on 12/07/2009
This is imposition of a religious belief upon all Americans, whether they have the same beliefs or not. As such, it violates the civil rights of many Americans, primarily women.

Democrats you either protect women's reproductive choice......or you'll be smaller than the Appalachian Republican remnants.

Progressives will break with you, and there will be NOTHING LEFT.

"NOTHING LEFT"

No pun intended.

If the men get their Viagra then the women should get all the free birth control and abortions they want.

I so agree with this.

Maybe we should limit prostate checks by taking it out of insurance coverage.
You get to pay for your own tests - not included in the new coverage if the insurance company receives Gov. funding.
!
Sounds mean but so is their messing with a women's right to choose.

Re-read the article. Limiting access to coverage will eliminate coverage.

This amendment has nothing to do with a woman's right to choice. Its nothing more than following a 30 year policy that " tax dollars" not be used to FUND abortion. Its just states that what has always been policy ...STAY policy!
Abortion has NEVER been payed for with tax dollars! And this amendment just continues that.

I am pro choice....I want to know if abortion was criminalized again and women were forced to have unwanted children...Who would be forced to pay for these kids growing up? Taxpayers.....If women were forced to raise kids they didn't want, possibly neglect or abuse them....What kind of adults would these Children be? Not so nice....Religion should have NOTHING to do with this subject. Will all the people who are against abortion adopt all the unwanted babies????? NO...This is a war against the poor and the young woman who have few options....This should not be in the legislation.....

I resent that these DINOs are called "moderate democrats" when in fact they are conservative democrats. There's is nothing "moderate" about them.

Actually, they're really Republicans in all but name. There's very little daylight between these so-called moderate Democrats and their conservative counterparts on the right.
