Outside of it looks extremely ominous. Inside of it is hell.
03:08 PM on 08/28/2013
Apocalyptic, end is near, etc., etc.,etc. and this isn't close to be the worst fire in California's history. You're definitely gonna run out of adjectives by the time this is over.
03:38 PM on 08/28/2013
Right now they rate it as the 13th largest fire on record in California. I'd say that's pretty big.

Well, shoot - let's just burn down all of our national forests! We'd save a lot of money then! Are you kidding me???
04:19 PM on 08/28/2013
Actually, forest fires are beneficial to forest ecosystems.....to people and property, not so much.

Well, let's hope they've cleared their brush and built carefully. It's not like wildfire isn't a natural part of the Sierra ecosystem.

Well, now that my first theory was shot down by the eloquently spoken minds of the interwebs, let me move on to my next idea. What about a sprinkler system in Yosemite. How many square miles do we cover in office buildings? Can't be any less than the "enormity" of Yosemite. What if we set up an all natural looking, i mean a sprinkler system where the water spots are either hidden or look like plants and it was fire proof and controlled in grids. So if there was a fire that looked okay and was needed to clear the under brush, it could be controlled while a neighboring area newly regenerating can be saved? Shoot that one down internet!

Creative ideas but you need to research them first. Yosemite is 3,081 kmĀ² in size and I don't think a sprinkler system would do much against a fire like this. And water is getting to be another problem.

Clearly climate change. Hotter weather, longer dry spells, more CO2 in the atmosphere, dryer underbrush.

It will be either total flood or fire please pick your demise.

As they stand on the Memorial of a Great Republican and a GREAT American

LIBERAL should KNOW if they cannot REMEMBER, the difference between Republican and Democrats USE TO BE:

How you do something? NOT WHY you do it

THE WHY was bipartisan. Debate is required for the WHY to be common to all Americans. The lack of representation is what motivated MLK, the original Tea Party and LINCOLN

I think you are twisting history

JFK address Civil Right before KING'S, I had a dream.

Bobby as Attorney General sent the troops and convicted the KKK

What probablity do you think could have happened for JFK, MLK and RFK to be killed in 5 short years

There are more NUTS now.  It was Pacs Americana and Nixon's Operation 40 like Obama's Seal Team 6.  Assassins train to kill like a MAD DOG with RABBIES.

The WHY as much as the what?  We no Nixon did Watergate but assassination was the WHY, not unlike Iran Contra of Reagan.
ON TOPIC and FACT.

Jimmy Carter also reminded us that MLK like JFK before him laid down their lives FOR ALL MANKIND

MAN lives with NATURE or will DIE ALONE within Nature

Time is slipping away to CONSERVE, PROTECT and live SMALLER.

We know Sailing Sips can move Cargo and Passengers for less, less than nothing.

It only cost TIME and the COST OF TIME will kill YOU not as fast as a HAWKISH UNPROVOKED WAR, but just as deadly.

We all need a say in our future, NOT JUST THE 1% GETTING richer for all future generations to have 90% of everything.

Oh, everyone has their opion.
For a free thinking free person IT IS EMPHASIS
Instead of using "quotes" which use up 250 words, instead of just more words it is EMPHASIS of a point
Instead of reading the entire long comment.  The caps summarize entire comment in a few important WORDS
Instead of HP badges I write for FAVORITE and nothing else.  I am not looking for friendship, just sharing my common knowldedge
I would match my FAVORITES to any and all.

I live not for FORTUNE OR FAME, but truth and knowledge

What we can take out of this -is lots of lives are at stake or ways of life. Also the Yosemite area, so then let us pitch in and help not just rant:

Support the NPS at its Donation Page'

Support the Yosemite Conservancy

Support the CDF and CCC all have web pages

The Sierra Club, too, has a web page

VOTE to support all parks National And State !

This is shameful ....the USDA WS gets a billion dollar budget to kill innocent wildlife, mostly birds, every year. The farm bill just gave Big Agriculture a trillion in subsidies over then years. People are already wasting money and instead of asking for more donations you should be demanding THAT money.

USDA is just one issue --Nuclear Got 3 trillion in 2010 and the banks 16 trillion------NPS is about the parks and is the YOSEMITE CONSERVANCY-----PS send links when you can-- we need to see how you arrive at your positions?

I am sure the teapublicans will vote NO to helping Yosemite and every other park. No..no....we have to send our money to our enemies!

Unless the USFS gets back into the timber management mode fast, these fires will only get bigger, more destructive, and more expensive. We have excluded fire for 40+ years and have prohibited any harvesting that would emulate the pre-eropean fire regime.

Nonsense. These forests have existed quietly and comfortably for over five thousand years with fires and without logging.

Well actually you are wrong creeps. Native Americans burned these forests every 5-15 years for thousands of years so that major crown fires were quite rare.
03:30 PM on 08/28/2013
The forest service falls under the USDA. Timber is handled by the Bureau of Land Management, which falls under the Department of the Interior.
02:25 PM on 08/28/2013
as terrifying as this photograph is, anyone who's spent any time out west during fire season has seen similar images.

nothing... nothing... in a photo compares to the reality of a forest fire.
