Well, we seem to have a money problem these days. Why not take it from anyone they can? If you question it, they will pass a law.

Such a "deal" as this with Swiss authorities has been done before. It's doubtful in the extreme that Switzerland will ever give up, in fact, their secrecy protections. It keeps the country wealthy, taking deposits from international tax scofflaws.

The operative word is "American" account holder. How much do you want to bet they all have passports from another country.

I really cannot think of anything more "big brother" than having to disclose where my money is invested. Who is our government to know where people invest and save their money?

I see a one way ticket to Somalia in your future. You can hide everything, just like you hide your patriotism and civic responsibility here.

The government wants to know because you and EVERYONE else has to pay taxes, even on investments.

Don't like it - Move to Somalia or Yemen.

What rock will Mitt Romney and the other GOP zillionaire corporate barons hide under? How can they get their $billion pre-tax unearned dollars out of the country into tax havens without getting caught by the jack-booted thugs of the federal government (created by the US Constitution). The novel Autumn of the Republic (about a second constitutional convention) talks about the scenario in which f00ls call for a convention, which goes wildly out of control, by design of a dark corporate and military coalition, resulting in a military takeover, followed by an attempt to impose a "biblical" (economically correct pro-corporate) constitution. By John T. Cullen, a good read that warns of a ticking time bomb (Article V) at the heart of the US Constitution. A well thought-out antidote to secession, treason, and corporate republicanism before it's too late. The nuts all have their guns, their babbles, their false ideas (like a pro-gun industry misreading of the 2nd Amendment)--all they need now is a new Leader (Fuehrer) to make their nightmare apocalypse happen. Then it won't be a silly computer game or a summer movie -- Germany 1933-1945 was real, and it looks like it can happen here if we do not vote the bums (GOP) out of office and get those billionaires back under control. Start by flushing Ronald Reagan down the loo, along with his preposterous, absurd ideations and astrologers.

How is the US government going to "prosecute" and fine a Swiss bank?

It can't. which is why this is a vacuous report about policy moves which will never happen.

All the Swiss banks have branches in the US, they can be prosecuted here and if they don't pay the fines they can lose their right to do business in the US. For Many of these banks the most profitable part of their business is here.

Some but not all have branches and it also depends on how they are stuctured.  Many branches actually operate independently so pouniishing a US based branch won't neccessarily have an impact on the Swiss side. I thnik the biggest issue is with the US restriciting a banks' ability to transfer money through the US.  That's a little easier to enforce.

Do not think there has ever been a more aggressive Administration (Pres. Obama's) that has ever gone after and clawed back monies owed to our government from either tax cheats or business violations! Pres. Obama and Atty.Gen Holder have been adamant for holding those responsible for violation of the law with record fines and record settlements back to our citizens for all AMERICANS and not just benefiting the 1%! Would like to see the names of the 100 Americans revealed who sought the advice of Swiss Bank WEGELIN (opened since 1741) which is now closed after paying fine of $57.8 Million Dollars after admitting to allow these 100 Americans to hide $ 1.2 BILLION DOLLARS from the IRS! Let's name and shame these TAX scofflaws because if it was the 99% we would be named so why not the 1%! Still it goes to show that republicans are not even considered ordinary when in office in their pursuit of the 1% in violation of our countries laws on the books, but Pres. Obama, Atty. Gen Holder and this DEMOCRATIC ADMINISTRATION are considered "EXTRAORDINARY" in getting a level playing field for ALL AMERICANS and not just benefiting the 1%... and now we all know who exactly has not been paying their TAXES and it looks like the majority of the 1%!

It's not illegal to shelter money in overseas accounts. You simply have to report to the IRS that it's there. Any earnings in the foreign country is subject to the tax laws of that country. If taxes are paid in a foreign country then American Taxes are 35% minus the tax paid in the other country when it's returned to the US.

I'm sure he participated in the 2009 voluntary disclosure penalty program and then was too chicken to admit it to the American people. Good riddance to that guy.

I don't trust Eric Holder to negotiate a lawn service contract.

His efforts to bring justice to Wall Street have been laughable, except that so many people got hurt by those capitalists behaving badly.

Having faith that he got this deal correctly
requires a leap I just can't make
across a chasm of suspicion so large

Two things: 1. The banksters are not capitalists, they are corporate socialists; and 2. Americans will need to step forward and administer justice to these bloody banksters.
