This article makes it sound like they dumped a truckload of Koolaid into the ocean, not radioactive isotopes with a half life of 30 years that will give me bone cancer or leukemia, read "poison to humans" into the ocean in which fish sold to me to eat swim in and carry the Cesium-134 in their tissues, which I am expected to eat. Nothing to fear?

We have radioactivity around us all day long. This is just a little background radiation like when we fly on a jet.

Yes, that is the line the nuke industry uses to act like it's no big deal.

''This is just a little background radiation like when we fly on a jet''

Sure.

And in the UK, the charity Cancer UK has revised the odds of you getting a cancer in your lifetime from 3 to 1 to 2.5 to one. They might be your kind of odds, but they're certainly not mine.

You shills and your 'background radiation' BS. If what you claim was really true there'd be no need for the likes of TEPCO to lie, nor for governments to turn off radiological detectors or raise 'safe' limits by factors rating in their thousands.

Begone.

If you believe the paranoid people at Zerohedge there will be people growing extra limbs every day now.

Calm down people, the ocean is huge so any radiation beyond the immediate leak area will be too diluted to cause problems.

It was meant less as hyperbole and more as mockery. I wish I was exaggerating though. ZH is often cited by various people in comments here and if you read the comments, and even the articles there that is what they are predicting.

Copied from a friend...

Interesting the way radioactive disasters have a way of becoming good news. Chernobyl is just a beautiful wildlife sanctuary now. A huge increase in birth defects around Chernobyl, but not HERE. Fukishima is far, far away. The poisoned sea may radiate fish, but not OUR fish, and we can learn about sea currents as the radioactive particles drift through the ocean. That's a good thing. We're just so safe. No cause for alarm. All is well. Relax. Smile. Have a nice day.

In the US there has been an increase in babies born with congenital hypothyroidism. That is an underactive thyroid gland. Some scientists and doctors tie that to the release of radioactive iodine from Fukushima that was found to have made it to the US. The seaweed off the California coast was found to have a concentration of radioactive iodine from Fukushima, as seaweed concentrates iodine which is why people eat it for health reasons. The radioactive seaweed shouldn't be eaten, and any seaweed products from Japan should be tested first.

I lived during the era of the above-ground atomic bomb tests with clouds of radiation floating across the globe after each detonation by the US, the USSR and France. We get tested all the time and none of us was found to have any excess radiation in our system. This is just a small blast that will be undetectable in a year.

can you say goiter?
06:34 PM on 09/02/2013
Why, whats wrong with cranberries, strawberries, dried beans or yogurt? Or maybe you weren't talking about the ocean? So Doc. How long do I have before goiter strikes?
09:56 PM on 09/02/2013
Well, lucky you.

What about those that wish to swim and exercise and fish in the ocean? I guess you don't care, right. Cause you're happy not eating from the ocean.

What about all the sealife - do they get an option - can they 'opt-out' from nuke pollution in their envionment?

As I'm a vegetarian, I haven't eaten seafood for close to thirty years. So I wont be eating ocean food either - but it doesn't stop me being deeply concerned about where we are going.

The amount of mercury pouring out of coal-fired plants is what is poisoning our oceans.

To use natural gas to replace coal we have to frack in order to get the amount of natural gas necessary.

To use wind turbines to replace fossil fuels we have to place hundreds-of-thousands of them everywhere the wind blows fast enough. That means millions more dead birds, infrasonic waves making people sick anywhere near the wind turbines.

If we use solar-electric panels we need hundreds of square miles of them which destroys the environment where they are built. plus, the pollution from manufacturing them would produce hundreds-of-millions of tons of toxic waste.

There is no pollution-free electricity. The best option is to use solar-electric panels on our homes and not from a central location and to drastically reduce electricity usage. We should stop watching TV, use a microwave instead of ovens and stovetops, stop using heating and air conditioning by going back to natural airflow and passive heating and using LEDs for lighting and minimizing that as much as possible. Conservation is the best way to go.

Scary” theory?? To whom? This is another example of a scholarly research effort subverted by a “journalist” with a cause and then picked up by every internet site looking for traffic. The abstract for the actual paper states:

“Following the March 2011 Fukushima disaster, large amounts of water contaminated with radionuclides, including Cesium-137, were released into the Pacific Ocean...Using an ensemble of regional eddy-resolving simulations, this study investigates the long-term ventilation pathways of the leaked Cs-137 in the North Pacific Ocean. The simulations suggest that the contaminated plume would have been rapidly diluted below 10,000 Bq/m3 by the energetic Kuroshio Current and Kurushio Extension by July 2011. Based on our source function of 22 Bq/m3, which sits at the upper range of the published estimates, waters with Cs-137 concentrations >10 Bq/m3 are projected to reach the northwestern American coast and the Hawaiian archipelago by early 2014. “

Even the article acknowledges that the rad levels are below UN WHO safety hazard concern limits. How far? For comparison: The human body typically contains about 20,000 bequerels from radioactive potassium and carbon. The seawater concentration that the scientists are calculating is 10 bequerels per cubic meter! Very detectable and usable as a tracer to track sea currents and sea life. Not a danger to anyone.

05:43 PM on 09/02/2013
No.  The point is the disaster that people continually predict does not happen.  The area around Chernobyl is not the dead zone for 10,000 years that was prophesied.  The tens of millions of dead are living normal lives.  Fukushima is not a dead zone either and no deaths have been attributed to radiation there.  It is not that disaster is happening elsewhere, it is that the effects of radiation are being blown out of proportion and you are being lied to about the doomed future of the planet.

... soon to be all of them.
Please note... the salt spray will irradiate the earth on the shoreline... which will then dry and become radioactive dust to be blown all over the Nation.
It will also happen from the Atlantic side as this isn't localized by any stretch of the imagination.

It will join the permanent cache of mercury in our atmosphere, constantly circling the globe. Falling in precipitate, drying into dust and inhaled, eaten, falling into the ocean to be absorbed by microorganisms, eaten by fish, then by us. On and on.

Please forgive the HP. It's enough that they record, every week or three, that this global disaster is not over for Japan or anyone with a Pacific shoreline. The entire USA Main Scheme Media has dropped the ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan like it was either over, er a...well; a hot radioactive reactor core; seeping radioactive isotopes into the Earth's atmosphere and it's largest ocean.

You know, what in the USA/UK media is unimportant: yadda, yadda...background foreign news...
