funny how Russia says no to intervention-after selling the Chemical WMD to Syria-naughty naughty!
11:11 PM on 09/04/2013
Why not bomb Russia? Let's invade them and take their oil. Teach them a lesson for messing with interests of the U.S. Who else can we attack? Iran needs a bombing for their desire to develop nuclear weapons. Sudan kills civilians. Let's send some drones their way. Canada sends cold weather our way causing us to use more energy that they sell us. Invade them and take their oil. What are they gonna do? There must be more targets. I'll sleep on it and look at a globe before I go to bed tonight.

Curses! The secret cold weather weapon discovered! Watch the tough talk or we'll fire our missile at you!

LOL. Message received! My lips are sealed with regards to our friends to the north.

Thank God it won't be an act of war. I suppose hurling cruise missiles at another country is more of a social thing.

Criticizing Russia for selling arms to Syria is hypocritical.

The US sold arms to Saddam 'Axis of Evil' Hussein.
The US trained and armed the Taliban in the 1980s.
The US installed General Pinochet in Chile.
The US installed a dictator in Iran in the 1950s.
The US is still the only state to commit mass murder via the nuclear bomb
The US dismantled Iraq's security without a plan to maintain order

By comparison, Russia selling a few weapons to a so far un-aggressive and stagnant state is hardly a controversy.

There isn't a thing wrong with any of the things you listed. None compare to gassing your own people.

perhaps you would rather say kill em all let Allah sort em out? Or maybe wait for them to come to your home and gas you?

There's plenty more mass murder going on. The Congo continues to be unresolved. Murder rates are peaking in Iraq, back to 1000 people every month - maybe deal with that mess first?

Hagel, the candidate from Sequoia, has got nothing. That's why he's babbling.
EVERYONE in the region has chemical weapons. Especially, You-know-who, whose weapons have turned up in the hands of the Free Syrian army cannibals. RPG projectiles, anti-tank tubes, comms gear. The Zionist entity is hand-in-glove with these scum.
Hagel, who bombed Ghouta? Answer the question, don't dodge around.
Your slimy testimony will be held against you in the International Criminal Court, if any civilisation is left standing, after Putin defends Syria and World War Three descends, as is likely.
In any event you will get American naval personnel killed.

Kind of worrying when the conspiracy theories are starting to look more logical and plausible than the line put out by the government.

No matter how this situation turns out it's bad....

I find it incredible that people with no idea what the intelligence reports indicate are so sure that Assad is an angel and those people aren't really dead.

What would America do if the Holocaust happened today, nothing? Granted we didn't go to war with Germany in WWII because of millions of Jews being gassed to death in an oven. It was only after the war did we realize that those atrocities occur. Yet in our digital age, what would we do if we knew a group of people were being gassed by their leader?

I am war weary myself, yet I'm not fully convinced that doing nothing is the best course of action now or for tomorrow's sake.

If there are laws and treatises on the books, why isn't the international community not doing anything? Why isn't the UN doing anything about it other than fleeing town?
11:17 PM on 09/04/2013
you are 100% right. And since we are only bombing them to oblivion for 60 days straight but other allies will have their boots on the ground as becomes required...we just have an excess stockpile of toys we need to recycle sp we get to go first. But France and UK have quite a mighty force as does most of European nations

I doubt that anyone thinks that Assad is an angel other than possibly his mother and probably not even her. The problem is that many have no faith in the intelligence community or the political class after the Iraqi WMD debacle. It is normal to be sceptical of unsubstantiated allegations by people with a proven history of lying.

If the intelligence evidence is so overwhelming then why is not a single nation standing behind the US in this? Gotta start asking yourself that question eventually.
12:04 AM on 09/05/2013
Oh definitely, my thing is if there are rules against the use of chemical weapons, why isn't the international community enforcing them....
I know some people would hate me as a President, but I'd sit this one out.
Personally, every time someone would ask me a question about Syria, I'd tell them to get on to the next question.
I can't help but feel as if Syria is being foisted onto the American people because it's located in the Middle East....
Would we care if Syria was a country in Africa or Asia Pacific like Burma?

Air strikes are not an act of war? So Pearl Harbor wasn't an act of war then, it was just a "limited air strike with no boots on the ground", right? I think I see how it works now.

There is a difference between declaring war and using "limited military force". The POTUS can order the USMC to attack any entity, but he cannot order them to station permanent forces and occupy someone. I think he made a good decision by allowing the people's elected officials to vote on the use of force.

He also reminded everyone that the opinions of the elected officials don't matter in his final decision. So there's that. I love the USMC, but I don't want to see those Devil Dogs let out until irrefutable evidence is presented to all parties involved, including the public.

France24, and the Independent, have reported that the UK gave licenses to sell chemical weapons to Syria 10 months after the civil war started:

http://www.france24.com/en/20130902-uk-approved-nerve-gas-chemical-weapons-exports-syria
11:00 PM on 09/04/2013
There full of it...the UK is signed onto the Chemical Weapons Convention (as is most of the world( and is not allowed to make chemical weapons (or the many of the PRECURSORS), use them, or to have them. They are required to destroy their stockpiles regardless of where they are in the world.

I suggest you review the Chemical Weapons Convention before you make these claims.
11:03 PM on 09/04/2013
The article is very misleading...these chemicals can be used in the production of Sarin, but so can isopropyl alcohol. These chemicals, in themselves, are not banned. They would be worthless without the other components needed to make the chemical weapons.

I agree with you though with the advantage of 20-20 hindsight it does appear that the decision to issue that export licence to a country in the middle of a civil war may not have been as well though out as it could have been.

so in all, there isn't any concrete exact evidence who gassed. Hagel uses Russia as an excuse as the supplier. Putin openly claims Russia supplies Syria with defense technology to prevent missile and air attacks. I can buy that, but I cannot buy Hagel's vague finger pointing to implement Russia as this almost the familiar BS of starting the cold war all over again! I was in the marines during the final years of the cold war and spot a rat when I see one! Hagel is a rat!

What if that is true? Do we want Syria to be bombed or not? The last time, America intervened for humanitarian reasons and not for oil reasons was in Bosnia but it was very late. The question is if in fact this is a humanitarian issue and not an oil driven war, do we want to act or not? I think I would.

Hillary and Obama ran weapons of mass destruction (WMD) thru Benghazi, Lybia to Syria to muslim rebels. Whats Hagel's point.? Obama admin. is squeeky clean and they arent? This administration doesnt have the political talent or savy to wage a winning war against girl scouts and win. (no offense to girl scouts)
10:53 PM on 09/04/2013
'This administration doesnt have the political talent or savy to wage a winning war against girl scouts and win.'

But it does, according to you, have the 'talent and savy' to supply the Syrian Opposition with weapons of mass destruction without leaving a scrap of evidence ...

Yep, they have no talent. Hang on to your hat. Complete baffoonery to follow. Looks like youre used to it and willing to go along. As for evidence-consider 4 dead Americans left on the their field of play in Benghazi.  But as Hillary said "Who Cares!"

No. It didn't. WMDs are nuclear, biological and chemical. None were supplied to the Syrian rebels by the US at any time.
