The ignorance of this country, the government and the people who are unwittingly supporting this outlaw government will let its lesser advantaged people starve. There is more than just handing out subsidies, there is the problem of making people aware of the subsidies available. While we as Americans claim to be of Christian ethics we deliberately withhold information on helping those truly in need.

Our government will put ridiculous income requirements on those who are truly at the lowest end of the economic scale while subsidizing corporate farms and the rich that control these farms. We are conned into believing that our policies in Iraq and Afghanistan are for the peace and security of America, very little truth here as years after the start of the war has shown us. This is not of a Christian nation or what we are led to believe.

We as Americans form the top to the bottom of the social/economic scale need to become more educated on the operation of our government and the treatment of its citizens, all of its citizens. Subsidizing war and not feeding its people in this country is no better than any other government that we criticize as not meeting our, the U.S. standards of human rights. We as Americans need to question the ethics of our own government.

America was never a "Christian Nation" as many want to believe, but we certainly do resemble the
effects of Christian subversion that has lead to disasters well documented in World History. The moment this religion gets a toe hold on governance, anarchists take control. This is a road so well traveled that no one with a sense to time and place in world affairs can disown.

Too bad the writer of this story is so uninformed. The 40 billion in cuts (over 10 years) is to able bodied people WITHOUT dependents. So the "children card" that liberals love to play does not apply to this. But that has never stopped liberals before.

As a Citizens Watch supervisor I saw many things that most people never see about how the vulnerable amongst us must live.

"Look, we got bread!" Those were the excited words of a hungry 3 year old who greeted me at her door when I did a ride-along with a local cop. He wanted me to see how the poor live in our community, and I have never forgotten the excitement in her voice over a lousy piece of Wonderbread on the day welfare checks went out (awhile back). Yes, her mother can be faulted for some bad choices, but she also had some bad luck, and her 2 children were definitely paying the price -- with hunger and in other ways. Eventually the schools and the community pay the price too, so I believe we should do what we can when kids are young (food stamps, health care, Headstart, afterschool programs, and so forth) to help them grow into people who make positive contributions in life. There are MANY examples of people who have taken this trajectory.

Not only do the GOP and vulture billionaires lack any empathy for the 99%, they have no long-term business sense. It's got to be cheaper to provide these services for the first 20 years than pay for policing and prison costs for the next 50.

Thanks for your comment. Those of us who work in schools or others who work in public service jobs can't miss the cycle of poverty; which prompts stories like yours. Last year, three children came to school hungry because mom was in jail. There are families where children are living temporarily with elderly grandparents until they can be placed in foster homes. The Radical Republicans/TPP here in Texas, our outstanding Lege are setting up ways that mean more Texans will be edged closer to homelessness and hunger.

Walmart and other low wage employers are happy when their employees are on food stamps, it means their wages are low enough. Walmart's business strategy is for the taxpayers to pick up part of their labor costs. If you force them and other low wage employers to pay a living wage, that is how you get people off food stamps.

Prices would rise, some. Prices should rise. But they would not be in the same boat, they would be in a less leaky boat floating a little higher on the waves.

What would you know? Where do you get your great volume of knowledge that says being cruel to your fellow man is good? I can tell from your posts you are uneducated; so tell me where did you get this relic of 19th century American thought? I'll bet you listen to Rush Limbaugh a lot.

The taxpayer is not picking up labor costs. The employee should have to live on what he/she can earn. The taxpayer is subsidizing their fellow citizen...which should stop.

The Bible clearly says that governmental authority includes the protection of the poor in particular, and instructs political rulers to promote their well-being. So the argument that the poor should just be left to churches and private charity is an unbiblical argument.

Cutting SNAP is SIN, plain and simple!

The Bible also directs gov authorities to practice periodic universal Debt Jubilees.

Instead, we get SNAP cuts, and Debt Jubilees for banks via QE forever.

You mean the mom and her three kids at the mini mart, before school Friday, buying 3 big bags of Hot Cheetos and three big bottles of Powerade with her SNAP card? The government needs to regulate what can be purchased with SNAP. Then maybe more taxpayers might be more sympathetic.

A lot of "god" in this country, specially amongst the "Christian politicians" but very little in the way of compassion. Like that song said "too many churches, and not enough faith"...

I am not a Christian so I do not go to church. Besides, having devout "christian" beliefs does not necessarily guarantee the person is a "good person"...look at all the compassionate conservatives, claiming Christian values, and wanting to dismantle all social safety nets.

People have been brainwashed by propaganda to be afraid of the word 'Socialism.' Truth is, the Corporations worth Billions, and the banks have received hand outs from tax payer money in the form of tax breaks, subsidies, and bail outs. They toast to "Capitalism" when it suits them, and cry foul "Socialism" when it suits them.
If every American citizen were given the same breaks in the form of tax breaks, subsidies, and interest free bail out money, every American would be a millionaire. People have been arguing the perfect form of government since Plato. We have seen pure Socialism doesn't work if you have to stand in line 4 hours to get a bag of potatoes. neither does pure capitalism work when you have children suffering in sweat shops. It is not "either/or", it is finding a working balance between the two.

Have you seen the Fox News "face" of a SNAP recipient -- a young blond California surfer who brags about cheating on food stamps? Why is Fox News lying? Why don't they tell the real facts and show the real faces of kids who are still hungry even though their parents work?

Anyone want to justify FOX's actions????

Only in America can we be either be so blind or clueless to what's really going on. First and foremost in this great country that treats all its citizens equally, I'm being sarcastic here, according to an NPR report we waste 40% of our agricultural products, food through over production or spoilage. Forty percent that's ridiculous. The biggest problem in America is not cutting SNAP or subsidized housing and the food program but lack of organization. We have millions of so called managers sitting in offices not doing or lack the skills to preform their jobs. Somewhere between the farm and the food stores we are losing probably close to one third of our most precious commodity.

People going hungry in America reflects just what a mess this country is in. We can organize a war in a foreign land without conscience but we are repulsed at feeding those that are truly in need in this country. We are supposed to be a caring, Christian nation, (...one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all) I heard that somewhere anyway. America needs to get back on track and realize who and what we should be.

It used to read "one nation, indivisible, with liberty...."

Then, because the author of the Pledge was a Socialist, and the McCarthy hearings wanted to get rid of all remnants of America's Socialist influences, and assert a Christian Nation, the words were changed in the 1950s
