I made my first trip to "Red China" in 1983. I saw lots of Mao suits and "Flying Pigeon" bicycles.
I flew on airplanes where an overhand knot was used instead of a buckle to cinch me into my seat.
Today China is a country of big ideas, and massive public projects that will leave us in a stone age of our own design.
Compare the High Speed Trains and Jetsonlike Airports in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing to the NYC airports and NY transit system.
We are breaking apart at the seams! We need to support BIG IDEAS that create jobs and build infrastructure for the future or we will be left behind.

We have already been left behind.

Despite much of the country wanting to move into the 21st Century you can always count on conservatives and libertarians doing their best to pull the country back to the 19th Century. I guess their utopia would be Somali where there is minimal government and totally unregulated markets. No that's some kind of model.

Also our political system is so heavily tilted towards favoring big oil. It would not be in the best interest for big oil to compete with green technology, mass transit anything that uses less oil. The politicians have been bought. Thats why even after the worst financial crisis we still cant get financial regulation that has teeth coz the polticians both dems and rethugs have been bought.

The problems with US is we have been brain washed to belive we are the best..I keep hearing that word American exceptionalism...but what people dont realize is that other countries have caught up with USA. USA acts like its us vs the third world not realizing how advanced other countries have become. Drill baby Drill..has now become our motto for the future...Oil is so old school..instead it should be green baby green as this is the future. The country that leads in green technology rules the world and china and many european countries are headed that direction. Our leaders like bush are so heavilly invested in big oil that they cant see a future without oil.

Ice, you are right on! The US is in a decline as a world leader. As China adopts more and more technology, their middleclass will expand and demand more. We can't keep up with it.The American people have surrendered all their rights and the hope for innovation to the Facist system of government that we are now living with in this country. Multinational corps rule America and a shot was never fired as they bought our government out. Democracy is dead. Since Corps have no allegiance to this country, our jobs willcontinue to leave, we will live with older infrastructure and systems, until we have a thrid world nation, something like Mexico. I see a very bleak and uneventful century in our country's future of America making any meaningful contribution to the rest of the world. A handful of folks will control the wealth of this nation as our middleclass becomes a figment of the collective imagination. We are a nation of footdraggers and conservative Neanderthals are leading the charge to our downfall. With every election that occurs in this country, my husband and I look at leaving our beloved country as it is taken over by a group of conservative, theocratic, Stoneage morons. I hope the younger generation wakes up to what they are losing, but then again, they would have to put away the WIIs, Gameboys. and other electronic toys to participate. I'm not sure they are up to it. I hope I am wrong.

Only 25% of the people even have a passport so most Americans haven't been outside the country and don't have a clue about the rest of the world other than what they hear on the corporate TV. Totally clueless and so easily manipulated that the purveyors of a corrupt and ossified political system don't even have to try very hard anymore. One thing Americans haven't realized that no matter how far America falls behind and how difficult their lives become the lives of the pampered and privileged plutocracy, whether the Republican or Democratic wing of the Corporatist Party, will be just fine.

Actually, the Chinese are the only ones on the planet who have it right this time. Regarding rail technology this is the best there is.

Also, as usual, the Chinese have nothing to do with developing it. This rail system is known as magnetic levitation (MagLev). It is based on the use of Tesla's electromagnetic field generation, which, when combined with the use of giant magnets, creates a frictionless propulsion system.

The trains and propulsion system are the work of German firms Siemens and Thyssen Krupp AG.

Remember that China for any major project requires that Subsidiary be set up which it gets a 50% ownership interest in and that most production/MFG be quickly transferred into their country as was the case with buying Boeing Jets and etc... and then if its major industry, after the skill level is transfered they set up a 100% government owned competition.. as they have now done with their verision of Airbus.

Are you sure it's MagLev? MagLev does not need the overhead power source and the tracks don't look like MagLev tracks. Just asking.

And yet the country that has the highest percentage of its population in the world in prison is us... and then there are the 3 million dead in S.E Asia.. good morning Vietnam and 500K plus dead in Iraq... and 45K dying per year because of a lack of healthcare here...

China has a terrible human rights record... yet then we have to borrow from them and buy everything from them...

At this point I'm withholding my righteous indignation since I have that feeling of living somewhat in a glass house these days..

China is definitely the new frontier. They are educated, intelligent, and curious about the world. Beijing built a whole subway system in less time than New York has had time to figure out what to build in Ground Zero. They are making electric cars while we sit home and watch Hannity and chant "drill baby drill." Our nation is a relic, an internationally shared opinion outside the US, if people ever traveled they'd figure this out. Instead of congratulating the Chinese, too many of us resort to xenophobic and racist comments, downplaying the great accomplishments of a great nation and people. That is the sign of a sad, desperate nation who knows its time is up.

US will rise up again. Well infact it is not even fallen, it is slowing down in term of development. But when its focus is moved away from the Cold War fixation and get in tune with the 21st century, you will see another exceptional US chargin ahead of the rest of the world again.

But first it has to wake up ... that is a tough part ... it takes China over three centuries to wake up after their civilation hit the peak, and their ships travled all the way to Africa (and possibly to America) and came back claiming nothing to see, then closed all sea ports and felt to sleep. The rest is history.

US will not make the same mistake again.

You don't even believe your own mindless repetition of the propaganda you were trained to believe. And yes Duhmerica, if it survives will make the same mistake again because you're making it now.

Too much of the "progress" we saw in the 20th century was the product of foreigners who couldn't beat the class system of Europe or the devastation of postwar Europe. They emigrated here.

America has a long history of anti-intellectualism. It's just that our political and legal system allowed a few to "buck" the social stigma of being very, very smart.

Those Chinese need to follow America's example and launch an unnecessary war somewhere that will drain their coffers of any extra money, so that they can fund killing and mayhem instead of such foolish things like...oh, I dunno...like infrastructure. Mass transit is for schmucks. They should be developing gas-guzzling SUVs and Hummers. Didn't they learn anything from America during the past decade?

Yeah, USA USA>. we are the greatest. We invent everything and are light years ahead of everyone on earth. Best health care, best educational system, best technology , everything!! Were number one!!

Oh wait, that was before the Ivy Greed Capitalist sold us down the river for more profit, moved all our best jobs overseas, transferred all our technologies overseas, and stopped investing in any research because that cut into their profit margin. They did it all in the name of more mansions, more yachts , more money in their game of greed. Even the CEO of GE and others have admitted to it. So now we are has beens, currently wanna be's, quickly on our way to envying those in Rwanda.
Thank you Ivy Greed schools, Thank you Ivy Greed capitalist, thank you Politicians everywhere and in all parties who do the bidding of the highest ivy greed bidder. Thank you for making the USA only a distant memory.

It's gotten to the point where I would really like to relocate to Japan again because daily life is easier and more comfortable, despite the long work hours, but at the same time, I don't want to give up on my country. I feel like we're in a tailspin to 3d-world status and for the first time, I understand what it must be like to be a citizen of an unstable nation.

Any ideas? I really have been active in political campaigns, but after this healthcare debacle, I feel like giving up.

Term limit. That is the only way to remove legalized corruption which is what this country is having.

What kind if devastation a senator has over a country when he can sit in Congress and make laws for over 30 or 40 years? It is absoutely Royalty and all the perks and corruption it carries.

'...term limits' and campaign reform.!
02:23 PM on 12/27/2009
I understand your point. However here in CA we have term limits for state Sens and its proving to be a disadvantage. Specifically in how legislation progresses through the system. Bills can take a very long evolutionary path before they make it to final votes. What CA has discovered is that too many freshmen reps having to do a combination of learning the ropes, build legislation and respond to constituents concerns makes for a difficult learning-curve-combo. Like it or not experience is a good thing. Especially when moving bills through the system and buildingg support for them.

In my opinion it isnt term limits that we need. It accountability and vigilance on our part. Just as I dont want to see a politician bought out I don't want to see a talented one being driven out of office via an imposed term limit.

The work should be on our end just as it is on theirs.

why are most comments jealous of Chinese advancement? This is more and more about US not having one than its great news Chna has one.

This kind of feeling called superiority complex. A belief than America is a super power.
02:04 PM on 12/27/2009
It is a called dialgoue. The more people talk about it (whether or not it carries a jealous or suspiciou tone), the more people get closer to solution on how to make USA exception and great again. What you really don't want is No See, No Hear, No Talk and pretend business as usual.

It is mutual actual. In China, people constantly talk about US and about all its greatness and shortcoming. Now people in US start to talk about all the shortcomings of China, and occasionaly some of the great things from China. It is information cross-samination.
12:29 PM on 12/27/2009
I'm not surprised. China is run by the government full of engineers. Their religion is technology and industry.

lawyers are the least of our problems. Its the need for always seeking more and more profit at a exponentially growing rate. Its not even to make a profit anymore. Ivy Greed educators teach us that we must always increase our profits , or we are no good. People are no longer satisfied with buying stock and getting rich, like in the case of those who invested in Coca Cola, Ford, and all the other great USA companies that made many millionaires, over a very long term period though. No, we want it all, we want it now, and all that has done was to drive jobs away, wages down, profits up, and our country into a downward spiral.
No, being realistic about it, Lawyers have little to do with it beyond getting the wishes of the Ivy Greeders met by bribing congress, fighting in courts to get even the 14th amendment changed so a corporation has the rights of a person, but none of the responsibilities, and more. Nope, Lawyers just do the bidding of the Ivy greeders, so they themselves can profit from the chaos. Its the instant wealth, and constant demand for huge profit growths that made us what we are today. Just an ember of flickering light from what was once a mega super power. Thanks Ivy greed schools and supporters!!

face it people, trains are evil since the old days of the Wild West when men were men, women were women, Indians were better dead than red and gunpoint was justice. This wonderful way of life was destroyed by evil governmental trains that brought decadent civilisation to Bible-fearing, gun-loving real Americans. In other words the train destroyed the real America and liberal East -Coast European socialism was brought over to the West Coast, which turned into a decadent liberal state. America's only hope is to blow up the evil tracks and go back to a yeoman society. Amen.
