"Threatens to crowd out our acceptance of children, as they arrive to us, with our desires for what we hope them to be.”

This is already happening; at least on a personality level. My father already planned for me to be a Pro Baseball player before I was born. No choices in life til high school...

Sick idea. If you are having trouble conceiving, why not adopt one of the beautiful children already on the planet?

I just posted a comment above yours about someone I know. She (selfishly, in my opinion) wants "brand new". Not only has she obtained the sperm and egg of two people who don't even know each other, she is insisting on having her 46-year-old body carry and give birth to this baby. I mean, really, if you're going fake baby, why not let someone else actually carry it in their young, able body too? Anyhow, when I've asked her about adoption, her answer (and apparently a common one) is, "The only babies you can adopt in the U.S. are crack babies. They are damaged. I don't want a crack baby. And I don't want a child who is already 8 years old...and damaged." So, there's the answer. Spoiled and wanting brand new right out of the package. They can afford to have it that way.

""The only babies you can adopt in the U.S. are crack babies."

I'm sure that's an overstatement but a lot babies are born to drug addicts. Many suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome. I know a couple who adopted one of these babies, and he made their lives miserable. He was trouble from early childhood through adulthood. He became an alcoholic and a drug addict and ended up committing suicide.

There is a charity devoted to paying drug addicts to undergo voluntary sterilization. It should be a government program.

funny, on the one hand some dabble in picking and choosing characteristics and some of those have others carry their offspring for them. gives new meaning to shopping it around.
and on the other end of the spectrum we have rampant, unchecked reproduction in the poorest parts of the world and here in the US, parents who are refusing immunizations for their kids so that we are being confronted w diseases that were practically wiped out decades ago, thanks to immunizations.
what's it gonna be? 18th c or 22nd c?

Q: does the medically forced conception in all its micro-ness only perhaps leave open for the possibility of weakened humans, and in this case, while obvious admired traits might be accomplished, there are still too many genetic equations that could result in weaker overall human specimens?
nature has from the beginning had its own way of weeding out the weak and morphing as evolution mandates. what we in our relative ignorance see and select (highly subjective) might backfire completely.

I think EVENTUALLY we will be able to design a child that will be completely healthy without inherited risks from diseases or illnesses. Imagine being able to ensure your child never develops schizophrenia or you can be sure the child will not be gay or gender confused. No increased risks for cancer or other diseases. It might be interesting to see what happens when everyone wants a 6'4" boy with blond hair and blue eyes, but eventually this science will take us far beyond that.

"nature has from the beginning had its own way of weeding out the weak and morphing as evolution mandates."

Nature obviously needs help weeding out the sheer number of schizophrenics, autistics, alcoholics, Down syndrome patients, manic-depressives, narcissists, obsessive-compulsives, pedophiles, sociopaths, and those with cerebral palsy, congenital heart failure, ALS, childhood cancers...

This could be it. Why would anyone want the "gift" of a feral autistic with Down syndrome and leukemia? To go ahead with that seems sadistic to me!

Instead of producing designer babies, kid-obsessed Americans should focus on teaching the ones they already have respect, politeness and manners. American kids are extremely rude, self-centered and entitled because their parents, instead of teaching, training and disciplining them put them on a pedestal and worship. American parents are a total failure and should seriously rethink their approach to children for the sake of the society as a whole, but also for the sake of the kids themselves.

People already get a list of characteristics of their donors. Whether they want more information is their business. Do we really want the government telling us what kind of babies we can have?

Hitler had a breeding program to increase the Aryan race. There are videos of the blue eyed babies that were born. They had to be of "pure German descent". I find this scary.

Mystery Princess is right Hitler was a vegetarian....lol. But, isn't allowing parents to design their OWN offspring just another part of "MY BODY, MY CHOICE", after all its not really a baby till its born. So they are really only designing a fetus.

I can not tell if you were being snarky but I totally agree with you. I think parents should be allowed to genetically manipulate the genes of the sperm/ovum combination. But there is such a thing as informed consent. I'm all for it as long as the clinics are really and truly educating parents about potential outcomes and risks.

The Nazi concept of the "Master Race" was insane, or, to be most charitable, was without empirical foundation.

Selecting traits for one's baby has nothing to do with a master race.
