This isn't about immigration reform...to call it that is nonsense. It is about amnesty for illegal aliens. Unless you open the borders giving the amnesty won't stop deportations.

And NO...given the circumstances we are in...I am not against a qualified and gradual amnesty.

I'm so glad that the congressmen had time to go protest for immigration reform... and then get arrested... no, no; it's cool. Not like I need a paycheck or to go back to work or anything... they can move on to other issues besides passing a budget or restarting the government... it's all good guys

Put them in prison. That's where they belong for treason anyway.

Good deal, most of those arrested should be behind bars anyway, Rangel for sure and should have been there years ago.
12:58 PM on 10/10/2013
These so called Congressmen should be fired! How can these government officials get away with breaking the law? Why do we allow a double standard to exist in government and so many other walks of life? FIRE THEM!

Boehner and his crew should be arrested for TREASON against our nation!!! Holding our country HOSTAGE to your political ideals is NOT how democracy works... you do not 'get your way' by stamping your feet and pointing a gun to the head of the American people... THAT my friend is "terrorism"!!!

If you want to change laws in this country we have a system of voting my majority rules... the MINORITY does not get to have their way because they "said so".

YOU have a lot to learn about what constitutes "breaking the law".

"Holding our country HOSTAGE to your political ideals is NOT how democracy works"

But technically that's not what the House has done. They've passed bills that would end the crisis, but Harry Reid refuses to put them before the senate for a vote Strictly speaking it's Reid who's holding the nation hostage to his political ideas.

And if the Senate passed the House Bill, President Obama would refuse to sign it, so then HE would be holding the nation hostage.

This is not treason. It's not terrorism. It's just hard-ball politics using the rules built into our Constitution. And since we elected these people (and will, in all probability, re-elect them) you can't say it's undemocratic.

Since the election last November, the United States has deported another 400,000 people - Now that is moving in the right direction. Only 10,600,000 more to go.

"You do realize that would bring the American economy screeching to a halt no?"

Why? Our unemployment rate is over 7%, so we have plenty of workers to fill the jobs illegals are doing now.

"But those jobs don't pay enough for Americans to take them," you might respond. But that ignores basic economics of supply and demand. If you have a job that needs done but nobody will do it, you have to offer more money until someone takes it. What this means is that the cost of having someone mow your lawn or pick your vegetables will go up.

And what's wrong with that? Don't you WANT mowers and pickers to earn a decent, living wage? Do you think you have a right to cheap lawn care and produce even if that means the workers have to live like refugees?

We need to adopt Mexico's law which makes it illegal for non-citizens to hold public protests.

We need to adopt New Zealand's law which says all GLBT people can get married, adopt children, and have jobs without fear of being fired for their sexual orientation. Oh and the US needs to pass a law that says no political party can hold the government hostage based on idiotic ideology.

I fully agree with your first sentence and agree with your second one. Two consenting adults should be able to marry, work, and live without fear of being fired and the senate should have tried to cooperate and pass one of the 4 funding bills the house sent.

That is the reason why so many people call this country "The land of the free"
and leave their Country's to come here.
12:29 PM on 10/10/2013
The U.S. needs to provide far more financial assistance to México to make that country a better place to live. Then, maybe then, the illegals will stop trying to invade the U.S. The U.S. should be providing far more money to México than to other countries simply because it's our closest trading partner (aside from Canada) and is the largest source of illegal immigrants. We need to take away the incentives to come the U.S.; the continued use of E-Verify to gain employment is a good step. Also, the phony "war on drugs" should be made a real one--too many people have made too much money from the drug trade and from the blood of innocent victims.

Both the Mall and Memorial are considered federal property which is CLOSED during a government shutdown, but political protests on government properties carry civil disobedience penalties, so the congressman knew they were breaking the law. The difference is visiting a government sponsored memorial and standing on pavement, which are two different things.

"political protests on government properties carry civil disobedience penalties"

No they don't. People assemble and protest on government property all the time. The famous March on Washington led by Martin Luther King was an example.

These people weren't arrested for protesting on federal property. They were arrested because they left the Mall and intentionally blocked traffic on a city street, then ignored police orders to desist. They could have been arrested for that without ever being on federal property.

"hold it, do illegal aliens have rights under the Constitution"

Yes. Constitutional rights apply to every in America, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

That's why they sent all those terrorism suspects to Guantanamo Bay. Cuba. If they brought them to the mainland, the prisoners would have Constitutional rights (like a speedy trial and freedom of speech).

Here's the view I get in this comment forum: First is that it is a lot of republican voices (of both normal, and of course the way-out-there kind)
Angry minds who tend to forget that at some point in their family history.. they came across boarders as aliens, and who the heck knows if they were actually 'legal' or illegal' at that time (or for how long).
Either case in the above, there were many 'citizens' who did not want them, who fought against their entry. Thank God that Our Constitution worked back then eh!
They clearly judge the majority of different people as automatically being 'illegals', yet could have absolutely no clue as to any person's status themselves.
Ranting and raving against this demonstration, cheering on the police for arresting, while Not considering that what they rant against of course is a Constitutional right, and that our Rights are not suspended just because their party is actively engaged in seditious revolt agaisnt our government, Nation, and Constitution.
Their ignorance is astounding, wanting to suspend Constitutional Rights against those who are simply not them, while screaming and bawling to use other rights inappropriately to be able to walk around threatening our society with firearms.... just amazing how some people think we all have to bow to them!
01:24 PM on 10/10/2013
They came across legally and applied for citizenship. That is the difference. What part of Illegal Immigrant don't you understand. These people broke the law and you want to reward them for it! What do you want to award to the murderers and rapist? Maybe buy them a new home or a shiny new car. When people break the law the need to be punished. I have no problem with people immigrating to the US, but please respect our laws when doing so. If you enter illegally, then what other laws are you willing to break when you get here???

Oh, do not go there.... there is just far too much evidence that during the peaks of 'immigrant' influx, showing that so many 'slipped by' the procedural elements in place.
I happen to agree that there must be things done about those here who are here illegally. But there are resonable methods, and then there are the Anti-American ways. They are here, so we need to use our American sense and humanity based way of life in finding those answers.
The addition of your 'murderers and rapist', and then striking at me as wanting to reward them? that just shows you being totally ingorant and closed minded! Is that truly who you are?
Finally, do you think the view of yourself you have given me would even allow me to consider you as a rational, considering person? Why would I want to work with someone that narrow and closed? We need answers, we need solutions, for this and a whole lot of very dangerously pressing issues on state and national levels... but what we need foremost is a sense of being a united people, willing to work for the best 'good' we can all have.. not just what some small group of either slant wants.

Illegal, thus no constitutional rights, human rights yes, constitutional rights, no... and most legal gun carriers do not walk around threating others with firearms, and as to bowing to others, hey, American here, I don't bow.

it's more than keeping wages down, let them in illegally, give them welfare, food stamps, education etc, then tell them that the big bad conservatives will take away these "rights" if they get into office, so make sure to always, and often VOTE DEMOCRAT. It's a power grab.

Because they contribute taxes into the system which lowers the deficit. More money into the kitty means more means to fund demand. Oh and of course policy and legislation encourage job growth as well to, but thanks to the Tea Party we haven't passed ONE fiscal bill related to improving job growth. Supply=Demand.

Not to insert a fact or two, but here it is. Most of the illegal aliens send most of their money to their home country. Sure, they rent a place to live,... and often seven or eight single men will live in a single apartment to save money. Not much spent in this country, but plenty taken out.
There are of course, families with children, who go to school here, who do not own a home, thus their education is free, without even the slightest tax... and of course, they do get WIC, many get Food Stamps, and again, lots of money goes back to their home country to support their family there.
12:03 PM on 10/10/2013
wow...good to see congressmen getting arrested worrying about immigration while the families of soldiers killed overseas arent getting their benefits...how about we worry about citizens that have died for our country instead of people that want to just slide in and get a free pass....i think its time to worry about "our own"for a change
