It's cheating. It's the same as MLB/NFL trying to explain away the steroids stuff "It's no cheating cause we didn't test for it" mentality they have. Same with cycling and Armstrong. Well, people will claim his doping prior to a certain year doesn't matter, the UCI didn't test for it, therefore he wasn't cheating. Somehow, natural ability doesn't count in sports anymore. It's who can exploit the most loopholes is who wins. And that is a sad commentary on today's society. Who would have ever thought that a lawyer would be more important to an athlete than physical training?

It's just unusual that a golfer continues to use a 20+ year old club.
Did PING just happen to have a warehouse full of 20 year old clubs?
Is he buying them on eBay?
Having duplicates made in a pro shop in Taiwan?
Had a personal collection?

There in lies the rub. It's NOT something readily available to EVERY player so it IS an edge and it IS unfair. NOT illegal but unfair and unsportsmanlike.

Exactly - McCarron reminds me of another complainer on the PGA Tour, Tom Pernice, Jr. They both exhibit that old man "get-off-my-lawn" attitude where all they are doing is looking for something to complain about rather than focusing on winning tournaments.

McCarron sounds like a complainer. He missed the cut, too bad. If he doesn't like the rule, he's welcome to try to change it. Until then he should apologize for his false accusation, keep his mouth shut and abide by the rules, just as Mickelson did - and the rule says that Mickelson is right and McCarron is wrong.

If its an approved club, how is it cheating?
05:15 PM on 01/30/2010
It has square grooves.

but it's approved... this guy- Mccaroon has sour grapes...
06:59 PM on 01/30/2010
That's the argument that the baseball players on steroids used... if it was not banned then how was it cheating? Are you ready to give those steroid users from the '90's the same latitude? Some how I suspect not...
10:52 AM on 01/31/2010
Your analogy is incorrect. Steroids were not approved, they were ignored. This club, with its square grooves was approved. It was not ignored. This was a conscious decision by the PGA. So, I ask again, If it was an approved club, how is it cheating?

Tiger Woods would never use these Ping wedges. Tiger is not a cheater!

I don't think it would really matter. Tiger could play with bamboo shafts and still beat the rest of the field.

It's always interesting how materials science and engineering for sports equipment figures into the game.

I'd like to see one of these players try an original golf club, ball and a craggy Scottish golf course from the past.

Yesterday Mickelson was yelling at the top of his lungs that "we need Tiger back"

So he needs Tiger back to take the heat off him using "illegal" clubs

That a boy Phil....you were watching the "sky banner" over the course too long

What a misleading title! At first I couldn't believe it because his wife is battling breast cancer. Who in the world would cheat on a cancer stricken wife.

I sense an entrance here for Newt Gingrich, stage right, followed by Antonio Villaraigosa and John Edwards. John McCain dumped his first wife after she was disfigured in a car accident while he had 25-year-old Cindy waiting in the wings.

I'll give you the first three. I go easy on McCain's first marriage because a lot of marriages broke up after soldiers returned from Vietnam - McCain's years as a POW probably didn't make things easier either.

The wedges Mikelson uses were submitted for approval - and the one he's using was approved. What's the beef? The complainer is out of line criticizing Big Phil.
