Almost sounds like the vet was saying either u pay us to fix him or its best that we keep him here and kill him. Hmmmm good job kid!

This story provokes several emotions for me: I have great compassion for Buck and hope that he recovers soon. Great respect for young Bronson and his deep abiding love for his pet.

I do not understand how veterinarians ( whom I thought must have a true calling to go into this line of medicine) could deny treatment because of lack of funds. A death verdict because someone cannot pay these steep prices? It seems to me that the most humane of practices should never come down to currency.

I had the misfortune of seeking emergency care in the last 3 weeks for two of my cats: one somehow broke her toes in an awkward jump, the other came down with a severe respiratory infection.

They were rushed to a specialty clinic as our vet was unavailable. After examination, an estimate was presented before they would begin treatment: $850 for the broken paw, $450 for x-rays, medications. Of course, I paid. Who wouldn't if you had plastic in your wallet and animals that you loved even if it would put you in financial jeopardy?

Thankfully there are SPCA's and other advocates who come to the aid of our furry friends.

I think it really depends on the vet themselves. I am lucky that i have a great vet. Me and my fiance found this stray tripod dog with a broken leg (so only 2 left legs left). The vet said he usually charges 900 - 1100 depends on the leg That's when i told him i can only afford about 700. Done deal. Now i got another great dog at home and a great vet i go to all the time with all my animals :D. So i guess what i am trying to say is support the good vets and avoid those are there just for the money.

Hi Twninja,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I loved hearing about your new baby ( what a blessing for all of you!). I did not mean to make such a broad sweeping conclusion on vets. I have had over my lifetime of owning assorted animals wonderful care for my pets. I do hear many stories about exorbitant costs and people agreeing to them at a moment of crisis out of their desire to everything possible for their furry kids.

Wishing you and your fiance the very best in the future.

Yes. I appreciated your comment.
Every few years I read the James Herriot stories. When I mention that some people have an idea that these stories are cutesy, but really they are not. They do speak of the respect of animals, and what they mean to us. I find it uplifting!
Now, it did seem that the family did offer to pay a small amount each week. The boy could also have helped around the vet building to help pay. Am I too old fashioned? I wonder. Anyway, I know James Herriot ( a real vet, by the way) would have worked something out.
Best regards to you.

Hi Philip,

I am familiar with James Herriot's stories and find them inspirational. I like your idea that Bronson could have offered to barter work in exchange for his pup's medical fees.

I am actually rather old fashioned myself when it comes to values, manners and such things. You sound like a lovely person and it is always nice to see you on the boards.

Hope you are not caught in the blizzard! Warm wishes to you always, Friend.

Agree about the pic.
That vet should go spend some time with his family.

I suspect it is a stock photograph, purchased from an agency just to illustrate the story. Cute pup, though.

That's the stock photo from the story about the dog with the three hind legs. At least get a stock photo from a dog with only 4 legs!
