Pelosi and the House may be our salvation, but the Senate continues to fail us. How many more examples do we need to prove that the Senate's rules are based on an outdated notion that this "gentleman's club" has a right to run based on the notion that any ONE of them is wiser than the majority of them. 290 bills passed by the House, virtually all of them with significant GOP support, languish in the antechambers of the "upper" house of our Congress?

Why? As created by the Constitution, the Senate was composed of party elders chosen by the state legislatures. No direct election. No vote by the electorate. In 1913 the 17th Amendment ended that, but it didn't end the "club" environment. The senators, with six-year terms, a host of special privileges, and extraordinary control over legislation that benefits their own states rarely lose bids for reelection.

For much of the time this has worked as the “honorable” senators found ways to cut deals with each other and trade favors. In the current ideological hothouse, under the never ending gaze of media scrutiny, driven by the need to have huge amounts of money in war chests, the ways of the Senator and its senators are no longer working. The problem really is a broken system.

Nancy Pelosi is my favorite person in Washington right now. She's a strong woman fighting for us.

Did you catch the election in Massachusetts? I think that election pretty much sums it up for the rest of us.

You mean the "spin of that election' that MA truckdriver cares about the average person" sums it up for the rest of us."

MA truck driver bought the truck only for his equestrian loving daughter and her equipment.

MA truck driver owns 3-4 properties.

MA truck driver voted for the MA healthcare system which is very similar to the senate plan.

MA truck driver says the teaparty did NOT influence his campaign while the teaparty claims the hypocritical MA truck driver as their own.

If she is fighting for us, why did she not fight for minimum wage for the citizens of American Somoa. You know, where the Star Kist tuna industry is located??? And the company in which her husband has many shares. Now if she is fighting for the American people, why isn't she fighting for them???

People are living longer. There are new wonder drugs coming on line every day. Health care costs are going to go up. Accept it. We can and should raise the retirement age. It should be tied to life span. New wonder drugs are coming. They cost money. Health costs will rise accordingly. Accept it. You will live longer. You will live better. You will have more effective drugs available to you. Genetically engineered drugs especially are coming. You will pay more and you will get more. We need to keep the politicians on the sidelines smiling and waving to the cameras. That is all they know how to do.

Puhleeze...you do realize that the "new wonder drugs that are coming" are completely paid for by our tax dollars? That the companies that develop take tax dollars for R&D and then make HUGE profits selling these same drugs to the serfs ?

Socialism for the corporaterich and capitalism for the poor (which used to be a middle class!)

Who cares where they come from? They are coming. You want to throw a monkey wrench into that process? Let the free market work. The free market is better than any other system. Let the Bill Gates of the world do their thing. It’s worth every penny.

nannystate,
You claim all the benefits workers have were the result of government, not the unions. I'm begging, please, please, please read some history. Your ignorance is so tiresome. It was the unions who forced government to push through those laws. And people died fighting for those protections, not government people, union workers.
And what on earth makes you think every single one of those protections will not be eliminated when corporations completely take over government?
10:50 PM on 02/27/2010
unions like the horse and buggy to use a metaphor, did have the major role in implimenting all the benefits you mentioned however the federal gov now mandates almost everything you mentioned and a lot more.

so you ignorant but ,they just like the horse and buggy are outdated, and nothing more than the reason a(and this would be an example of how they destry companiesthat they steal all these free benefits from)car has almost sixthousand dollars of union greed in the price.

so since you can't be civil you but, don't respond to me unless you can,i am just stating the obvious.

I take it back. You have admitted all the current protections and benefits workers currently enjoy were the result of union workers fighting and dying. I retract my ignorant comment.
Are you in favor of workers receiving a minimum wage without employer provided health care or retirement benefits?

I love and am so grateful for our Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

I know the gopmedia have totally gone after her with a smear campaign but it is totally unsubstantiated!

(They (FoxRushGOP) had no choice after the election and inauguration but to smear Pelosi and Reid since the country would not tolerate any lies about President Obama at that time.)

We should not put up with any lies now about Pelosi or Reid. Watch CSpan for the truth about what is happening in our House and Senate. Forget the CableSpin ... except Keith and Rachel and Ed, of course.

Yes, that is the never ending lie...promoted and accepted by the FoxRushGopHate machine that dupes it's viewers into believing that the plutocracy is on their side.

Fox is partially owned by the Saudis.

When fox talks about "Americans" the viewers think it is them. Sadly NO, it is the top 2 % that are the "real" Americans Fox promotes.

I have to laugh at the people who want to blame Pelosi for the troubles in the state of California. It just shows how ignorant people are who believe that a U.S Congressman makes laws for the state of California. Maybe they don't realize that it is the California state senate and house that makes the laws for the state of California.

The constitution in its natural state doesnt need a high dollar lawyer to figure out, it is, in its entirety pretty straight forward, It was written that way for a reason, Now on the other hand if youre trying to insert something into the constitution that isnt there, then you do need a high dollar lawer to interpret it. The second ammendment for example says that the right ot bear arms SHALL not be infringed, Expensive lawers have been trying for years to interpret this as Should not, or may not, But it still says Shall not.
I doubt the founding fathers, had taken constitutional law either.

So much for Obama's campaign claims of reaching across the aisle, "transparency", and "bipartisanship."

It was clear from the summit that Obama doesn't want to meet anyone halfway.

Pelosi, another hard-left ideologue, will do Obama's bidding. Democrats may or may not pass a health care bill. Either way, Democrats get destroyed in November.

The claim that the health care in the US is the best in the world is as bogus as the rest of the arguements by the Republicans against the present health reform bill.

The truth of the matter is, if the bill is passed it would be a body blow for the Republican politics. Once the Americans come to realise that all the GOP talking points against healthcare was false and mispresented and misrepresented, it will spell doom to their dream to recapture the White House and Congress.

They still have this potent weapon of misinforming the American people that, under the proposed bill, the present health insurance policy holders will be subsidizing the healthcare of the millions who doesn't have health insurance now! (In other words, the Whites will have to pay for the Blacks' health care.)

The task before the Democrats, therefore, is to debunk this false notion and move forward to where no other previous administration had gone to. And, Pelosi has a major role to play and time and again she has proven that she can take the Republicans to task and beat them in their own game.
09:22 PM on 02/27/2010
in 2012 the new president will win with a promise to overturn this union bill.why does obama talk to andy stern before debating healthcare?is it because he has no clue or is this a union emergency not national as he makes beleive?a real emergency is unemployment, nafta should be repealed and unions should be reformed that would be a real fix for both problems.

and congress will be turned over to republican control with the 42 thr100th vote against this laughable union kickback, yes it will be dismantled if passed, the people will speak just like obama said.only this time he'll listen.moving day will open his ears.

true reform will never come as a handout to the unions, tax free cadilac plans for them but not you.half a trillion in medicare cuts that some how wont affect care for the elderly. and this pres. expects you to beleive that medicare and medicaid are already bankrupt, yet able to absorb this cut.

"cadillac health plans" were negotiated in good faith by workers who traded off wage increases for good health care.

Should those workers now lose that health care? does that seem fair to you?

Well, I do realize who I am talking to..so...
09:50 PM on 02/27/2010
why should the rest of us pay for unions lying to their workers? we pay dearly for their negotiated entitlments when we buy union made goods, you don't beleive the companies that are being strongarmed by these unions are making so much off of their goods that they don't add these cost's and pass it on.to the rest of us ?

You do realize that the VAST MAJORITY of "cadillac" health plans ARE NOT plans serving union members, right? That depending on coverage and co-pay, etc., many plans serving ordinary folks - non-union employees, the self-employed - will be considered "cadillac"plans. Some variants of Kaiser health fit this description, for example. Your problem, like so many cons fixated on "unions" as some sort of boogey man - that your hatred blinds you to rational perception or argument...
10:19 PM on 02/27/2010

hibeam,
Still waiting for your financial analysis of how your health insurance reform bill is superior to either of the bills passed by Congress. Can you hurry that along a little?
10:21 PM on 02/27/2010
Dude, I’m still waiting to see how congress is going to sweep Medicare and Medicaid under the rug. It’s going to make a big lump and it’s going to stink to high heaven but Oabma will be ignoring that and pointing to super duper shiny new exciting health care and hoping no one notices the stench of those two bankrupt programs.
10:32 PM on 02/27/2010
It’s easy if you use Obama math. Turns out the more people you insure the more money you save. Not sure why we are excluding the illegal immigrants if this is true. I’m guessing it’s because we don’t have enough room in all our banks for all the money we would save.

You obviously know nothing of how crooked Congress used to be. You see, it's simple. When you compare one thing (current ethics) against another thing (past ethics) you have to know both to actually do the comparison.
Or you could just look up the word "compare" in the dictionary.
